Book excerpt: Following the pattern of the Internet growth in popularity, started in the early 1990s, the current unprecedented expansion of wireless technology promises to have an even greater effect on how people communicate and interact, with considerable socio-economic impact all over the world. The driving force behind this growth is the remarkable progress in component miniaturization, integration, and also devel- ments in waveforms, coding, and communication protocols. Besides established infrastructurebased wireless networks (cellular, WLAN, sat- lite) ad-hoc wireless networks emerge as a new platform for distributed applications and for personal communication in scenarios where deploying infrastructure is not feasible. In ad-hoc wireless networks, each node is capable of forwarding packets on behalf of other nodes, so that multi-hop paths provide end-to-end connectivity. The increased flexibility and mobility of ad-hoc wireless networks are favored for appli- tions in law enforcement, homeland defense and military. In a world where wireless networks become increasingly interoperable with each other and with the high-speed wired Internet, personal communication systems will transform into universal terminals with instant access to variate content and able of handle demanding tasks, such as multimedia and real-time video. With users roaming between networks, and with wide variation in wireless link quality even in a single domain, the communications terminal must continue to provide a level of Quality of Service that is acceptable to the user and conforms to a contracted Service Level Agreement.

Book excerpt: Over recent years, a considerable amount of effort has been devoted, both in industry and academia, towards the performance modelling, evaluation and prediction of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. This book describes recent advances in ATM networks reflecting the state-of-the-art technology and research achievements worldwide. In addition, it provides a fundamental source of reference in the ATM field. Research topics discussed in detail include: Traffic Modelling and Characterisation; Routing; Switch and Multiplexer Models; Call Admission Control (CAC); Congestion Control; Resource Allocation; Quality of Service (QoS); Tools and Techniques. This volume contains recently extended refereed papers of the 5th International Workshop on Performance Modelling and Evaluation of ATM Networks, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Ilkley, UK in July 1997. Performance Analysis of ATM Networks continues the tradition established by the first three IFIP volumes on the subject, and it is ideal for personnel in computer/communication industries as well as academic and research staff in computer science and electrical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research project, several issues related to providing Quality of Service (QoS) for command and control applications running on ATM networks were investigated. The QoS requirements are specified in terms of maximum delay, jitter, and cell loss probability. In this context, new AIM switch designs, algorithms for traffic control, routing, and multicasting were developed. Novel neural network based techniques for traffic characterization and admission control at the node and network levels were developed. A new multicast switch architecture was designed for use in high performance ATM networks and its performance as evaluated via simulation. New algorithms for efficiently routing ATM cells in input buffered switches were developed and their performance was evaluated.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing performance guarantees is one of the most important issues for future telecommunication networks. This book describes theoretical developments in performance guarantees for telecommunication networks from the last decade. Written for the benefit of graduate students and scientists interested in telecommunications-network performance this book consists of two parts. The first introduces the recently-developed filtering theory for providing deterministic (hard) guarantees, such as bounded delay and queue length. The filtering theory is developed under the min-plus algebra, where one replaces the usual addition with the min operator and the usual multiplication with the addition operator. As in the classical linear system theory, the filtering theory treats an arrival process (or a departure process ) as a signal and a network element as a system. Network elements, including traffic regulators and servers, can be modelled as linear filters under the min-plus algebra, and they can be joined by concatenation, "filter bank summation", and feedback to form a composite network element. The problem of providing deterministic guarantees is equivalent to finding the impulse response of composite network elements. This section contains material on: - (s, r)-calculus - Filtering theory for deterministic traffic regulation, service guarantees and networks with variable-length packets - Traffic specification - Networks with multiple inputs and outputs - Constrained traffic regulation The second part of the book addresses stochastic (soft) guarantees, focusing mainly on tail distributions of queue lengths and packet loss probabilities and contains material on: - (s(q), r(q))-calculus and q-envelope rates - The large deviation principle - The theory of effective bandwidth The mathematical theory for stochastic guarantees is the theory of effective bandwidth. Based on the large deviation principle, the theory of effective bandwidth provides approximations for the bandwidths required to meet stochastic guarantees for both short-range dependent inputs and long-range dependent inputs.
