Book excerpt: This paper examines the determinants of female labor force participation in India, against the backdrop of India having one of the lowest participation rates for women among peer countries. Using extensive Indian household survey data, we model the labor force participation choices of women, conditional on demographic characteristics and education, as well as looking at the influence of state-level labor market flexibility and other state policies. Our main finding is that a number of policy initiatives can help boost female economic participation in the states of India, including increased labor market flexibility, investment in infrastructure, and enhanced social spending.

Book excerpt: The problems of women workers in general -- and in the unorganised sector in particular -- deserve special attention and focus in view of their marginalised position within the class of workers. The position of women workers in rural India is considerably lower than that of women in general. The bottom layer is constituted by women belonging to the lowest social status groups. A number of national and international studies have documented the sex-typing of jobs and occupations by women. Occupational segregation represents a form of discrimination. Discrimination on the lines of gender is not always overt. It appears in very subtle forms such as in the nature of work performed, skills required to perform the work and the valuation of these skills and the technology used by men and women. One problem more specific to women is that they are subject to various forms of harassment at the workplace. Verbal and physical violence against women has been an age-old method of subjugating them. Female and child domestic workers constitute a large portion of migrant worker population. Working in the unregulated domain of a private home, mostly without the protection of national labour legislations, allows for female domestic workers to be maltreated by their employers with impunity. This volume contains 16 well-researched papers by scholars in the field of women studies. These scholarly papers explain and examine the various aspects of working conditions of women workers in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relatively high wages and the opportunity to be part of an upscale, globalized work environment draw many in India to the call center industry. At the same time, night shift employment presents women, in particular, with new challenges alongside the opportunities. This book explores how beliefs about what constitutes "women's work" are evolving in response to globalization. Working the Night Shift is the first in-depth study of the transnational call center industry that is written from the point of view of women workers. It uncovers how call center employment affects their lives, mainly as it relates to the anxiety that Indian families and Indian society have towards women going out at night, earning a good salary, and being exposed to western culture. This timely account illustrates the ironic and, at times, unsettling experiences of women who enter the spaces and places made accessible through call center work. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful and timely book explores the inner world of Indian women. it is based on workshops and dialogues which the authors conducted with a very large number of women from all over India and from diverse backgrounds - the poor and the well-to-do, villagers and urbanites, women who work in offices and those who run homes, daughters, wives, mothers and grandmothers. Containing as it does the distilled essence of the innermost feelings of Indian women, this book has an immediacy and a relevance not just for all Indians but for men and women all over the world. The authors trace the journey of women to maturity and the many thresholds they cross on the way. They deal with women's processes of being and becoming and the heritage of folklore, myths and role models which influence and affect these processes. The authors outline five major role models for women which are dominant in Indian society. Tracing the historical loci of these models, the authors argue that even though these models have become out dated given the changing mores and life-styles, Indian women are still expected to conform to them. This clash between role expectations and current realities has created considerable tension for today's woman and is the major source of her pathos. However, while women are at the receiving end of many negative attitudes and constricting stereotypes in Indian society, the authors believe that, in the final analysis, they are often victims of their own restricted vision. They believe that Indian women (as also men) still have to discover a third identity which is neither male nor female but human. This identity encompasses the other two identities and, is a liberating and life-giving force which can revitalise not just women but society at large. This exciting and absorbing book will be of interest to scholars from a wide range of disciplines while being essential reading for all men and women.
