Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin is the first in a series of summaries of research conducted in reading from 1955 to 1960. The publication includes both published and unpublished research during the 5-year period. The published research has been compiled largely from studies reported in educational periodicals. The unpublished research was made available through a survey conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Office of Education, with the cooperation of colleges, universities, and public school systems, which furnished information on studies undertaken in the various educational institutions. Chapter I, Summary of Research in the Teaching of Primary Reading, provides an overview of the studies reported in this bulletin: (1) Reading Readiness; (2) Age of Beginning Reading; (3) Methods of Teaching Reading; (4) Grouping for Reading Instruction; (5) Reading Achievement; (6) Reading Programs; (7) Reading Interests; (8) Reading Materials; (9) Comprehension; (10) Vocabulary; (11) Word Recognition; (12) Reading and Language Arts; (13) Reading and Intelligence; (14) Auditory Factors; (15) Reading and Physical Growth; (16) Reversals; (17) Kindergarten Attendance; (18) Language; and (19) Causes of Reading Difficulties. Book excerpt: A grim prognosis, brain cancer, leaves the speaker in Kirkpatrick's Odessa fighting for her life. The tumor presses against her amygdalae, the "emotional core of the self," and central to the process of memory. In poems endowed with this emotional charge but void of sentimentality, Kirkpatrick sets out to recreate what was lost by fashioning a dreamlike reality. Odessa, "roof of the underworld," a refuge at once real and imagined, resembles simultaneously the Midwestern prairie and a mythical god-inhabited city. In image-packed lines bearing shades of Classical heroism, Kirkpatrick delivers a personal narrative of stunning dimension.

Book Synopsis The Reading Crisis by : Jeanne Sternlicht CHALL
Download or read book The Reading Crisis written by Jeanne Sternlicht CHALL and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How severe is the literacy gap in our schools? Why does the nine-year-old child from a culturally disadvantaged background so often fall victim to the fourth-grade slump? Although the cognitive abilities of these "children at risk" may be consistent with the norm, their literacy development lags far behind that of other children. In The Reading Crisis, the renowned reading specialist Jeanne Chall and her colleagues examine the causes of this disparity and suggest some remedies. Using Chall's widely applied model of reading development, the authors examine the strengths and weaknesses in the reading, writing, and language development of children from low-income families in an attempt to identify the onset of their difficulties. They show how, in the transition from learning the medium to understanding the message, the demands on children's reading skills become significantly more complex. The crucial point is fourth grade, when students confront texts containing unfamiliar words and ideas that are beyond the range of their own experience. According to Chall's findings, the lack of specific literacy skills-not cognitive factors-explains the deceleration in the reading and writing development of low-income children. The authors outline an active role for the schools in remedying weaknesses in literacy development, and give suggestions for the home and the community. Their recommendations address both practical issues in instruction and the teacher-student dynamic that fosters literacy development. Table of Contents: Preface Acknowledgments 1.
