Book Synopsis Reading for the Body by : Jay Watson
Download or read book Reading for the Body written by Jay Watson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVJay Watson argues that southern literary studies has been overidealized and dominated by intellectual history for too long. In Reading for the Body, he calls for the field to be rematerialized and grounded in an awareness of the human body as the site where ideas, including ideas about the U.S. South itself, ultimately happen. Employing theoretical approaches to the body developed by thinkers such as Karl Marx, Colette Guillaumin, Elaine Scarry, and Friedrich Kittler, Watson also draws on histories of bodily representation to mine a century of southern fiction for its insights into problems that have preoccupied the region and nation alike: slavery, Jim Crow, and white supremacy; the marginalization of women; the impact of modernization; the issue of cultural authority and leadership; and the legacy of the Vietnam War. He focuses on the specific bodily attributes of hand, voice, and blood and the deeply embodied experiences of pain, illness, pregnancy, and war to offer new readings of a distinguished group of literary artists who turned their attention to the South: Mark Twain, Jean Toomer, Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Richard Wright, Katherine Anne Porter, Bobbie Ann Mason, and Walker Percy. In producing an intensely embodied U.S. literature these writers, Watson argues, were by turns extending and interrogating a centuries-old tradition in U.S. print culture, in which the recalcitrant materiality of the body serves as a trope for the regional alterity of the South. Reading for the Body makes a powerful case for the body as an important methodological resource for a new southern studies./div

Book excerpt: The overarching argument of "Reading the Social Body "is that the body is cultural rather than " natural." Some of the essays treat the social construction of bodies that have actually existed in human history; others discuss the representation of bodies in artistic contexts; all recognize that everything visible to the human body--from posture and costume to the width of an eyebrow or a smile--is determined by and shaped in response to a particular culture.

With a new Afterword. “You will marvel at the brilliance and vast weirdness of your design." —The Washington Post Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body—how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Brysonesque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, “We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted.” The Body will cure that indifference with generous doses of wondrous, compulsively readable facts and information. As addictive as it is comprehensive, this is Bryson at his very best.

Download or read book My Body Belongs to Me from My Head to My Toes written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now every parent, grandparent, or teacher can explain to a child the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching in a way that young boys and girls can understand. As a child, there are constantly people trying to pick you up, hug you, or tickle you. Sometimes, though, children fall victims to people who try to touch them inappropriately. But how do you tell someone, most likely an adult, that you don’t want to be touched? Or, if it has already happened, how do you tell an adult you trust about what happened? You’re only a child, and they’re the adults. Why would they believe you? My Body Belongs to Me from My Head to My Toes is an educational tool to help instill confidence in children when it comes to their bodies. The narrative of the story is led by a girl named Clara, who encourages kids to say “no” if they are uncomfortable with physical contact. The narrator gives readers tips about what they can say or do to avoid unwanted physical contact, or how to tell the right people in the event it has already occurred. My Body Belongs to Me from My Head to My Toes is an invaluable resource that gives children a voice in uncomfortable situations.

Book excerpt: “People are always asking me, how can I be happy? Or, how can I find the thing I really want to do in life? I tell them: you are standing on your answer. The secrets of your life are written on your body” —Ohashi Ohashi helps you learn these secrets by showing you how to “read your body” to determine both your physical and spiritual condition as revealed in the physical self. Because, as Ohashi notes, “the body is the physical manifestation of the soul,” your posture, your features, and the texture of your skin can tell you who you are. This is not just a book about health and shiatsu; it is a guide to living well. The goal is to find unity of body, mind, and spirit, emphasizing that everyone has strengths and weaknesses and that accommodating one’s weaknesses is as important as utilizing one’s strengths. Filled with diagrams, drawings, and sample diagnoses, this is not only a practical guidebook—by “reading the body” one can tell what shiatsu techniques apply to the various energy meridians of the body—but also a fascinating meditation on how to live.
Book Synopsis Reading the Brontë Body by : Beth Torgerson
Download or read book Reading the Brontë Body written by Beth Torgerson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne, Emily, and Charlotte Brontë's literary representations of illness and disease reflect the major role illness played in the lives of the Victorians and its frequent reoccurrence within the Brontës' personal lives. An in-depth analysis of the history of nineteenth-century medicine provides the necessary cultural context to understand these representations, giving modern readers a sense of how health, illness, and the body were understood in Victorian England. Together, medical anthropology and the history of medicine offer a useful lens with which to understand Victorian texts. Reading the Brontë Body is the first scholarly attempt to provide both the theoretical framework and historical background to make such a literary analysis of the Brontë novels possible, while exploring how these representations of disease and illness work within a larger cultural framework.
