Book excerpt: Iona and Audrey emit smoke signals when they need help, but sometimes it takes more than water to put them out. Iona thought she would sip mimosas while relaxing on a beach in retirement, but instead she suffers from loneliness as vacation brochures collect dust. Even worse, she feels forgotten by her daughter. Iona’s daughter, Audrey, serially dates emotionally scarred men and buries herself in work to avoid the pain of rejection. Audrey feels like an abject failure when it comes to relationships. The relationship dynamic between the two shifts when a disastrous fire threatens Iona’s home. Audrey’s longing for motherhood is funneled into caring for Iona. Iona courageously joins the Senior Center where she meets Maxine who sells fresh eggs at farmer’s markets by day and hosts parties at night. As the relationship between Audrey and Iona disintegrates like burning wood, they discover that living with each other in adulthood presents numerous challenges and adaptations. One thing's for sure, they'll need to get better at putting out fires.

Book excerpt: “One of the best.” – Julia Quinn The beloved queen of Regency romance is back with a brand-new story perfect for fans of Bridgerton. The handsome and charismatic Earl of Stratton, Caleb Ware, has been exposed to the ton for his clandestine affairs—by his own son. As a child, Devlin Ware thought his family stood for all that was right and good in the world. They were kind, gracious, and shared the beauty of Ravenswood, their grand country estate, by hosting lavish parties for the entire countryside. But at twenty-two, he discovered his whole world was an elaborate illusion, and when Devlin publicly called his family to account for it, he was exiled as a traitor. So be it. He enlisted in the fight against Napoleon and didn’t look back for six years. But now his father is dead, the Ware family is broken, and as the heir he is being called home. It’s only when Gwyneth Rhys—the woman he loved and then lost after his family banished him—holds out her hand to help him that he is able make the difficult journey and try to piece together his fractured family. It is Gwyneth’s loyalty, patience, and love that he needs. But is Devlin’s war-hardened heart even capable of offering her love in return?

Book excerpt: Planning is becoming one of the key battlegrounds for Indigenous people to negotiate meaningful articulation of their sovereign territorial and political rights, reigniting the essential tension that lies at the heart of Indigenous-settler relations. But what actually happens in the planning contact zone - when Indigenous demands for recognition of coexisting political authority over territory intersect with environmental and urban land-use planning systems in settler-colonial states? This book answers that question through a critical examination of planning contact zones in two settler-colonial states: Victoria, Australia and British Columbia, Canada. Comparing the experiences of four Indigenous communities who are challenging and renegotiating land-use planning in these places, the book breaks new ground in our understanding of contemporary Indigenous land justice politics. It is the first study to grapple with what it means for planning to engage with Indigenous peoples in major cities, and the first of its kind to compare the underlying conditions that produce very different outcomes in urban and non-urban planning contexts. In doing so, the book exposes the costs and limits of the liberal mode of recognition as it comes to be articulated through planning, challenging the received wisdom that participation and consultation can solve conflicts of sovereignty. This book lays the theoretical, methodological and practical groundwork for imagining what planning for coexistence might look like: a relational, decolonizing planning praxis where self-determining Indigenous peoples invite settler-colonial states to their planning table on their terms.

Sink into this alluring tale of a reclusive pubkeep and the dazzling, unattainable noble whose life is wrapped in a deadly mystery he can’t resist solving. Anastazja's cruel rejection leaves Tyreste shattered and clinging to desperate solitude. Oblivious to the malevolence that waits for her every night when she returns home, he finds it easier to believe she never loved him than to explore his fear that she’s in serious trouble. Behind the veil of Ana's seemingly charmed life, an ancient evil stalks her family's revered halls. Her cunning stepmother wields terrible threats against Ana’s loved ones to coerce her into assisting in horrifying experiments against the Ravenwood priests and priestesses, longtime allies of Ana’s family. Tyr's love for Ana remains steadfast despite her abrupt departure from his life. To distract himself from his heartbreak, he immerses himself in work, translating a series of mysterious and chilling letters, only to find himself entangled in a harrowing mystery spanning generations. A mystery that revolves around Ana's family. The very same one consuming—and destroying—Ana, piece by piece. For years, she has fought this war alone, exhausting all her resources against the wicked witch who holds her family hostage. She’s out of tactics and, more importantly, time. As the end draws near, she realizes the key to ending the witch’s reign of terror might lie with the tavern boy who stole her heart. Her solitary light in endless years of darkness. Only together can Anastazja and Tyreste end the terror that has gripped the north, and the Ravenwoods, for centuries. ___ The Belle and the Blackbird is a forbidden love fantasy romance Snow White & Rose Red retelling set in the Kingdom of the White Sea Universe, featuring characters first introduced in The Altruist and the Assassin. Book excerpt: The perilous and provocative world of Kingdom of the White Sea, by USA Today bestselling fantasy author Sarah M. Cradit, comes to a startling conclusion in The Hidden Kingdom. A kingless crown will fall. A crownless kingdom will rise. It all began with a desperate demand from a broken crown. Four brides. Four Reaches. Unquestionable and absolute fealty from the mothers and fathers who were given no choice but to comply. A startling sequence of events followed, with stunning repercussions that reached across the entire realm. Now, the king is dead. The would-be brides have forged their own destinies—some for the better, others for worse. Not all who started this dance will finish it. Those left will wear the lingering scars with a mix of pride and remorse. From his stolen throne, Oldwin rules with a hand that grows shakier by the hour, as his once unparalleled magic dwindles. His grasp on power is reliant upon his truths remaining hidden by the shadows, just beyond the reach of the fraught kingdom But Oldwin is not the only powerful sorcerer in the kingdom. There are others who would see the terrible circle of their traitorous past come to a decisive end. Their moonlight maneuvering saved the life of Dain Rhiagain, and from his line the last sprig of hope remains: a chance to save the kingdom... to save all the worlds. Dain’s three children, each raised in obliviousness, must now prepare to confront the staggering truth of why they were born, and what they must now do, if the kingdom is to survive the final days ahead. But theirs is not the only sacrifice required. The dying words of an old man will stir one man and his Reach toward a new destiny, one that will decide the fate of all the worlds...
