Book excerpt: Well-known, politically charged people around the country are turning up dead. They all have two things in common: they are each despised by the American Right, and they all have the same gruesome message pinned to their dead bodies. As the mystery grows, a tragic scene unfolds in a Michigan forest elevating awareness of the situation to the highest levels of government. When a terror arises, when it is so menacing and imminent that stopping it supersedes the law itself, there is a clandestine team with the requisite skills which must be engaged. Only the president can call on them. They are the Three Ravens. When these three men are assembled to do a job, it means something awful is happening, the worst of the worst. It means the unthinkable is at your doorstep.

The forgotten scroll spoke of unbelievable things: A man from across the sea, a barren mother, a living statue, and the return of the Small Gods. Unbelievable, and yet the pieces for the second coming of the Small Gods are drawn together by fate’s hand, destined to bring evil back to the world. Those who would stop them are spread far and wide without hope of coming together, leaving them no chance of fulfilling their destines. Captured, threatened, fleeing…the sister, the firstborn, the Mother can all only pray to escape with their lives. If they die, what hope is there for a kingdom?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fresno Ranch, an abandoned horse and mule operation located in a remote stretch of the Rio Grande River bordering Mexico, gives evidence of a human presence spanning centuries. The ranch saw a period of entrepreneurial mule breeding and ranching, and ownership by Texas artist and publishing heiress Jeanne Norsworthy, who built an off-the-grid, hand-constructed adobe studio on the premises. Photographer and freelance writer E. Dan Klepper spent seven years, off and on, living and working at Fresno Ranch. By 2008, when the 7,000-acre property was acquired by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to become part of Big Bend Ranch State Park, the adobe studio dwelling and its associated structures had been sitting vacant for almost ten years—many rugged miles from the nearest electrical power line or municipal water system. Between 2006 and 2013, Klepper assisted his friend Rodrigo Trevizo, park ranger and caretaker for the property, with the various chores required to keep the ranch in operating condition. The two excavated and repaired the primary water network, cared for the livestock, cleared brush, and maintained a small, solar-powered electrical system. Days of 110-degree heat, boiling water for washing and cooking, and keeping a wary eye out for rattlesnakes alternated with evenings spent in the flicker of kerosene lanterns, listening to the rasping of the ravens as they scoured the canyon in the gathering dark. In vivid images and well-considered prose, Klepper reflects on his experiences at Fresno Ranch, “witnessing the unfolding of a natural world unfettered by the overpowering human footprint that has dominated so many of our remaining wild places.” For aficionados of fine art photography, cultural and natural history enthusiasts, and fans of the Big Bend region and its austere beauty, Why the Raven Calls the Canyon offers a provocative visual journal of off-the-grid living that celebrates the unique landscape of the Big Bend.

Book excerpt: When Satan’s little helper gets real, everyone feels the heat! “Raven is a perfect blend of romance, comedy, action-horror and fantasy. Full of moments to make you giggle, and then reach for the tissue-box!” This is the Raven Combo: Books 1 – 3 - ‘No Angel!’ ‘Unstoppable’ and ‘Black Rose’. Meet Raven… She’s feisty, spirited, and has a tendency to get lost in the game. She was born at the age of twenty-seven. She wasn’t allowed to think her own thoughts, or make a single move unless someone else wanted her to. That’s life, for a character in a book. The author of the book, Mika Mills, knew all good writers try to bring their characters to life… but there are limits! When it all began one fateful, life-changing night, those limits were not only exceeded, but banished to the other side of the universe forever! One moment it was a story about she-devils and Satan, then a storm with strange red lightning hit the village... and suddenly the novel became a biography. Neither Mika or Raven realised it was just the beginning of their spectacular new lives, or that their destinies were being shaped by an ancient scribe, and an even older mystical tablet… their futures woven together through the pages of time itself. They are just about to find out… “If you’ve had your fill of the same-old, try a little Raven!” Check out Raven and Mika’s story on the rtgreen website. Enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Slobodchikoff's ground-breaking research" (Jonathan Balcombe) shows us that animals have much to teach us about language Groundbreaking research has been done teaching animals human language, but what about the other way around? Studies have shown that lizards, squid, monkeys, and birds are talking to each other, communicating information about food, predators, squabbles, and petty jealousies. These animal languages are unique and highly adaptive. By exploring them, we come to appreciate the basis of our own languages; understanding or even "speaking" them allows us to get closer to the other species who inhabit this planet with us. The implications of animals having language are enormous. It has been one of the last bastions separating "us" from "them." Slobodchikoff's studies of the communication system of prairie dogs over twenty-five years have attracted a considerable amount of attention from the media, including a one-hour documentary on his work produced by BBC and Animal Planet. In Chasing Doctor Dolittle, he posits that the difference is one of degree, not the vast intellectual chasm that philosophers have talked about for millennia. Filled with meticulous research, vivid examples and daring conclusions, this book will challenge the reader's assumptions and open up new possibilities of understanding our fellow creatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Crows and people share similar traits and social strategies. To a surprising extent, to know the crow is to know ourselves.”—from the Preface From the cave walls at Lascaux to the last painting by Van Gogh, from the works of Shakespeare to those of Mark Twain, there is clear evidence that crows and ravens influence human culture. Yet this influence is not unidirectional, say the authors of this fascinating book: people profoundly influence crow culture, ecology, and evolution as well. John Marzluff and Tony Angell examine the often surprising ways that crows and humans interact. The authors contend that those interactions reflect a process of “cultural coevolution.” They offer a challenging new view of the human-crow dynamic—a view that may change our thinking not only about crows but also about ourselves. Featuring more than 100 original drawings, the book takes a close look at the influences people have had on the lives of crows throughout history and at the significant ways crows have altered human lives. In the Company of Crows and Ravens illuminates the entwined histories of crows and people and concludes with an intriguing discussion of the crow-human relationship and how our attitudes toward crows may affect our cultural trajectory.
