Appearing in print after a hiatus of more than half a century, The Lonely Tiger is a must read.
Book Synopsis South Asian Folklore in Transition by : Frank J. Korom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Subcontinent has been at the centre of folklore inquiry since the 19th century, yet, while much attention was paid to India by early scholars, folkloristic interest in the region waned over time until it virtually disappeared from the research agendas of scholars working in the discipline of folklore and folklife. This fortunately changed in the 1980s when a newly energized group of younger scholars, who were interested in a variety of new approaches that went beyond the textual interface, returned to folklore as an untapped resource in South Asian Studies. This comprehensive volume further reinvigorates the field by providing fresh studies and new models both for studying the “lore” and the “life” of everyday people in the region, as well as their engagement with the world at large. By bringing Muslims, material culture, diasporic horizons, global interventions and politics to bear on South Asian folklore studies, the authors hope to stimulate more dialogue across theoretical and geographical borders to infuse the study of the Indian Subcontinent’s cultural traditions with a new sense of relevance that will be of interest not only to areal specialists but also to folklorists and anthropologists in general. This book was originally published as a special issue of South Asian History and Culture.

This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of the past, as a historical agenda, figured prominently in the attempt of intellectuals to modernize society. They realized the importance of being sensitive to their past, which had been misrepresented by colonial rule. The investigation of the past to perceive the present and to conceive a future became integral to their intellectual endeavour. To use K.N. Panikkhar's words, "the intellectual quest in colonial India, engaged in an enquiry into the meaning of the past and thus in an assessment of its relevance to contemporary society, was an outcome of this awareness''. The construction of the past, was initially viewed as pre-requisite to reform. It subsequently turned out to be part of an ant-colonial agenda to retrieve a lost identity. This agenda become very vocal as the national movement reached its mass phase.

This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Material Acts in Everyday Hindu Worlds, Joyce Burkhalter Flueckiger analyzes the agency of materiality—the ability of materials to have an effect on both humans and deities—beyond human intentions. Using materials from three regions where Flueckiger conducted extensive fieldwork, she begins with Indian understandings of the agency of ornaments that have the desired effects of protecting women and making them more auspicious. Subsequent chapters bring in examples of materiality that are agentive beyond human intentions, from a south Indian goddess tradition where female guising transforms the aggressive masculinity of men who wear saris, braids, and breasts to the presence of cement images of Ravana in Chhattisgarh, which perform alternative theologies and ideologies to those of dominant textual traditions of the Ramayana epic. Deeply ethnographic and accessibly written, Material Acts in Everyday Hindu Worlds expands our understanding of material agency as well as the parameters of religion more broadly. Book excerpt: This definitive guide to independent India takes us through the events and personalities that have shaped India in the seventy years since 1947. Starting with Independence Day, it covers the decades in which the subcontinent saw the rise of democracy, its metamorphosis from an economy driven by selfsufficiency to one propelled by the economic reforms of the 1990s, and the concurrent liberalization, privatization and globalization that boosted India's growth rate. It also marks the transition from the era of single-party dominance to that of coalition politics and to identity-based politics. Arranged chronologically, India since 1947 covers a wide range of topics, from the Green Revolution, the Five-Year Plans, the infamous Emergency and the emergence of the Bharatiya Janata Party as a major political force to the beginning of television in India and the launch of its space and nuclear programmes. A separate listing of the events leading up to Independence, interesting factoids on various aspects of modern India and a detailed index further enhance the appeal of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treading the Beaten Path is a rereading of history through the review and critical analysis of fifty books. It is an in-depth analysis of major events that shaped the history of contemporary India. Amongst authors are B R Ambedkar, Rajdeep Sardesai Jai Ram Ramesh, Ramachandra Guha, Kuldip Nayyar, Zoya Hassan and a host of others. Major epochs in history like the Mughal period, Partition of India, the Emergency, Operation Blue Star etc. are included. The biographies of Sheik Abdulla, Feroze Gandhi and critical studies on S C Bose, Nehru and Gandhi form a part. Epochs of history include the partition of Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. A look at the two-part defense of Hinduism by Shashi Tharoor is a highlight. An evaluation of the Communist, Hindutva and Mandal movements is undertaken. On a lighter vein the biographies of Mohamed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Sahir Ludhianvi are explored. The reviews have a personal touch as the author has thought out of the box to add his opinion to many a contentious issue at hand. In that sense it is not a review but a critical narrative with the book acting only as a template with the discussion many a time spilling beyond the confines of it.

Because in this universe there is nothing sweeter than death. DIE THAT DEATH and die such a death GORAKH DIED AND SAW, die that way in which Gorakh attained enlightenment. In the same way you die and see. One death we are already familiar with: in which the body dies, but our ego and mind go on living. This same ego finds a new womb. Book excerpt: The hidden meanings of the Beatles’ most esoteric lyrics and sounds are revealed by a rare insider who spent two decades with the man who made “meditation,” “mantra,” and “yoga” household words: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. “I absolutely love this book. Between the stories and the pictures, many I’ve not seen before, this is truly a spiritual journey.” —Chris O’Dell, author of Miss O’Dell, My Hard Days and Long Nights with The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan, and the Women They Loved The spiritual journey of the Beatles is the story of an entire generation of visionaries in the sixties who transformed the world. The Beatles turned Western culture upside down and brought Indian philosophy to the West more effectively than any guru. The Inner Light illumines hidden meanings of the Beatles’ India-influenced lyrics and sounds, decoded by Susan Shumsky—a rare insider who spent two decades in the ashrams and six years on the personal staff of the Beatles’ mentor, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. “With clarity, depth, and impeccable research, an exceptionally comprehensive book filled with engaging tales and fresh insights that even diehard Beatles fans will find illuminating.” —Philip Goldberg, author of American Veda: From Emerson and The Beatles to Yoga and Meditation, How Indian Spirituality Changed the West This eye-opening book draws back the curtain on the Beatles’ experiments with psychedelics, meditation, chanting, and Indian music. Among many shocking revelations never before revealed, we discover who invented "raga rock" (not the Beatles), the real identity of rare Indian instruements and musicians on their tracks, which Beatle was the best meditator (not George), why the Beatles left India in a huff, John and George’s attempts to return, Maharishi’s accurate prediction, and who Sexy Sadie, Jojo, Bungalow Bill, Dear Prudence, Blackbird, My Sweet Lord, Hare Krishna, and the Fool on the Hill really were. “This book reminds us in illuminating fashion why Susan is the premier thinker about India’s key influence upon the direction of the Beatles’ art. In vivid and stirring detail, she traces the Fabs’ spiritual awakening from Bangor to Rishikesh and beyond.” —Kenneth Womack, author of John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life Half a century later, the Beatles have sold more records than any other recording artist. A new generation wants to relive the magic of the flower-power era and is now discovering the message of this iconic band and its four superstars. For people of all nations and ages, the Beatles’ mystique lives on. The Inner Light is Susan Shumsky’s gift to their legacy.

Download or read book Caste and the City written by Deeba Zafir and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at Dalits in the city and examines the nature of Dalit aspirations as well as the making of an urban sensibility through an analysis of hitherto unexamined short stories of some of the first- and second-generation as well as contemporary Dalit writers in Hindi. Tracing the origins of the emergence of Dalit critical consciousness to the arrival of the Dalits into the print medium, after their migration to the city, this book examines their transactions with modernity and the emancipatory promises it held out to them. It highlights the literary tropes that mark their fiction, specifically those short stories which take up urban themes, and shows how even in seemingly caste-neutral spaces caste discrimination is present. The book also undertakes an examination of the stories by contemporary Dalit women writers in Hindi – Rajat Rani Meenu and Anita Bharti – who have posed a radical challenge to both the mainstream feminist movement and the Dalit movement. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian literature, especially Hindi literature, Dalit studies, subaltern history, postcolonial studies, political science, and sociology as well as the informed general reader.
