Book excerpt: A triaxial testing system is described for obtaining reliable data for measuring stiffness and damping of a sand by applying cyclic load in the frequency range between 0.005 and 2.0 Hz. The system is equipped with LDTs to measure axial deformations locally, gap sensors (GSs) to measure axial and radial deformations, and a load-cell. The data acquisition units of these components were critically examined for the possible existence and the influences of time lag in the stress-strain responses of cyclic load. For the measurement of a pair of corresponding stress and strain, data acquisition systems consisting of various electronic transducers must be identical to each other. Damping ratio evaluated with axial strain by the inductive-type sensor GS was found unreliable when used with a strain-gage type load cell to measure deviator stress. The problem was totally absent in the pair of load cell and LDTs as they are strain-gage type devices having similar data acquisition units. Using the latter combination, the stiffness was observed independent of frequency, while damping showed noticeable dependency on the frequency of loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solutions for soil engineering and soil-structure interaction problems need realistic and pertinent experimental and modelling tools. In this work, extensive developments proposed by the invited speakers of the Lyon International Symposium held in September 2003 are presented, including experimental investigations into deformation properties; laboratory, in-situ and field observation interpretations; behaviour characterisation and modelling; and case histories. The contributions include recent investigations into anisotropy and non-linearity, the effects of stress-strain-time history, ageing and time effects, yielding, failure and flow, cyclic and dynamic behaviour. In addition, advanced geotechnical testing is applied to real engineering problems, and to ways of synthesising information from a range of sources while engaging in practical site characterisation studies.

Book excerpt: The material in this work is focused on recent developments in research into the stress-strain behavior of geomaterials, with an emphasis on laboratory measurements, soil constitutive modeling and behavior of soil structures (such as reinforced soils, piles and slopes). The latest advancements in the field, such as the rate effect and dynamic behavior of both clay and sand, behavior of modified soils and soil mixtures, and soil liquefaction are addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although the triaxial compression test is presently the most widely used procedure for determining strength and stress-deformation properties of soils, there have been no books published on triaxial testing since the 1962 second edition of the landmark work The Measurement of Soil Properties in the Triaxial Test by Bishop and Henkel. It is apparent there is a need to document advances made in triaxial testing since publication of Bishop and Henkel's book and to examine the current state of the art in a forum devoted solely to triaxial testing. Because of increasing versatility brought about by recent developments in testing techniques and equipment, it is also important that the geotechnical profession be provided with an up-to-date awareness of potential uses for the triaxial test."--Overview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of time on the strength and deformation characteristics of various materials can assume importance in a variety of engineering problems. The time dependent mechanical behavior of soil is highly complex and can impact a broad range of applications such as in situ testing, seismic response, landslides, and embankment performance. This volume provides an update on the state of research and practice in the area of soil time effects. Emphasis is placed on laboratory and field developments, modeling time dependent behavior, rate dependence in a variety of soils, from subtropical soils to subglacial till, and on new applications such as soils reinforced with geosynthetics and inclusion dowels. Models are provided that include the influence of soil structure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of testing procedures and material characteristics on the cyclic triaxial strength of cohesionless soils were reviewed with the intent of categorizing the significance of these factors for cognizance in future testing standards. It was found that specimen preparation methods, differences between intact and reconstituted specimens, density, and prestraining have major effects on cyclic strength. Intermediate but significant effects influencing cyclic strength are confining stress, loading wave form, material grain size (D50) and gradation, overconsolidation ratio (OCR), and consolidation stress ratio (Kc). Other factors having minor effects are freezing intact specimens, loading frequency, specimen size, and frictionless caps and bases.
