Der Zuschauer will seinen Spaß haben. Deswegen geht er ins Kino. Da scheint die Philosophie mit ihren intellektuell fordernden, oft nur schwer verständlichen Diskursen und manchmal Jahrhunderte dauernden Disputen reichlich deplaziert. Doch das ist sie nicht. Spielfilme sind zwar Unterhaltung, aber keine Berieselung. Der Kinobesucher ist zwar Zuschauer, aber dabei keineswegs so passiv, wie manche Theorien ihn erscheinen lassen. Filme fordern, wie andere Kunstwerke, die Wahrnehmung des Betrachters heraus, weil in ihnen (schon durch die filmtypischen Eigenschaften wie Kadrierung und Montage) nichts so erscheint, wie wir es aus dem Alltag kennen. Das Mechanische, Automatische, die Routinen unserer Alltagswahrnehmung werden verfremdet und aufgebrochen. Dabei spielt der Zuschauer eine höchst aktive Rolle: Denn erst in seinen mentalen Prozeßen entsteht diese Verfremdung.“Der Zuschauer sucht im Werk aktiv nach Hinweisen [cues] und reagiert darauf mit den Wahrnehmungsfähigkeiten [viewing skills], die er durch seinen Umgang mit anderen Kunstwerken und mit dem Alltagsleben erworben hat”. Das Anschauen eines Films ist ein Ereignis von größter mentaler Aktivität. Der Zuschauer akzeptiert nicht nur, daß er dieser geistigen Anstrengung unterzogen wird, er verlangt es sogar. Offenbar ist es nämlich genau diese Aktivität, dieses Suchen und Finden von Hinweisen, wie er die Handlungselemente untereinander, aber auch mit seinem Leben, mit seinen innersten Gefühlen und Problemen verbinden kann, das, was ihm beim Filmesehen Vergnügen und Spaß bereitet. Im täglichen Leben - im Beruf, im Straßenverkehr, im Kaufhaus - spielt Philosophie (für die meisten) keine Rolle: Alles wird routiniert, automatisch, pragmatisch erledigt. Im Film ist das anders: Hier erwartet der Zuschauer die Herausforderung, das Besondere, das, was im Alltag nicht vorkommt oder zu kurz kommt. Hier kann in dramatischer Form (ähnlich dem Theater) das ausgetragen werden, was den Menschen in seinem Innersten bewegt und berührt. Dazu gehören insbesondere die menschlichen Grundfragen und -probleme, also genau jener Bereich, mit dem sich die Philosophie beschäftigt.

Jovanovic critically engages Brechts ideas and their most influential interpretations in film studies, from apparatus theory in the 1970s to the presently dominant cognitivist approach.
