Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the survival rate in children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer has steadily improved, with a corresponding decline in the cancer-specific death rate. Although the improvements in survival are encouraging, they have come at the cost of acute, chronic, and late adverse effects precipitated by the toxicities associated with the individual or combined use of different types of treatment (e.g., surgery, radiation, chemotherapy). In some cases, the impairments resulting from cancer and its treatment are severe enough to qualify a child for U.S. Social Security Administration disability benefits. At the request of Social Security Administration, Childhood Cancer and Functional Impacts Across the Care Continuum provides current information and findings and conclusions regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of selected childhood cancers, including different types of malignant solid tumors, and the effect of those cancers on childrenâ (TM)s health and functional capacity, including the relative levels of functional limitation typically associated with the cancers and their treatment. This report also provides a summary of selected treatments currently being studied in clinical trials and identifies any limitations on the availability of these treatments, such as whether treatments are available only in certain geographic areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade of tremendous progress in the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to malignant lymphoma, optimal treatment strategies are now based not only on accurate diagnosis but also on thorough evaluation of clinical and molecular risk factors. Even more importantly, molecular targeted approaches have been shown to be effective in the treatment of distinct lymphoma subtypes. Against this background, clinical management of especially the rare lymphomas remains a challenge for the general oncologist. This book provides a comprehensive overview of current treatment strategies in these rare lymphoma subtypes. Experts in the field from around the world describe histomorphology in a clinically relevant manner, consider the role of risk factors in detail, and discuss the spectrum of therapeutic approaches. Special emphasis is placed on the translation of molecular science into clinical care, and a disease-specific algorithm is proposed for each entity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a book dedicated to rare cancer management? Given the large variety of rare cancers, they take up a significant part of our daily practice. Therefore, we owe it to our patients with rare tumours that we use the knowledge gained in the treatment of the more common cancers to provide them with a better future. This knowledge comes from recent developments in molecular diagnostics, systemic treatments with new drugs and targeted therapies together with advanced technologies in the areas of radiology and radiation therapy. Our authors have analysed the literature and recommend treatments for rare cancers based on results from past studies. We hope that this book will be an aid to those treating rare cancer cases about which, up to now, little has been published, and will reassure our patients that they have not been forgotten.

The sixty-two chapters are divided into sections on Chronic Leukemias and Related Disorders, Acute Leukemias, Myeloma and Related Disorders, Lymphomas, and Supportive Care, with a devoted editor for each section. This extensively revised and updated edition reflects the tremendous progress in the science and treatment of hematologic malignancies during the eight years since the third edition in 1995. Revisions and new chapters include coverage of stem cell transplantation, molecular genetics, monoclonal antibodies, and new treatment modalities. The excellent discussions of current therapies for all hematologic neoplasms are more detailed than those in general oncology or hematology texts, making this an essential reference for all hematologists and oncologists.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms that initially present as peripheral blood abnormalities, with either cytopenias or elevated peripheral blood counts, as well as non-neoplastic conditions that may raise concern for a hematologic malignancy. The scope of the book includes myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), mixed myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN), as well as lymphomas and lymphoid leukemias that typically present initially with peripheral blood abnormalities. Within each category, a comprehensive list of differential diagnoses is discussed. For each disease entity, the reader is updated with new molecular genetic data, biomarkers, and recent applications of immunophenotyping, and how to incorporate the new information in disease diagnosis and classifications is illustrated, including the use of diagnostic algorithms where appropriate. The book employs the revised WHO Classification of Hematopoietic Neoplasms for all disease entities. Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders will serve as a very useful resource for pathologists, pathologists in training, hematologists and medical technologists who are involved in the clinical work-up of patients with bone marrow and blood neoplasms. It will provide a practical and concise yet comprehensive review.
