Book Synopsis The Politics of Survival by : Steven M. Zdatny
Download or read book The Politics of Survival written by Steven M. Zdatny and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-01-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of the general political inclinations of the petite bourgeoisie, and especially its relationship to fascism, is one of the major questions currently facing historians dealing with European society in the past one hundred years. Independent artisans have at best been seen as an anachronism in the industrial age. Often, they are regarded as the social basis of the fascist movements of the 1920s and 30s because of their supposedly reactionary class interests. Unfortunately, such sweeping analyses--by both Marxists and non-Marxists alike--have been based largely on one case, that of Germany. It is France however, that has been considered the pre-eminent nation of the petit bourgeois, and fascism had only limited appeal there. This is the central question Zdatny addresses in this book as he examines the social and political history of the archetypical petite bourgeois, the self-employed craftsmen of France.

The work of British and North American academics, writing in English on French accounting history is also illustrated from the 1930s (Howard, Edwards), through to the 1960s (Parker) and the more recent research of Standish, Fortin and Bhimani. An abstract of each contribution is given in both English and French.

Book Synopsis Survival by Association by : Barbara Marian Welch
Download or read book Survival by Association written by Barbara Marian Welch and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of the European Economic Community in 1957 put preferential agreements with non-European trading partners in jeopardy, suggesting the spectre of economic ruin for small Caribbean territories dependent on only one or two crops. Yet, surprisingly, certain industries, notably the banana industry, are still vital elements in Eastern Caribbean economics almost forty years later. How have they survived? Barbara Welch attempts to answer this question by comparing the banana industries of Dominica, St Lucia, Martinique, and Guadeloupe and analysing the critical role of the banana growers' associations in preserving a precarious status quo.

Book Synopsis Finances publiques et performance des entreprises by : International Institute of Public Finance. Congress
Download or read book Finances publiques et performance des entreprises written by International Institute of Public Finance. Congress and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of the 43rd Congress of the International Institute of Public Finance was "Public Finance and the Performance of Enterprises." The title reflected profound changes in the thinking and approaches of economists traced back to economic developments such as the worldwide slowing down of economic growth, dwindling of productivity increases, growing unemployment, and rampant increase in public debt experienced during the 1970s and 80s. The Congress was not primarily concerned therefore with the economic efficiency of particular enterprises, but with the interface of Public Finance and the behavior of enterprises. The intent was to detect how fiscal policy decisions effect the behavior of enterprises and how this in turn influences the overall performance of an economy--to seek microeconomic foundations for macroeconomic relationships. This volume presents the proceedings of the 43rd Congress with papers from numerous international contributors.

Book Synopsis The Fifth Republic at Twenty by : William G. Andrews
Download or read book The Fifth Republic at Twenty written by William G. Andrews and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first twenty years of the Fifth Republic encompass four presidential elections, alternating political control of the National Assembly, and years of rapid economic growth and contraction. Thus a variety of events now allow an evaluation of the efficacy of the Fifth Republic. The chapters of this book examine: the governmental framework and various political groups that have vied for control of it; industrial development and modernization; education and culture; and foreign policy. Containing both favorable and critical assessments, the book provides a comprehensive balance sheet on the Fifth Republic and the influence of Charles de Gaulle. Its 25 essays were written by such well-known scholars as Crozier, Gagnon, Gourévitch, Ross, Suleiman, and others, as well as some of the younger generation of French specialists, with concluding synthesis by Stanley Hoffmann. The book features an essay of historical importance on the Constitution of the Fifth Republic by the Constitution's own "father," the former Prime Minister of France, Michel Debré. Looking into the areas of government, politics, economy, society, culture, and foreign policy, this volume gives the reader an understanding of the considerable impact of Charles de Gaulle's administration on contemporary France.

Book Synopsis Immigrant Labor and Racial Conflict in Industrial Societies by : Gary P. Freeman
Download or read book Immigrant Labor and Racial Conflict in Industrial Societies written by Gary P. Freeman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to describe how the elites in two political systems grappled with the potentially explosive influx of foreign labor, Gary Freeman analyzes and compares the ways in which the British and the French governments responded to immigration and racial conflict over a thirty-year period during the post-war era. In addition to comparing the policy records of the two countries, the author focuses on the process by which political and social phenomena become defined as public problems and how alternative responses to these problems are generated. His broader aim is to provide a standpoint from which to evaluate the more general problem-solving capability of the political systems under consideration. Professor Freeman finds that by 1975 both Britain and France had instituted tightly controlled, racially discriminatory, temporary contract-labor systems. Despite this basic similarity, however, he notes three distinctions between the two cases: while the French attempted to adapt immigration to their economic needs, the British failed to seize this opportunity; while the British moved toward an elaborate race relations structure, the French relied on criminal law and the economic self-interest of the worker to prevent outbreaks of racial violence; and the British were much more affected than the French by fears of immigration and racial conflict.
