Book Synopsis Alternative Media in Canada by : Kirsten Kozolanka
Download or read book Alternative Media in Canada written by Kirsten Kozolanka and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alternative media hold the promise of building public awareness and action against the constraints and limitations of media conglomeration and cutbacks to public broadcasting. These media are becoming key venues for community expression and political debate, but what is it that makes them alternative? The contributors to this path-breaking volume answer this question by examining the evolution of various kinds of alternative media – including indigenous, anarchist, ethnic, and feminist media – against the backdrop of political, economic, and cultural developments in Canada. They get at the heart of alternative media by focusing on the three interconnected dimensions that define them: structure, participation, and activism. Alternative Media in Canada not only reveals how alternative media are enabled and constrained within Canada’s complex media and policy environment; it also shows that, in the context of globalization, the Canadian experience parallels media and policy challenges in other nations.

Book Synopsis Small Nations, High Ambitions by : X. Hubert Rioux
Download or read book Small Nations, High Ambitions written by X. Hubert Rioux and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the importance that entrepreneurship and start-up businesses in technology-intensive sectors like life sciences, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, financial technologies, software and others have come to assume in economic development, the access of entrepreneurs to appropriate levels of finance has become a major focus of policymakers in recent decades. Yet, this prominence has led to a variety of policy models across countries and even within countries, as different levels of government have adapted to new challenges by refining or transforming pre-existing institutions and crafting new policy tools. Small Nations, High Ambitions investigates the roots of such policy diversity at the "subnational" level, offering in-depth accounts of the evolution of Quebec's and Scotland's policy strategies in the entrepreneurial finance sector and venture capital more specifically. As compared to other regions and provinces in the United Kingdom and Canada, Quebec and Scottish venture capital ecosystems rely on a high degree of state intervention, either direct (through public investment funds) or indirect (through government-backed, hybrid, or tax-advantaged funds). These two regions can thus be described as "sponsor states," heavily involved in the strategic backing of innovative businesses. Whereas most of the literature on venture capital has focused on economic variables to explain variations in policy models, this book seeks to explain policy divergence in Quebec and Scotland through political and ideological lenses. Its main argument is that the development of venture capital ecosystems in these regions was underpinned by Québécois and Scottish nationalisms, which induced preferences for policy asymmetry and state intervention.
Book Synopsis Global Securities Litigation and Enforcement by : Pierre-Henri Conac
Download or read book Global Securities Litigation and Enforcement written by Pierre-Henri Conac and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 1363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Securities Litigation and Enforcement provides a clear and exhaustive description of the national regime for the enforcement of securities legislation in cases of misrepresentation on financial markets. It covers 29 jurisdictions worldwide, some of them are important although their law is not well known. It will be an invaluable resource for academics and students of securities litigation, as well as for lawyers, policy-makers and regulators. The book also provides a comprehensive contribution debate on whether public or private enforcement is preferable in terms of development of securities markets. It will appeal to those interested in the legal origins theory and in comparative securities law, and shows that the classification of jurisdictions within legal families does not explain the differences in legal regimes. While US securities law often serves as a model for international convergence, some of its elements, such as securities class actions, have not been adopted worldwide.
Book Synopsis Modes of Migration Regulation and Control in Europe by : Jeroen Doomernik
Download or read book Modes of Migration Regulation and Control in Europe written by Jeroen Doomernik and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Europe, immigration is a politically potent issue—especially when it comes to the treatment of asylum seekers and illegal labor immigrants. This volume draws the reader into the complex and contradictory world of migration regulation and control, covering the wide range of different policy approaches that aim to control the entry and residence of non-EU citizens. Revealing the common framework, tendencies, and policy convergences brought about less by design than a common concern about migration’s impact on the future of the EU, Modes of Migration Regulation and Control in Europe questions the effectiveness of additional efforts in terms of their fiscal and societal costs. “This important book emphasizes that European countries individually and collectively are converging in their efforts to manage migration.”—Philip Martin, University of California, Davis

Book Synopsis La vie privée à l’ère du numérique by : REY Bénédicte
Download or read book La vie privée à l’ère du numérique written by REY Bénédicte and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Court of Justice is the principal forum for countries seeking to resolve legal disputes with one another. Failings of the International Court of Justice argues that ICJ decisions - although treated with great respect by international lawyers - are often wrong and do not merit the deference they receive. In this book, A. Mark Weisburd explains the legal basis for the Court's work, and explores the cases where legal errors are prevalent.
