Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the North, or at least the idea of it, has slowly made its way back to our consciousness, a notion that the North is synonymous with a lawless, rugged freedom. But at first glance Yellowknife, NWT is actually a somewhat disappointing modern capital city. There are tall buildings, yoga pants, a Walmart and a lot of government jobs. None the less, if you dig a little deeper, you do find that alternative off-grid reality. Barely five minutes from the downtown core, wedged between million dollar houses, you find little shacks where people exist without running water and use honey buckets for toilets. When Alison McCreesh moved from Quebec to Yellowknife she quickly fell in love with the quirky ways in which it seemed possible to live up North. Part travelogue, part comic book, part love story and part guide to the North and its quirky inhabitants Ramshackle spans her first summer north of 60.

This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Old House meets Wayne’s World in this zany guide to designing and building tiny homes Derek Diedricksen has always had a love for small, modest houses ever since his father gave him the book Tiny Tiny Houses by Lester Walker for his tenth birthday. Combining his artistic abilities, wild imagination, and his passion for small houses, he self-published Humble Homes, Simple Shacks, Cozy Cottages, Ramshackle Retreats, Funky Forts, and Whatever the Heck Else we could Squeeze in Here in 2009. This book is a collection of Diedricksen’s creative/imaginative sketches for building small houses, shacks, cottages, and forts. The sketches are accompanied with hand-written commentary, both instructive and comical. Derek’s main purpose is to get your creative juices flowing and encourage you to get off the couch and use your hands. Believing that specific building plans squash creativity, he avoids too many detailed instructions, giving you the chance to put your own creative spin on your very own small abode (even if it is just in your imagination).

Download or read book Ramshackle Ode written by Keith Leonard and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Intriguing and triumphant, Leonard’s collection embodies the subject matter it so aptly depicts, whether it’s a storm or steeple or meadow."—Booklist "In his lovely first collection, Pushcart Prize nominee Leonard offers poems both tough and tender about becoming a man—effectively so, as these works are not full of false bravado but touching reflection...Charmed and sturdy poems for a wide range of readers."—Library Journal "Keith Leonard’s Ramshackle Ode is a brilliant, heart breaking, sometimes funny, always surprising celebration of love and attachment, of all the ways our connection to others—friends, lovers, children—makes us hostages to fortune. The force of imagination and the urgent desire to praise, to care for and cultivate is always at every point tested by the equal force of depredation and defilement. This is a terrific and memorable first book. Leonard’s voice is powerfully distinct and fresh, and it’s one I’m sure we’ll be hearing with gratitude for years to come."—Alan Shapiro "The poems in this solid collection offer praise for the everyday world, even if coming to terms with that world entails a measure of surrender. That world is given to us, we are included in it, and yet the heart and the mind must be pried open in order to receive and realize how much of that world may lie beyond us. Poetry is the ages-old means to see beyond, to glimpse what’s out there and to praise even what we don’t yet know. These poems do not linger on grief; instead, they reveal a heart that has been opened to love and a mind flung out to wonder. That is the solemn human journey. No rest for the wicked, is the common expression. No rest for the joyful and compassionate either. That is the discovery these poems field, like pop-flies and grounders in a backyard baseball game played so long ago in youth it has the resonance of myth. These poems have earned their wisdom, and this book is a gift I happily hold in my hands."—Maurice Manning “If you want to know what the good, serious, work—by which I mean digging and plowing and axing and building and sewing and holding—of joy—which includes, yes, no kidding, sorrow, loss, heartbreak, the whole abundant mess—might make of the world, of a family, of a life—goddamn, goddamn—I think this book might give you an idea. It’s kind of the hardest work, joy. Which makes Ramshackle Ode one of the hardest working books I’ve read in a long time.”—Ross Gay “Ramshackle. Synonyms: neglected, gone to rack and ruin, beat-up—and aren't we? Isn't our house in tumbledown? Somedays it seems it's all getting to be too much now, that you're beat up just by living. Ramshackle Ode is more than a great book of poems, it's a tent revival, a people's sweaty redemption. Keith Leonard has come right in the nick of time to remind us: inside each our hearts thumps an ecstatic hot night of healing, and raise that tambourine! —hallelujah be, there's still a song, goddamnit there's still a chance to sing.” —Rebecca Gayle Howell —
Book Synopsis It's Hard to Be a Person by : Brett Newski
Download or read book It's Hard to Be a Person written by Brett Newski and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years ago, somewhere on the Internet, I posted a few dumb drawings making fun of my own anxiety and depression. The response to them was warmer than anticipated, and people kept asking for more. Blending humor with pure depression seemed to strike a chord with a decent amount of people. So I kept going, and after about three years of drawing, I had enough dumb drawings for a book. Mental health is a serious thing, and it gets heavier when humans don't talk about it outwardly. I bottled up feelings for many years. Feelings I considered "dark", "weak", "downhearted", "embarrassing", "shameful" or any number of self-deprecating words. But after saying (or drawing) them out loud to people, all that weight went away and I realized it was normal to feel these feelings.Humor has always been a primary mode of therapy for me. I still make fun of my own anxiety and "depresh" as catharsis. I sing about it on tour, talk about it on my podcast, and draw pictures of it here in this book. Putting my formerly-private-feelings out into the world has been tremendous therapy for me, and I wish I would've done it sooner.Over the span of many years, I've been illustrating the "hacks", "strategies", or "exercises" that have worked best for me in combating the struggles in my head. More than anything I want this book to be useful for people. I'm not a doctor, just a person who spends too much time in my head. The objective of It's Hard to Be a Person is not to give unsolicited advice, but to hopefully save you some headaches on the long n' winding road of life in your brain.
