Book excerpt: This volume is a presentation of love poems written by the author in response to the absence of his love. Upon his loves return to her homeland in order to complete her studies, the author felt strongly compelled to pen deeply emotional poetry in an attempt to express both his intense love for her, and his own sorrow at her absence. Upon reading the poems, one clearly begins to discern that they convey a range of different moods. Some are a joyful celebration of Ramonas beauty; some are a lamentation of her absence; one or two even show indignation at what the author deems to be the unfair treatment directed towards him. In spite of this wide array of moods conveyed by the author, it is abundantly clear that these poems are borne out of an intense love for Ramonaa love often tinged with pain. Before publishing this volume, the author commissioned a traditional hand bound copy of these poems as a personal gift to Ramona, the woman who inspired them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book allows philosophers, literary theorists, and education specialists to come together to offer a series of readings on works of children's literature. Each of their readings is focused on pairing a particular, popular picture book or a chapter book with philosophical texts or themes. The book has three sections--the first, on picturebooks; the second, on chapter books; and the third, on two sets of paired readings of two very popular picturebooks. By means of its three sections, the book sets forth as its goal to show how philosophy can be helpful in reappraising books aimed at children from early childhood on. Particularly in the third section, the book emphasizes how philosophy can help to multiply the type of interpretative stances that are possible when readers listen again to what they thought they knew so well. The kinds of questions this book raises are the following: How are children's books already anticipating or articulating philosophical problems and discussions? How does children's literature work by means of philosophical puzzles or language games? What do children's books reveal about the existential situation the child reader faces? In posing and answering these kinds of questions, the readings within the book thus intersect with recent, developing scholarship in children's literature studies as well as in the psychology and philosophy of childhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Original and illuminating."—The New York Times Book Review In her most ambitious work since In the Time of Butterflies, Julia Alvarez tells the story of a woman whose poetry inspired one Caribbean revolution and of her daughter whose dedication to teaching strengthened another. Camila Henriquez Urena is about to retire from her longtime job teaching Spanish at Vassar College. Only now as she sorts through family papers does she begin to know the woman behind the legend of her mother, the revered Salome Urena, who died when Camila was three. In stark contrast to Salome, who became the Dominican Republic's national poet at the age of seventeen, Camila has spent most of her life trying not to offend anybody. Her mother dedicated her life to educating young women to give them voice in their turbulent new nation; Camila has spent her life quietly and anonymously teaching the Spanish pluperfect to upper-class American girls with no notion of revolution, no knowledge of Salome Urena. Now, in 1960, Camila must choose a final destination for herself. Where will she spend the rest of her days? News of the revolution in Cuba mirrors her own internal upheaval. In the process of deciding her future, Camila uncovers the truth of her mother's tragic personal life and, finally, finds a place for her own passion and commitment. Julia Alvarez has won a large and devoted audience by brilliantly illuminating the history of modern Caribbean America through the personal stories of its people. As a Latina, as a poet and novelist, and as a university professor, Julia Alvarez brings her own experience to this exquisite story. Julia Alvarez’s new novel, Afterlife, is available now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of why Plato censored poetry in his Republic has bedeviled scholars for centuries. In Exiling the Poets, Ramona A. Naddaff offers a strikingly original interpretation of this ancient quarrel between poetry and philosophy. Underscoring not only the repressive but also the productive dimension of literary censorship, Naddaff brings to light Plato's fundamental ambivalence about the value of poetic discourse in philosophical investigation. Censorship, Nadaff argues, is not merely a mechanism of silencing but also provokes new ways of speaking about controversial and crucial cultural and artistic events. It functions philosophically in the Republic to subvert Plato's most crucial arguments about politics, epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. Naddaff develops this stunning argument through an extraordinary reading of Plato's work. In books 2 and 3, the first censorship of poetry, she finds that Plato constitutes the poet as a rival with whom the philosopher must vie agonistically. In other words, philosophy does not replace poetry, as most commentators have suggested; rather, the philosopher becomes a worthy and ultimately victorious poetic competitor. In book 10's second censorship, Plato exiles the poets as a mode of self-subversion, rethinking and revising his theory of mimesis, of the immortality of the soul, and, most important, the first censorship of poetry. Finally, in a subtle and sophisticated analysis of the myth of Er, Naddaff explains how Plato himself censors his own censorships of poetry, thus producing the unexpected result of a poetically animated and open-ended dialectical philosophy.

Book excerpt: The term Old Settlers refers to the group of mixed race people that came to MI in the late 1800's and settled in the newly opened land in the Mecosta, Isabella and Montcalm counties. The title is well known through out the area and most know it refers to that group and anyone who descended from them. Volume two covers the original Old Settlers that came whose last names begin with D-R and follows each one of their descendants through every generation down to the current living generations. It includes photographs, family stories, articles and obituaries. They were an amazing group who settled the land, cleared it, farmed it, built homes, schools, churches, roads, married each other and raised families. There are many historical sites and monuments still there that are overseen by their descendants. Our history is kept alive by thousands of descendants and hundreds who work on genealogy and share their knowledge.
