Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles Round London Town SO wrote Washington Irving, and the passage is a fitting introduction 'to the grand Old Minster of which every Londoner is proud, and which no visitor to the metropolis misses seeing. One way to it, among others, is still the King Street of our old rh'yme. AS to the man that keeps the Abbey tombs, he is a very reasonable being, who will leave us to wander in the Chapels at our own discretion, if we desire to do so; while on Mon days, Tuesdays, and holidays he is not even to be seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles in and Near London: Or London Afternoons It is a serious thing to add another to the number of London books, and having undertaken the task, I hope to carry it out seriously. I have avoided, as far as possible, the mention of matters over which there has been controversy. Where it has not been possible I have stated the result only the result, that is, as it appears to me. In all controversies the want of what hi arithmetic is called a common denominator is the great cause of doubt. Lately, to name an example, three students of London history had an argument as to the situation of Tyburn. No conclusion was arrived at, after much learning had been displayed and much ink shed, because the three had not first agreed as to what each meant by Tyburn. To one it was a place of public execution, to another it was a manor comprising a church and a village, to the third it was a brook Nevertheless, by many such controversies, carried on, for the most part, very good-humouredly, the history of London is gradually assuming scientific proportions At first, thirty or forty years ago, it had not got beyond the point at which it was left by the Elizabethans. A History of London was a mere list of events, often misstated. The same errors were repeated in book after book, and there was not the slightest attempt to get beyond the authorities of three centuries ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In London Town, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel Miss Hatchard being thus driven to rely upon her own resources, sent Sarah Ann for the nearest doctor, and that happening to be a parish one, he came readily enough, any sort of private patient being welcome to him. He was a coarse, vulgar-looking man, with long white teeth, and dyed whiskers, and a flashy breast pin - a doctor of the very lowest order of doctors. He made some coarse remark about the girl's beauty, and spoke in an offensively familiar way to Miss Hatchard, that raised an amiable wish in that worthy soul's breast to throw hot water over him; but she suppressed it, although the kettle was handy, and tried to keep him to the matter in hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outer Circle: Rambles in Remote London Where are we? I cried to the glooms And the glooms gave back: Sherrick Green. Sher rick Green, I mused. Sherrick Green. Now where in Middlesex or Hertfordshire is that And is it on the Great Central, the Northern, the Midland or on the north-western And how the devil am I to get back to town? How far we had travelled during the minutes that I lay prone I could not judge. My companions of the journey had suddenly melted into the dark ness, and with them the 'bus but a few yards distant some shrouded lights hinted at humanity. They seemed to hang in the middle air. They illuminated nothing of their surroundings, and threw no beam. Like respectable citizens, they kept themselves to themselves. I approached them, and found that they were attached to a small shop Wherein sweets, tobacco, toys and newspapers were hidden. I entered, bought a newspaper and some cigarettes, and inquired for a back number of Sexton Blake. While the good woman foraged for it I made talk. Nice part round here - Sherrick Green. Haven't been this way before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks and Talks About London London has so many aspects, that it has been well described as a subject always new. That hearty lover of our metropolis, Dr. Johnson, sitting in Bolt-court, said: "the happiness of London is not to be conceived but by those who have been in it. I will venture to say, there is more learning and science within the circumference of ten miles from where we now sit, than in all the rest of the kingdom." Again, Johnson says: "how different a place London is to different people," each person viewing it through the medium of one particular pursuit: "but the intellectual man is struck with it as comprehending the whole of human life in all its variety, the contemplation of which is inexhaustible." The isolation of London is well conveyed in Horace Walpole's experience, that there is no being alone but in a metropolis; and it is said - the old Dramatist's truism - that "the next-door neighbours don't know each other." The immensity of London has led to its being termed a province covered with houses: or, as Burke phrased it, "an endless addition of littleness to littleness, extending itself over a great tract of land." Johnson's definition is still more to the point: "if you wish to have a just notion of the magnitude of this city, you must not be satisfied with seeing its great streets and squares, but must survey the innumerable little lanes and courts. It is not in the showy evolutions of buildings, but in the multiplicity of human habitations whi6h are crowded together, that the wonderful immensity of London consists." And many years ago, when Southey began to study the Map of London, he was dismayed at the sight of its prodigious extent. To the man of a reflective turn of mind - to see the stir of the great Babel, And not feel the crowd, is endlessly suggestive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles by Rivers: The Avon The quiet little town of stratford-upon-avon rec ceivas more pilgrims from all lands than many a brilliant city rich in palaces and temples. The neighbourhood of this town has nothing very striking in its scenery; but many a wayfaring eu thusiast, with knapsack on his back, may be found tracing the course of the lucid Avon, or climb ing the wooded hills which overlook the hamlets of this richly cultivated district. The chief charm of this smiling country lies in the memory of one who was born and who died in this quiet little town - whose parents and children here also dwelt - who cultivated some of the fields which lie around his birthplace - but whose name has gone forth through all countries as the greatest name amongst the sons of England. A little volume referring to these pleasant and memorable places, as well as to other interesting associations of 'the Avon, may offer a fitting companionship to the wanderer by Avon's side, and be acceptable also to many who may never have the opportunity of looking upon the scenes where Shakspere had.
