The richest woman in England, being a widowed Duchess (and mad) would only remarry into royalty. Legend has it that Ralph dressed as the Emperor of China, and his servants in the same fashion, wooed and wed her. Reading this story made me want to know more about such an audacious man. I discovered that he had brought down a prime minister, dined with Louis XIV, helped bring William III to the throne, patronised famous scientists, playwrights and painters, and managed to cap his career with the ultimate prize - a ducal coronet. His country house still stands, occupied by his descendant and full of the treasures he collected. It also holds his archive (including many bundles of debtors' bills) that has provided the foundation for this biography.

Historical experience shows that revolutions are frequently accompanied by the invocation rather than the repudiation of law. No example is clearer than that of the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89. This study adds a new dimension to the literature of the Glorious Revolution by describing and analysing this central paradox: the revolutionaries tried to break the rules of the constitution and, at the same time, be true to them.

The subject of this book is the court of the later Stuart kings in the period 1660-1702. Its purpose is to provide an introduction to some of the emergent themes of court politics, culture and society. Marshall achieves this by analyzing the ritual side of court government in its structural, political and cultural guises.

Book excerpt: The reign of Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch, was a period of significant progress for the country: Britain became a major military power on land, the union of England and Scotland created a united kingdom of Great Britain, and the economic and political basis for the Golden Age of the eighteenth century was established. However, the queen herself has received little credit for these achievements and has long been pictured as a weak and ineffectual monarch dominated by her advisers. This landmark biography of Queen Anne shatters that image and establishes her as a personality of integrity and invincible stubbornness, the central figure of her age. Praise for the earlier edition: “A thoughtful and . . . authoritative study, easily the best thing we have on the Queen. Like Anne herself, it is eminently worthy.”—Angus McInnes, History “With the appearance of this volume, a generation of revision in Queen Anne studies comes to fruition.”—Henry Horowitz, American Historical Review “The best kind of biography, scholarly but sympathetic, as well as highly readable.”—John Kenyon, The Observer “Bold . . . startling . . . imaginative and persuasive.”—G.C. Gibbs, London Review of Books

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the service of Henri de Ruvigny, later earl of Galway, in France until the revocation of the edict of Nantes in 1685, his central role in transforming Ireland in the aftermath of the Glorious Revolution, and his service of the British monarchy as administrator, military commander and diplomat. The analysis rests on underutilized sources in French, shedding light on a hitherto overlooked civil servant in this crucial period of Irish and British history, wrought with constitutional crises, but also on the Protestant International and the lesser-known fronts of the war of 1689-1697.
