Book excerpt: When an advice columnist’s picture-perfect life implodes, she opts to go rogue in this hilarious, heartwarming romance from the author of Meet Me in Paradise. Violet Covington pens Dear Sweetie, the most popular advice column in the state of North Carolina. She has an answer for how to politely handle any difficult situation…until she discovers her husband, Sam, has been cheating on her. Furious and out of sensible solutions, Violet leaves her filter at the door and turns to her column to air her own frustrations. The new, brutally honest Dear Sweetie goes viral, sending more shock waves through Violet’s life. When she burns Sam’s belongings in a front-yard, late-night bonfire, a smoking-hot firefighter named Dez shows up to douse the flames, and an unexpected fling quickly shows potential to become something longer lasting. A lot of people want to see the old polished Violet return—including her boss, who finds her unpredictability hard to manage, and Sam, who’s begging for another chance. But Dez appreciates Violet just the way she is—in fact, he can’t get enough of her. The right answers don’t come easily when Violet finds herself at her own personal crossroads. But maybe, by getting real, Violet can write her own happy ending.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is simple yet ambitious: to produce, in a single volume, a detailed and complete history of the Raleigh cycle company of Nottingham, from its founding to the present. It covers not only bicycles but also motorcycles, cars, vans, munitions, motorcycle engines, and bicycle and motorcycle gears. The story of Raleigh is fascinating in many different respects - the people, the products, the production methods, and more. The personalities involved were many and various, ranging from the founder's ambition to make the best bicycles money could buy to anonymous "suits" almost running the company into the ground from fancy offices in New York. But Raleigh also deeply touched the lives of tens of thousands of other people who depended on it, directly or indirectly, particularly in and around the city of Nottingham.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina's capital city of Raleigh, nestled in the heart of the state, is a picturesque oak-canopied community founded in 1792. One of the few planned state capitals within the United States, the city has experienced tremendous growth since its creation, expanding from a small but busy 18th-century town to the modern-day anchor for one of America's largest technological centers. Historic Raleigh traces the city's transformation from its earliest days as a seat of state government to one of the South's premier Southern cities. Incorporating more than 200 vintage photographs, this volume features state government buildings such as the State Capitol and the Executive Mansion; six institutions of higher learning, including NC State, Meredith College, and Shaw University; the changing face of downtown and Fayetteville Street, which once was the heart of Raleigh's commercial district; the suburban explosion that began with Cameron Village, the first shopping center in the Southeast; the evolution of Raleigh's multi-cultural neighborhoods; and celebrations hosted by the city, including the state fair. The images, coupled with informative text, also delve into the ways in which national events, such as world wars and the Civil Rights Movement, affected Raleigh on the local level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Raleigh was truly the Renaissance man of Elizabethan England: soldier and diplomat serving in the wars between Spain and England, courtier and Captain of the Queen's Guard in Elizabeth’s flamboyant court, explorer of a New World and colonizer of Virginia, member of Parliament and devotee of science, musician and literary patron, historian and poet. A dashing and complex figure, often in advance of his times and rebellious against them, Raleigh had the misfortune not simply to combine brilliance and versatility with arrogance and intolerance, but to live beyond the expansiveness of Elizabeth’s reign into the sober times of her successor, James Stewart. Knighted by the Queen, Raleigh enjoyed her favor until he was eclipsed by Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. Thereafter his fortunes fell, and he was finally imprisoned and tried by James I on grounds of treason. This book, conveying the excitement and flavor of Raleigh and his times, offers a new judgment of the man, and particularly of the famous trial that led to his imprisonment in the Tower and to his subsequent execution for treason. Mr. Wallace points out that, though the charges against Raleigh were questionable, the trial was legally just. On the other hand, the law itself, the court procedure, and the behavior of the prosecutor, Sir Edward Coke, were essentially unjust. After Raleigh’s death, jurists rallied to his defense, and changes in law and procedure were finally instituted. The trial thus has a historic importance not only in Raleigh’s life but also in English legal history. Originally published in 1959. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
