Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible, practical resource for pasture-based rabbit production-complete with rabbit husbandry basics, enterprise budgets, and guidelines for growing, processing and selling rabbits commercially. In recent years, there has been talk in the food world that rabbits make more sense than chicken. In a country with a $41 billion broiler chicken industry, this might seem like a pretty bold statement, but it’s hardly unsubstantiated. And yet while media has been abuzz about the supposed super protein, very few farmers are stepping up to meet the rapidly increasing interest in sustainably raised rabbit meat. This is partly due to the lack of available resources in the field of rabbit husbandry. Raising Pastured Rabbits for Meat is the first book to address the growing trend of ecological rabbit husbandry for the beginning to market-scale farmer. Inspired by Daniel Salatin, who has long been considered the pioneer in integrated rabbit farming, Nichki Carangelo proves that a viable pasture-based rabbitry is not only possible and user-friendly, it’s also profitable. In Carangelo’s approach, happy, healthy rabbits are seasonally raised outside on pasture, using a pasture and wire hybrid system that promotes natural behaviors and a diverse diet, while effectively managing the associated risks. Raising Pastured Rabbits for Meat offers valuable information on how farmers can build their own rabbit enterprise from scratch and includes tips on breed selection, breeding techniques, nutrition guidelines, record keeping tools, slaughtering and butchering instructions, marketing advice, and enterprise guides to help farmers plan for profitability. This is an essential guide for anyone interested in integrating rabbits onto a diversified farm or homestead.

But there is even a better meat source that you have probably ignored for too long. Rabbit is a livestock that is surprisingly cheap to keep, but yet, very healthy as a meat source. This book teaches you how to raise rabbits for little or no cost at all. Breeding rabbits involves a few aspects, and I covered them all in this book. In this book, you will learn: How to select the right breeds that have a high meat turnover (not every type of rabbit suits meat production purposes; some are better as pets). The equipment you will need and how to get them cheaply. How to feed rabbits without pellets. How to take care of your rabbits and all the veterinary care needed. The health of your rabbit will influence the quality of meat you get at harvest. Some mouthwatering recipes you can prepare with rabbits as you look to reward your taste buds. What you have here is a tell-it-all. I am a rabbit breeder myself, and I am giving you workable strategies that have worked for me over the years. People think that keeping rabbits are expensive and stressful, but that is not correct. They just don't know the right set of hacks that can make the difference. I have used these hacks for quite a while now, and I have decided to share my little secrets with you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALL-NATURAL, HUMANE, AND PROFITABLE APPROACH TO PRODUCTION ON A SMALL SCALE Raising rabbits for meat should be considered a cornerstone of efficient and effective homesteading. Though never as popular as chickens, home-raised domestic rabbits were once a common meat source on the farm and in town. The popularity of rabbit as a food source, and thus as a type of livestock, has waned over the years as most folks turned away from producing their own food. With the recent resurgence of interest in quality, home-grown food, rabbit husbandry for meat production is primed for a comeback. Meat rabbits the specific breeds of rabbits that are large and produce a good meat-to-bone ratio are a kind of livestock often raised on small-scale homesteads. Rabbits are easy to keep and can do well on the homestead, even with limited space dedicated to them. They reproduce quickly and go from birth to consumption or reproduction size in just a few months. Rabbit's white meat has a high-quality flavor that needs to be eaten to be believed, but even on a more objective measure nutritional value compared to other domestic meats like chicken, beef, and pork rabbits come out on top. Rabbit meat has a better protein-to-fat ratio, is low in cholesterol, and has high concentrations of important vitamins and minerals. Once the decision to raise meat rabbits on the homestead has been made, the first step is to build a structure to house them: a rabbitry. The options for rabbitries can vary widely by the skills of the builder and the needs of the homestead. Rabbits can thrive in almost any climate as long as they are kept dry and have the ability to avoid cold direct winds, but have good ventilation. While colony keeping is an option, most keepers choose to keep each adult animal in an individual pen. Commercially available pens are usually a simple and versatile wire cage, available from most ag and feed stores, that can be used indoors or out, suspended, or placed on the ground or a shelf. These pens come individually or can be purchased and used in groups. Other pre-made rabbitry structures can vary greatly in size and cost and can be made for indoor or outdoor use. If building your own, there are free plans available online, or you can build your own design, as long as some basic criteria are met. When locating the rabbitry, ensure a supply of electricity for lights and fans. A water source and food storage should be as close as possible as well. Rabbits also need a feeder, a waterer, and a nesting box for birthing and raising kits. The nesting box can be purchased or built and should correspond to the size of the rabbit breed.
