What, and who, holds together its large corporate interests, small-government libertarians, social and racial traditionalists, and evangelical Christians? Raised Right pursues these questions through a cultural study of three iconic conservative figures: National Review editor William F. Buckley, Jr., President Ronald Reagan, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Examining their papers, writings, and rhetoric, Jeffrey R. Ancient Greek geographer Strabo once noted in the first century BC that "if Zeus were to stand up, he would unroof the temple."?Made of ivory and gold-plated bronze, the statue sat in an intricate throne of cedar inlaid with ivory, gold, ebony and precious gems. In Zeus??right hand, he held a small statue of the goddess of victory, Nike. In his left hand, there was a scepter with an eagle perched on top.?It is believed that the Roman Emperor Caligula was the cause of the statue?s destruction. According to Roman historian Suetonius, Caligula gave orders that statues of gods that were especially famous, including that of Zeus at Olympia, were to be brought from Greece in order to have their heads removed and a marble head of Caligula put in their place. According to legend, just as workers were moving stones to disassemble the Statue of Zeus, there was a loud moment of laughter, followed by the collapsing of scaffolding and the structure, killing some workers and leaving others to flee for their lives.?Until recently, historians and archaeologists debated the time period in which the statue was built. The recent discovery of Phidias??workshop in the 1950s confirms that the temple was completed around the third quarter of the fifth century BC. Today, archaeologists continue to study the techniques Phidias used to construct the temple and the statue, and admirers of Ancient Greece admire the statue?s place on the Ancient Wonders list.

Book excerpt: This is the study of an anonymous ancient work, usually called Joseph and Aseneth, which narrates the transformation of the daughter of an Egyptian priest into an acceptable spouse for the biblical Joseph, whose marriage to Aseneth is given brief notice in Genesis. Kraemer takes issue with the scholarly consensus that the tale is a Jewish conversion story composed no later than the early second century C.E. Instead, she dates it to the third or fourth century C.E., and argues that, although no definitive answer is presently possible, it may well be a Christian account. This critique also raises larger issues about the dating and identification of many similar writings, known as pseudepigrapha. Kraemer reads its account of Aseneth's interactions with an angelic double of Joseph in the context of ancient accounts of encounters with powerful divine beings, including the sun god Helios, and of Neoplatonic ideas about the fate of souls. When Aseneth Met Joseph demonstrates the centrality of ideas about gender in the representation of Aseneth and, by extension, offers implications for broader concerns about gender in Late Antiquity.

Only the written part of the examination is dealt with in detail, but the introduction contains hints on tackling the clinical sections which the authors hope the candidates will find valuable. There is, however, no substitute for clinical practice under supervision. The questions in Vll PREFACE the written section of the examination require short answers so that marking may be easy and objective. This book contains questions similar to those that may be encountered in the examination, but the answers have been expanded as a basis for discussion. It is hoped that this will encourage the candidate to read around the subjects covered, and the authors recommend that the questions are used as a basis for group discussion, as answers other than those in the text may be considered.
