The whole period owed much to the investment that Lord Ailsa put into the railway and laid the foundations for the eventual purchase by Government who had failed in their efforts to persuade the Isle of Man Railway Company to operate the line as a subsidised tourist attraction. The story is told in pictures form the authors personal point of view and includes some unusual photographs of the removal of the Peel, Ramsey and Foxdale lines.

The photographs included can only be described as sumptuous. There are 18 or so pages on the island s railways; the Steam Railway, the Manx Railway & the Snaefell Mountain Railway. About twelve pages are devoted to tramways, with civil and military aviation, featured on the next 20 pages (incidentally, my dad flew my mum to the IOM during the war - they met at RAF Heathhall in Dumfries - so that's one copy of the book spoken for already). This is followed by 30 pages of shipping photographs and information including lifeboats, wrecks, coastal steamers and pleasure boats. On the road we have fourteen pages of buses and 20 pages of cars & carriage from early motor charabancs to motor racing. Last but definitely not least is motorcycle racing - as befits an island so steeped in same. If you are interested in the Isle of Man in general or just some unique transport history you will definitely want this book.

American steam started to appear in the years prior to WW1, however, Englishman P.C. Dewhurst was the CME during the early 20th Century. The Jamaica Government Railway owned the system from 1900 and in 1960 this became the state-owned but independent Jamaica Railway Corporation. Dieselisation with British-built locos and railcars developed from the mid-1950s, indeed the JRC even bought some ex-LMS Stanier coaches from BR in 1964. Other diesels came from Canada, and France. The history is described fully and the routes are followed in detail with track diagrams and photos showing many key locations and the traffic operating. Steam & diesel locomotives, railcars and rolling stock all have their own chapters to give comprehensive coverage.
