Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky claims to be the birthplace of railroading west of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1832, the Lexington & Ohio Railroad (L&O) began to build track from Lexington to Louisville. Unfortunately the L&O got no further than Frankfort on the Kentucky River when it ran out of money. Railroad construction in Kentucky would stagnate until the 1850s when four companies started to build track, three were north-south and one east-west. An amalgamation of railroads using the name Kentucky Central would push south from Covington opposite Cincinnati OH, toward Chattanooga TN, but stalled at Nicholasville due to the Civil War. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) would build southward from Louisville for Nashville TN, and Memphis TN, reaching both cities as the Civil War started. The Mobile & Ohio Railroad (M&O) during the same period completed a railroad from Mobile AL, to Columbus KY, on the Mississippi River. The east-west track reached from Louisville eastward to a junction at Frankfort KY.

Book Synopsis The Railroad Photography of Donald W. Furler by : Scott Lothes
Download or read book The Railroad Photography of Donald W. Furler written by Scott Lothes and published by . This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Railroad Photography of Donald W. Furler showcases the black-and-white imagery of a master of the craft. Furler (1917-1994) grew up in New Jersey and helped pioneer the "action shot" to show trains at speed. He faithfully and dramatically documented the final decade of steam operations in the northeastern United States with technically-superior and often creative images portraying the trains in their environments. While his work appeared frequently in early issues of Trains magazine in the 1940s and 1950s, it has rarely been seen since. As someone who helped write the rules for railroad action photography, an examination of Furler's photography is long overdue.
Book Synopsis Trains of America by : Donald Heimburger
Download or read book Trains of America written by Donald Heimburger and published by Heimburger House Publishing Company. This book was released on 1990-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This large colorful volume highlights the late steam and early diesel era of America’s railroads during the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. This era was a time of great upheaval and tremendous progress for rail lines. Trains of America focuses on the period of time when steam locomotives were replaced by diesels, when lighter rail was replaced by heavy welded rail, when centralized traffic control became the norm and when employee rosters were downsized. Its 204 pages contain nearly 400 large, all-color freight and passenger train photos taken on 85 different railroads throughout the U.S. and Canada, such as the NYC, SF, B&O, CP, C&O, Milwaukee, CGW, CNW, Burlington, EJ&E, FEC, GN, GM&O, IC, KCS, L&N, MP, Pennsy and WP. Trains of America recreates the past in a variety of memorable color scenes, from main line steam locomotives pulling mile-long freight trains to 44-ton diesels rambling with a box car or two through New England rural woods. Our most popular title!
