Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railroad to the Pacific: Its General Character, Relative Merits, Etc It will, doubtless, be deemed presumptuous by many, In view of the fact, that surveys are now in progress for determining the relative merits of the several routes proposed for the Pacific Railroad, that any one should attempt, in anticipation of the results of those surveys, an investigation of the subject, for the purpose of submitting the same to the public. It b only from a firm conviction that the evidence already possessed is sufficient to bring the mind to a very correct conclusion, and that the additional information to be derived from the surveys, must tend to confirm, in the main, that conclusion, that the writer is induced to give these pages to the press. The project of a Railway to the Pacific is one of transcendent importance, in many points of view, and from the rapidity with which events are succeeding each other in our history as a nation, this great work, will, in all probability, soon be commenced, under efficient aid derived from the General Government. It is very important that the best route or routes (if more than one is attempted) should be selected, any error or mistake in this respect cannot, from the magnitude of the undertaking, be easily remedied, and its mischievous consequences will extend fer into the future, and affect the interests not of individuals, or of communities, or of States only, but of the whole civilized world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pacific Railroad Open, How to Go: What to See States lies beyond the Mississippi, not counting in the outlying purchase of Alaska, which will doubt less prove a very good thing when we have found out what to do with it. The Pacific Railroad fairly bisects this vast area east and west, as the Rocky Mountains the backbone and dividing line of the continent do north and south the two cutting it up into huge quarters, each of which would overlay all Europe this side of Russia, and flap lustily in the wind all around the edges. It will take us long to learn what there is on and in it; how long, in deed, to subjugate it to use and the ministries of civilization! But with one railroad of two thousand miles built across it in four years, and two others to follow within the present generation, 0111 strides in its conquest are at least on equal scale with its majesty and its mysteries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on the History of the Southern Pacific So far as the author knows there is no published study which discusses in detail the important business problems con netted with the history of the Southern Pacific Railroad lines. Most of the books which contain references to the Southern Pacific or to the Central Pacific limit themselves to a few chapters upon the romantic aspects of their construction The few works which treat of the later period confine themselves chiefly to particular episodes in Southern Pacific history, often with the deliberate attempt to discredit the railroad company. The truth is that most writers upon the Southern Pacific have relied upon the reports of the United States Pacific Railway Commission or on Bancroft's History of California, and very few have done original work from source material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building the Pacific Railway Fifty years have passed since most of the events noted within this volume were new. On May lo, 1869, at Promontory Point, fifty-six miles northwest of Ogden, Utah, the last rails were laid and the last spike was driven, completing the Pacific Railway for quick traffic between the East and the West. Two distinct books might be written upon the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad from the Missouri River, and of the Central Pacific Railroad from the Sacramento River - those iron trails that lengthened westward and eastward until they crossed the vacant space of 1770 miles and joined in the Utah desert. The one book should focus upon the actual building operations in the great open of plains, mountains and deserts; the other, upon the financial operations by the Credit Mobilier of the Union Pacific, and by Crocker & Co. and the Finance Company of the Central Pacific. The pages which here follow aim at providing the first-mentioned story. They are devoted mainly to the stress, the sweat, the toil by mind and body in order to achieve the physical problems. Deeds and romance a-plenty may be found, without resort to those disputed details that once made great names common property and are now relatively unimportant. That past is dead; an undying path brightens in the swath of Time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Northern Pacific Railroad and Connections The advent of the Northern Pacific Railroad, five years ago, as a competitor for through transcontinental business, marked a new era in railway passenger service between the East and the Pacific coast. The most notable feature in connection with the train service inaugurated by this new line was the introduction Of elegant dining cars, which were built at the Pullman Car Works, being marvels Of luxury and Of the most elegant design and finish. In these cars the passenger sits down to a bountiful spread, comprising all the delicacies of the season On both the Atlantic and Pacific coast, as well as the fish and game Obtained from the country through which the road passes, for which he pays the modest sum Of 75 cents per meal. Although the Northern Pacific Railroad stands alone in this respect, among the transcontinental lines in the United States, passengers by other routes being still obliged to depend upon the Old-fashioned, much-abused eating station, the management Of this line, not content with the great improvements made in the past, announces that on May lst, 1889, they will put in service between St. Paul and Minneapolis and Tacoma and Portland complete vestibuled passenger trains. These trains will be equipped with the latest improved, automatic Westinghouse brake, the Westinghouse air signal, Miller platforms, patent steel-tired wheels, and in fact, every appliance and improvement in the railway service that will contribute to the safety, convenience, Or comfort Of the traveler. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Explorations for Pacific Railroads, 1853-1855 An episode in the development of the trans-mississippi West to which but scant attention has been given in any history is the Pacific railroad survey of 1853 - 1855. This great reconnais sance deserves attention as the first attempt of the government at a comprehensive, systematic examination of the vast region lying between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean. It is not intended to minimize in any way the labors of the fur-traders, the travelers, and the earlier government explorers, of whom Emory, Stansbury, and Sitgreaves must stand side by side with Fremont. Through their efforts there existed a good general knowledge of the West; but when it was proposed to locate a transcontinental railroad, the dearth of accurate scientific infor mation was well recognized. All preexisting knowledge was brought to bear upon a few routes which were advocated in definite plans. For that reason I have seen fit to discuss rather fully the different plans in order to show their intimate connec tion with the railroad explorations. My study has been based almost entirely upon the government documents, and an attempt has been made to study every document bearing upon the subject. The orthography of place names is usually that of the documents. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Pacific Railway Though bound to the United States by many friendships and by the love I bear my children, I am not one of its citizens. I have never ceased to be a British subject. The military rank I have the honor to have held in the United States was obtained when the State in whose service I won it had been in process of reconstruction. It was obtained, therefore, outside conditions which did not exist at the time within the limits of that State - outside conditions of citizenship. I give this explanation as a simple matter of fact, but certainly not in a sense of apology for my acceptance of a distinction whose obtainment is a subject of pride with better men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Asa Whitney: Father of Pacific Railroads The climax of Whitney's agitation was reached in the year 1849, when he published a book giving the facts and arguments in favor of a transcontinental railroad, which he had carefully gathered together during many years of laborious effort. It was entitled Project for a Railroad to the Pacific. In that year committees of both houses of Congress again made reports favorable to his enterprise, but they were not approved by Congress itself.
