Book excerpt: This book was issued by the British War Office to all senior NCOs, warrant officers and officers in the Great War. It details many aspects of the British military art, starting with the war establishments of the British Army (cavalry and Infantry Divisions and ancillary units) and the Indian Army. The handbook details everyday military conduct in the field, and lays down the regulations and guidelines for marches, quarters, camp cooking, sanitation and water supply. There are chapters on orders and the means of communication, plus overseas operations, map reading and field sketching (the intelligence functions). Field engineering is dealt with too, along with tools and explosives, together with defensive systems, obstacles, and working parties. The minutiae of engineering is also laid bare, with knots, blocks and tackles, bridging and bridging expedients and demolitions laid down. Transport is covered in Chapter V, including convoys and movements by rail and by sea. Chapter VI deals with small arms and guns, the supply of ammunition, rations and fuel, together with their storage. Pay, clothing and field equipment is detailed, and so too is office work, discipline and courts martial. Added to this is a chapter on the army in India and other overseas dominions, and details of foreign armies. Here too are tables of comparison of such diverse matters as weights and measures (British and Indian), aeronautical terms and billeting orders. This handbook - issued in 1914 and revised in 1916 - gives a remarkably detailed picture of the rules and regulations governing the British and Indian armies at the mid-point of the First World War and is warmly recommended to all students of the period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At Cambridge, as an undergraduate of St. John's, I realized that, more than anything else, I wanted to fly.A lifelong fascination and love of flying and aircrafts is fuel for this engaging autobiography by G J Christopher Paul, CB, DFC; a man bitten by the aviation bug at an air display at the age of four, and thereafter a devotee. His remarkable RAF career was followed by an eventful civilian career in aviation, which saw him organize rallies at places such as Sywell, encouraging 'flying for fun'. Both halves of his flying life are detailed here in chronological order and in his own words. Minor additions have been made to offer technical descriptions to readers unfamiliar with Paul's aviation vocabulary. The fifty year span of his career covered an incredible period of aviation history; from gaining his license in the 1920s to his retirement in the 1970s, there was virtually no iconic or, for that matter, obscure aircraft that Christopher Paul did not fly. Included in the book is an extensive appendix in which Paul details, again in chronological order, every aircraft type he flew during his career. It is a veritable roll of honor of every conceivable aircraft, both British built and International, across arguably the most important period of aviation development.Interwoven with his own career progression and experiences are world events and situations. Coupled with this we can clearly see the development of aircraft over a period of over fifty years. Eloquently written, this is the autobiography of a man who described flying a Spitfire as having 'one's own wings'; the thrill of flight is translated here, and the effect is equally thrilling. A lively account of a life in the skies. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the latest addition to the History of Military Aviation series, Peter Dye describes how the development of the air weapon on the Western Front during World War I required a radical and unprecedented change in the way that national resources were employed to exploit a technological opportunity. World War I has long been recognized as an industrial war that consumed vast amounts of materiel and where logistical superiority gave the Allies an overwhelming advantage. The Bridge to Air Power is the first study that demonstrates how logistical competence provided a war-winning advantage for the Royal Flying Corps, the precursor to the Royal Air Force. It draws on a wide range of literature and original material to quantify these achievements while providing a series of illuminating case studies based around key battles. In particular, it highlights how the Royal Flying Corps’ logistical organization was able to maintain high levels of resilience and agility while sustaining military outputs under widely different operational conditions —successfully introducing many of the techniques that now comprise modern supply chain management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six Weeks of Blenheim Summer is a vivid and lyrical memoir of life as an RAF reconnaissance pilot in France during the hellish summer of 1940. It brings to life the fear, loneliness and pain that Alastair Panton and his comrades came to live with during those long weeks, as well as the bravery, camaraderie and humanity that made those unpredictable days more bearable. The aeroplane Panton captained throughout this intense period was a Bristol Blenheim Mark IV. He saw the Blenheim as his friend and saviour. It was the vehicle from which he and his crew were able to spot the enemy and save lives, repeatedly withstanding shooting and bombardment to facilitate dramatic landings and rescues. Yet despite these heroic adventures, culminating in his being shot down a fourth time, captured and made a prisoner of war, Panton describes Six Weeks of Blenheim Summer as a story of failure. Whilst he survived, so many of his friends and comrades did not, and this grief never left him. Panton's extraordinary book, written in the aftermath of the war but discovered posthumously, is edited and introduced by his granddaughter Victoria Panton Bacon. A candid and gripping read, this is very much the story of a pilot and his plane.
