Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique account of the development and operational use of air-to-air flight refuelling since its early beginnings in the USA and the UK to the equipment that is in use today. The author draws upon his life-long career as senior design engineer with the successful British company In-Flight Refuelling who were responsible for the development of the hose and drogue technique now preferred by many of the world's air forces. The story begins in the early 1920s when the art of air refuelling was part of the Barn Storming record-breaking attempts that were popular in the USA. It continues into the late thirties when successful experiments were made. Amazingly, the Royal Air Force were not interested in pursuing this great technical advantage during World War II and it was the USAAF who requested the British invention to experiment with on their B-17s and B-24s. The Korean War saw extended use of operational air-to-air refuelling for the first time and now the 'tanker fleet' is an essential unit in major air-forces around the world.

Book excerpt: This book gives a rare insight into the life inside the tanker squadrons of the Royal Air Force, viewed through the eyes of Tony Golds, one of the R.A.F. tanker fleets longest serving Navigator/Plotters. During his service career which spanned four decades, he flew in dozens of airplanes, for literally thousands of hours and covered something in excess of two million miles. Initially the prime role of the first tankers (Valiants) was to service the legendary English Electric Lightning interceptor fighters patrolling the North Sea. During his career, Tony served in every continent of the world, including a healthy series of tours at Ascension just after the Falklands War. He was in one of the tanker crews chosen to assist in devising the procedures needed to get both the Vulcans in the Black Buck operation down to the Falklands, and subsequently the Hercules C130 freighters to form the Ascension / Falklands air bridge, so vital for the support of the Falkland Islands, once the shooting war was over.

"Tooey" Spaatz Trophy * Appendix 2: Brigadier General Ross G. Hoyt Award * Appendix 3: Senior Master Sergeant Albert L. Evans Award On 1 January 1929, a tri-engined Fokker C-2 aircraft, with a crew of five aboard, climbed into the southern California sky. This aircraft, dubbed the Question Mark, was not history's first air refueling mission, but it played a crucial role in the beginning of air refueling efforts and in the development of the US Army Air Corps. In fact, the first attempts at air refueling started in 1921 with five-gallon gas cans. On 2 October 1921, a US Navy lieutenant in the back of a Huff-Daland HD-4 used a grappling hook to snag a gas can from a float in the Potomac River, and on 21 November, a wing walker with a gas can strapped to his back climbed from an airborne Lincoln Standard to a Curtiss JN-4 and proceeded to pour the gas into the aircraft's tank. While these two publicity stunts deserve mention, the first air-to-air refueling using a gravity-flow hose occurred in 1923. Earlier that year, the US Army Air Service had equipped two De Haviland DH-4Bs with inflight hoses. After installation, testing, and preparation, the Army Air Service was ready to put it to use, and on 27 June, one of the DH-4s flew a 6-hour and 38-minute flight that included two air refuelings. Testing continued through much of 1923 until 18 November, when the hose became entangled in the right wings of the two aircraft. Lieutenant P. T. Wagner, the pilot of the refueler, was killed in the accident.

Desert Storm had underscored the relevance of a 1990 initiative intended both to (1) enhance the efficiency of the tanker force during conventional combat and (2) standardize the refueling systems of U.S. fighter aircraft. This report focuses on additional actions that the Desert Storm experience suggest could further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of aerial refueling operations. Tables.

Book excerpt: The United States Air Force currently relies principally on boom-and- receptacle technology to conduct aerial-refueling operations for fixed-wing aircraft. With this approach, a single aircraft at a time may be refueled behind a tanker. An alternative concept, called multipoint aerial refueling, uses probe-and-drogue technology to enable more than one fighter aircraft to aerially refuel simultaneously from a tanker. Advocates of a transition to multipoint aerial refueling describe multipoint's benefits as follows: greater flexibility and interoperability of U.S. forces, and the possibility of budgetary savings resulting from the smaller tanker inventory that could be required. Several studies in recent years have addressed the efficacy of multipoint aerial refueling for fighter-employment operations. Not surprisingly, since each study used different analytic approaches and assumptions, the results of the studies have varied. I reviewed five of these studies to understand the reasons for the differences among them and to determine whether any general conclusions could be drawn about the desirability of equipping U.S. tanker aircraft with the multipoint aerial-refueling capability.
