Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radioactive Transformations In the year 1883 a legacy of eighty thousand dollars was left to the President and Fellows of Yale College in the city of New Haven, to be held in trust, as a gift from her children, in memory of their beloved and honored mother Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman. On this foundation Yale College was requested and directed to establish an annual course of lectures designed to illustrate the presence and providence, the wisdom and goodness of God, as manifested in the natural and moral world. These were to be designated as the Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman Memorial Lectures. It was the belief of the testator that any orderly presentation of the facts of nature or history contributed to the end of this foundation more effectively than any attempt to emphasize the elements of doctrine or of creed; and he therefore provided that lectures on dogmatic or polemical theology should be excluded from the scope of this foundation, and that the subjects should be selected rather from the domains of natural science and history, giving special prominence to astronomy, chemistry, geology, and anatomy. It was further directed that each annual course should be made the basis of a volume to form part of a series constituting a memorial to Mrs. Silliman. The memorial fund came into the possession of the Corporation of Yale University in the year 1902; and the present volume constitutes the third of the series of memorial lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radioactivity and Radioactive Substances: An Introduction to the Study of Radioactive Substances and Their Radiations I have read with pleasure this little book of my friend Dr. J. Chadwick. It is a clear and accurate account of radioactive phenomena written by one who has a first-hand knowledge of the facts. For the beginner, the treatment of the subject gains in clearness by using, as the author has done, the modern conceptions of atomic structure and by disregard of the historical order of discovery. To all those who are interested in the development of our knowledge of this fascinating subject I can strongly recommend this book as a simple, concise, and accurate statement of the main facts and theories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radioactive Substances and Their Radiations A collected account of radio-active phenomena entitled Radio activity. This was followed a year later by a revised and enlarged edition. In the seven years that have elapsed since the latter publication there has been a steady and rapid growth of our knowledge of the properties of the radiations from active sub stances, and of the remarkable series of transformations that occur in them. In the present work I have endeavoured to give an accurate and concise account of the whole subject as it stands to-day within the compass of a Single volume. A few pages from the earlier book have been utilised, but, otherwise, the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of the Radio-Elements Radioactivity has introduced into the science of chemistry a new conception. The radioactive elements are radioactive because they are in progress of spontaneous change. The chemistry of the radio-elements is concerned largely with the nature of the products of these changes, their isolation and separate identification. The property of radioactivity was discovered by M.Henri Becquerel Pin 1896 for compounds of the element uranium, which he found to be spontaneously emitting new kinds of radiation, very much allied to the X-rays in their general nature. Thus the new radiations pass to varying extent through all matter, quite independently of whether it is opaque or transparent to light. The new radiations, in addition to the properties possessed by light of acting on a photographic plate and of causing certain substances, like the platinocyanides, to fluoresce, resemble the X-rays also in "ionising" the air and other gases, rendering them, for the time being, partial conductors of electricity, and causing them, for example, to discharge a gold leaf electroscope. The pioneer on the chemical side was Mme. Curie, who, working in conjunction with her husband, the late M.Pierre Curie, made the following fundamental generalisation. Radioactivity is a property of the atom. It is not affected at all by the nature of the chemical combination in which the atom exists, nor by the physical conditions. Such properties are' action on photographic plates, power of producing beautiful scintillations and coloured phosphorescence with zinc blende and certain other minerals, power to bring about many chemical actions, continual and relatively considerable evolution of heat, and various beneficial therapeutic actions which have resulted from its application in medicine. We, must, therefore, study these radiations with exactness, and must consider their mode of produc tion. The substances producing them are known.
