Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Free Europe was first published in 1958. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. What is radio Free Europe? Where does it broadcast? Who runs it? What are its purposes? Although thousands of Americans are familiar with Radio Free Europe (many have contributed to its support through the Crusade for Freedom campaigns), few know enough about its background to answer these and similar questions. In this book a political scientist with first-hand knowledge gives a detailed account of the organization and development of this unique propaganda enterprise. Radio Free Europe was established as a private broadcasting project in 1949 by the Free Europe Committee, headed by Joseph C. Grew, as part of the Committee's program of broad, long-range assistance to democratic exiles from totalitarian countries. The operational headquarters are located at Munich, and the broadcasts are directed to the people of five satellite countries: Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, and Poland. Professor Holt tells how Radio Free Europe was established, outlines its basic policies and objectives, describes its organization, personnel, programming, and services, discusses transmission problems, and examines the effectiveness of the propaganda. He describes in detail the role of RFE in connection with the uprisings in Poland and Hungary and analyzes the charges that RFE stimulated the Hungarian revolt.

Book Synopsis Broadcasting Freedom by : Arch Puddington
Download or read book Broadcasting Freedom written by Arch Puddington and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among America's most unusual and successful weapons during the Cold War were Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. RFE-RL had its origins in a post-war America brimming with confidence and secure in its power. Unlike the Voice of America, which conveyed a distinctly American perspective on global events, RFE-RL served as surrogate home radio services and a vital alternative to the controlled, party-dominated domestic press in Eastern Europe. Over twenty stations featured programming tailored to individual countries. They reached millions of listeners ranging from industrial workers to dissident leaders such as Lech Walesa and Vaclav Havel. Broadcasting Freedom draws on rare archival material and offers a penetrating insider history of the radios that helped change the face of Europe. Arch Puddington reveals new information about the connections between RFE-RL and the CIA, which provided covert funding for the stations during the critical start-up years in the early 1950s. He relates in detail the efforts of Soviet and Eastern Bloc officials to thwart the stations; their tactics ranged from jamming attempts, assassinations of radio journalists, the infiltration of spies onto the radios' staffs, and the bombing of the radios' headquarters. Puddington addresses the controversies that engulfed the stations throughout the Cold War, most notably RFE broadcasts during the Hungarian Revolution that were described as inflammatory and irresponsible. He shows how RFE prevented the Communist authorities from establishing a monopoly on the dissemination of information in Poland and describes the crucial roles played by the stations as the Berlin Wall came down and the Soviet Union broke apart. Broadcasting Freedom is also a portrait of the Cold War in America. Puddington offers insights into the strategic thinking of the RFE-RL leadership and those in the highest circles of American government, including CIA directors, secretaries of state, and even presidents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to imagine a subject with more elusive data than this. The source and location of clandestine radio broadcasts are, by definition, secret. `White' stations openly identify themselves (such as Radio Free Europe), and `gray' stations are purportedly operated by dissident groups within a country, although actually they might be located in another nation; but `black' stations transmit broadcasts by one side disguised as broadcasts by another. . . . [This] is an extraordinary book. It belongs in every research library concerned with war and revolution and international communications. A valuable appendix lists known clandestine radio stateions, 1948-1985. Choice In this ambitious and impressive study two academic specialists in the field of political communication have endeavored to cover the history of such broadcasts from the beginnings in the 1930s through the use of psychological warfare and deception of World War II to the manifold practice of `gray' and `black' propaganda that had punctuated the conflict of the postwar period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the Soviet bloc, the struggle against foreign radio was one of the principal fronts in the Cold War. Poland's War on Radio Free Europe, 1950-1989 tells how Poland conducted this fight, a key part of the wider effort "to control the flow of information and ideas, which largely determined the Communist regimes' ability to command their societies and to meet their political and ideological goals, " according to Paweł Machcewicz. This is the first book in English to use the unique documents of Communist foreign intelligence operations so widely, and it also employs propaganda materials and personal interviews with Radio Free Europe people and with party and security functionaries. The English translation reflects further discoveries of documentation since the original publication in Polish in 2007." -- Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Cold War Social Science by : Mark Solovey
Download or read book Cold War Social Science written by Mark Solovey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the social sciences became entangled with the global Cold War. While duly recognizing the realities of nation states, national power, and national aspirations, the studies gathered here open up new lines of transnational investigation. Considering developments in a wide array of fields – anthropology, development studies, economics, education, political science, psychology, science studies, and sociology – that involved the movement of people, projects, funding, and ideas across diverse national contexts, this volume pushes scholars to rethink certain fundamental points about how we should understand – and thus how we should study – Cold War social science itself.
Book Synopsis Digital Radio in Europe by : Brian O'Neill
Download or read book Digital Radio in Europe written by Brian O'Neill and published by Intellect (UK). This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio, the oldest form of electronic broadcasting, has been described as the last medium to go digital. Yet developments have been underway for over twenty years to create new technologies and digital platforms for the transmission of radio in digital form. O'Neill presents detailed studies of the development of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), successes and failures in digital radio implementation, and future scenarios for radio in a fully converged media environment. Essays address the fact that radio now stands at a crossroads in its development, and question whether it has a viable future or whether it will converge with other forms of multimedia and audiovisual media services.
