Book Synopsis The Electronic Transitions of Molecular Oxygen by : Mikkel Bregnhøj
Download or read book The Electronic Transitions of Molecular Oxygen written by Mikkel Bregnhøj and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the fundamentals and the state of the art of the photophysics of molecular oxygen. The author examines optical transitions between the lowest-lying electronic states in molecular oxygen and how these transitions respond to perturbation, either from an organic molecule or from the plasmon field of a metal nanoparticle. We live on a planet filled with light and oxygen. The interaction between these two components forms the basis of excited state chemistry spanning the fields of synthetic organic chemistry, materials chemistry, molecular biology, and photodynamic treatment of cancer. Still, the fundamental ways in which oxygen is affected by light is an active subject of research and is continually being developed and rationalized. In this book, readers will learn that singlet oxygen, the excited state of oxygen that exhibits unique chemical reactivity, can be selectively made via direct optical excitation of oxygen in a sensitizer-free system. Readers will also discover that this approach can perturb living cells differently depending on the singlet oxygen “dose”.

This book was released on 2010-07-03 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an interdisciplinary treatise on the theoretical approach to solvation problems. It describes the essential details of the theoretical methods and places them into the context of modern applications, and hence is of broad interest to theoreticians and experimentalists. The assembly of these modern methods and applications into one volume is a unique contribution to date and gives a broad and ample description of the field in its present stage of development.
Book Synopsis Physical and Chemical Mechanisms in Molecular Radiation Biology by : William A. Glass
Download or read book Physical and Chemical Mechanisms in Molecular Radiation Biology written by William A. Glass and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental understanding of the production of biological effects by ionizing radiation may well be one of the most important scientific objectives of mankind; such understanding could lead to the effective and safe utilization of the nuclear energy option. In addition, this knowledge will be of immense value in such diverse fields as radiation therapy and diagnosis and in the space program. To achieve the above stated objective, the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors embarked upon a fundamental interdisciplinary research program some 35 years ago. A critical component of this program is the Radiological and Chemical Physics Program (RCPP). When the RCPP was established, there was very little basic knowledge in the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology that could be directly applied to understanding the effects of radiation on biological systems. Progress of the RCPP program in its first 15 years was documented in the proceedings of a conference held at Airlie, Virginia, in 1972. At this conference, it was clear that considerable progr:ess had been made in research on the physical and chemical processes in well-characterized systems that could be used to understand biological effects. During this period of time, most physical knowledge was obtained for the gas phase because the technology and instru mentation had not progressed to the point that measurements could be made in liquids more characteristic of biological materials.

Book Synopsis Radiation Induced Molecular Phenomena in Nucleic Acids by : Manoj Shukla
Download or read book Radiation Induced Molecular Phenomena in Nucleic Acids written by Manoj Shukla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-08 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis of UV-radiation and low energy electron induced phenomena in nucleic acid bases (NABs) and base assemblies are presented in this book. NABs are highly photostable; the absorbed energy is dissipated in the form of ultrafast nonradiative decay. This book highlights the possible mechanisms of these phenomena which is important for all living species and discusses technical challenges in exploration of these processes.

Book Synopsis Environmental and Technological Aspects of Redox Processes by : Duca, Gheorghe
Download or read book Environmental and Technological Aspects of Redox Processes written by Duca, Gheorghe and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental and Technological Aspects of Redox Processes is a comprehensive guide to understanding the natural process of electrochemical oxidation/reduction and adsorption action in water treatment technology. The book examines the complexities of redox signaling at a cellular level and how it influences a wide range of biological processes, such as immune function, tissue repair, and cell development. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this book provides valuable insights and strategies for preventing the negative effects caused by oxidants, such as damage to living cells, DNA, proteins, and lipids. Through extensive research on electronic structure, thermodynamics, kinetics, and catalysis of the redox reactions, this book is poised to contribute to an extensive body of new knowledge regarding the essence of the redox processes, the revelation and theoretical justification of key mechanisms, and the discovery of new aspects of methods to control the redox reactions. This will have a major impact on the quality of life, human health, food quality, as well as the state of the environment, especially for the sources of clean water, which continue to deplete at a rapid rate. This book is a valuable resource for professionals and researchers in materials science, materials engineering, chemical engineering, ecological chemistry, and water professionals, as well as individuals working in related disciplines such as environment, chemistry, toxicology, administrative sciences and management, education, sociology, and subjects related to public policies and decision support. Moreover, the book provides insights and support to executives concerned with the management of expertise, knowledge, information, and policy development in different types of science and educational communities.
