Book excerpt: This investigation considers a non-linear technique for extracting natural resonances from transient electromagnetic scattering responses of radar targets. These natural resonances represent the complex poles of the target's transfer function in the Laplace transform s-plane. The advantage of their use in identification is their dependence only upon the geometry and composition of the target and not upon the aspect and polarization of the incident signal. Based on recent theoretical research, a new signal model has been developed for describing the form of the transient scattering response. This form precludes the optimal use of previous methods for natural resonance extraction based on Prony's algorithm. In this effort, a modified least-squares approach is taken which can accommodate the actual form of the transient signal. The algorithm is tested using simulated signals with various noise levels and conclusions are drawn concerning the viability of the method. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report summarizes research during the period July 1, 1974 to June 30, 1975 under the contract on two technical objectives of the Air Force: improved detection and discrimination of radar targets and reduction of nonspecular scattering by wing geometries. The report is contained in two main sections. The first section outlines methods for deducing the complex natural resonances of arbitrary radar targets and the use of these resonances via predictor-correlator processing for detection and discrimination. Illustrative examples of both natural resonance extraction and discrimination are given for aircraft targets. The second section of the report summarizes the analysis of a loaded two-dimensional wind model for horizontal polarization. Hybrid techniques combining moment methods and the geometrical theory of diffraction are used and the loading consists of surface impedance patches. Examples of reduction of the nonspecular cross section are given. A 'folded dipole' like antenna is used as an alternate mechanism for controlling edge diffracted fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report extends and formalizes the concept of using the complex natural resonances of objects as a tool in radar target discrimination. The complex natural resonances which characterize an object are found to be excitation invariant; i.e., the positions of the resonances in the complex frequency plane do not shift as the object is viewed along different incident directions or with different polarizations, which permit a minimum amount of data to be used in object discrimination. Once the dominant (low frequency or long time) natural resonances have been obtained for those objects of interest, a predictor-correlator type of processing can be applied to multi-frequency radar scattering data from an unknown target. It can be established from which of the known objects the scattering most likely originated. This done on the basis of correlations among the scattering and the various sets of natural resonances; the set of natural resonances showing the highest correlation identifies the most probable target.

Book excerpt: It has been shown that extraction of complex natural resonances and residues from exact transient responses via Prony's method is both efficient and accurate. However, in the art of radar interrogation the exact transient response is difficult to obtain and the authors must be content with an approximate one. Knowing the complex natural resonances of objects is essential to one type of radar target discrimination. In this paper the authors consider the use of Prony's method in extracting complex natural resonances from approximate backscattered ramp responses of radar targets. A ramp waveform is used in radar target discrimination because a good approximation to the time domain response can be obtained with only a few harmonically related frequency domain responses via Fourier synthesis. By applying Prony's method to this approximate ramp response, a few dominant resonances which are close to the origin of the complex frequency plane can be extracted. This is quite encouraging because for the purpose of radar target discrimination only a few dominant modes are needed. Objects considered are prolate spheroids, simple wire aircraft models and some realistic aircraft models. The accuracy of this method is found to be good when compared to the results obtained by other techniques.

The general plan of the program consists in a study of resonances of targets of simple shape (e.g., sphere) but complex composition (e.g., dielectric coating of conductors) during the first year, followed by simple conducting targets and comparison with parallel measurements performed at NSWC Dahlgren in the second year, with further extension to conductors of more complex shapes, using Waterman's methods, later on. The emphasis of our study is two-fold, namely: (1) to study ways how the resonance structure of the radar echo can be used for identifying the nature of the target (the 'inverse scattering problem'); and (2) to obtain a physical understanding of the phenomena that cause the resonances, and how they manifest themselves in both steady-state and pulsed echoes. Such an understanding, in preference to a more mechanical use of the singularity expansion method, will provide us with the true capability of mastering the target discrimination problem.

The basis of the system is the aspect and excitation independent property of electromagnetic scattering from a conducting body. Such a system consists of two components: pole extraction and annihilation filtering. The algorithms investigated here for these purposes are the Cadzow-Solomon pole extraction algorithm and the K-Pulse annihilation filter. Additionally, an aspect-dependent annihilation filter based on an inverse ARMA model is introduced. The procedures are applied to noise polluted synthetic data, as well as scattering data collected for a thin-wire and silver coated 1/72 scale model aircraft.

This method characterizes subsurface radar targets by their complex natural resonances which are extracted directly from their backscattered timedomain waveforms. The difference equation coefficients associated with the complex resonances are then used in the predictor-correlator for target identification. Both the characterization and identification processes are extensively tested with real radar measurements and found to yield practical target identification performance. The target identification process is simple and involves only simple algebraic operations. Based on the identification process, a first-generation microcomputer identification radar system is implemented for target identification in real time. This radar system is found to yield practical identification performance.

Book excerpt: Radar-based imaging of aircraft targets is a topic that continues to attract a lot of attention, particularly since these imaging methods have been recognized to be the foundation of any successful all-weather non-cooperative target identification technique. Traditional books in this area look at the topic from a radar engineering point of view. Consequently, the basic issues associated with model error and image interpretation are usually not addressed in any substantive fashion. Moreover, applied mathematicians frequently find it difficult to read the radar engineering literature because it is jargon-laden and device specific, meaning that the skills most applicable to the problem's solution are rarely applied. Enabling an understanding of the subject and its current mathematical research issues, Radar Imaging of Airborne Targets: A Primer for Applied Mathematicians and Physicists presents the issues and techniques associated with radar imaging from a mathematical point of view rather than from an instrumentation perspective. The book concentrates on scattering issues, the inverse scattering problem, and the approximations that are usually made by practical algorithm developers. The author also explains the consequences of these approximations to the resultant radar image and its interpretation, and examines methods for reducing model-based error.

Book excerpt: This report presents a review of the radar target identification problem with primary emphasis on practical solutions as opposed to abstract inverse scattering formalisms. A time domain viewpoint is stressed throughout because of its compactness, ease of visualization and diagnostic potential and because it is a unifying tool for various electromagnetic approximations. A small finite set of excitation invariant target descriptors, the coefficients of a linear, homogeneous difference equation, or equivalently the complex natural resonances, are justified as a discrimination tool. A prediction-correlation method for using these coefficients in identification is demonstrated. It is shown that substructure features of the targets, in this caes vertical and horizontal stabilizers of aircraft, possibly can be used as a discrimination feature and that the required interrogating radar signal spectrum for this case is significantly higher than that required for previous discrimination schemes using excitation invariant parameters. In this specific case, however, the target parameters do not have a simple physical interpretation. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report discusses progress being made in research on resonant region radar target identification. Topics studied include the use of Complex Natural Resonances, syntactic-classifier-based identification techniques, optimization criteria for feature selection, and target substructure studies. Under the topic of Complex Natural Resonances (CNR), classification probability results using the Lai model are shown for the case of two commercial aircraft. Predictor-correlator results are also shown for a set of three land vehicles. In the case of syntactic target identification, an analysis of the performance of three different pattern representation schemes has been begun. Level and octant crossing examples have been used with the OSU/ESL data base to derive a set of syntactic primitives. Studies are given showing the classification performance for the three types of primitives derived here. This area of research has also begun the development of a feature vector optimization scheme based on various cost functions. Results are given. The study of substructure identification based on transient waveforms and polarimetric color images has also begun to produce results. Some preliminary conclusions are given in Chapter V on this topic. Keywords: Algorithms; Radar cross sections.

This scheme consists of synthesizing an aspect-independent waveform for the incident radar signal which excites an arbitrarily oriented target in such a way that the return radar signal from the target contains only a single natural resonance mode of the target in the late-time period. When the synthesized incident radar signal for exciting a particular natural mode of a known, preselected target is applied to a wrong target, the return radar signal will be significantly different from that of the expected natural mode, thus, the wrong target can be sensitively discriminated. The selection of an optimum pulse duration of the required incident signal for the purpose of shaping its waveform is also studied. Three kinds of targets, an arbitrarily oriented thin wire, a sphere and a normally oriented infinite cylinder, have been investigated. The cases of an arbitrarily oriented wire and a sphere have been completed and the results are reported in Parts 1 and 2. The case of infinite cylinder will be completed shortly and incomplete results of this case are outlined in Part 3. (Author).
