Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes a method for rapidly evaluating the simulated radar backscatter signatures of B-spline target models moving relative to a source/receiver. A geometric optics approach is used to estimate the radar return from a complex target surface described by a bicubic B-spline mesh. The method exploits the second-order continuity of bicubic B-spline surfaces to reduce the problem of finding all the specular points associated with each new trajectory position to that of tracking the motion of existing points. In particular, it is shown that the locations of the annihilations and creations of specular paths may be predicted for an entire trajectory, eliminating the need to search the whole surface for specular points as the target moves in relation to the source/receiver. The method is shown to work for the multiple-bounce case as well. The report contains several recommendations for further exploitation of the properties of B-spline surfaces for the tracking of specular points. (fr).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Doppler Effect can be thought of as the change in frequency of a wave for an observer moving relative to the source of the wave. In radar, it is used to measure the velocity of detected objects. This highly practical resource provides thorough working knowledge of the micro-Doppler effect in radar, including its principles, applications and implementation with MATLAB codes. The book presents code for simulating radar backscattering from targets with various motions, generating micro-Doppler signatures, and analyzing the characteristics of targets. In this title, professionals will find detailed descriptions of the physics and mathematics of the Doppler and micro-Doppler effect. The book provides a wide range of clear examples, including an oscillating pendulum, a spinning and precession heavy top, rotating rotor blades of a helicopter, rotating wind-turbine blades, a person walking with swinging arms and legs, a flying bird, and movements of quadruped animals.

Book excerpt: The objective is to develop theoretical radar backscatter models for targets needed for radar simulation. In particular, vegetation covered terrain has been given special attention. The models should provide polarization, frequency and angular variations of the radar backscattering coefficient which is an input parameter to the equation governing the graytone level of radar images. Theoretically, scattering from a natural terrain such as a vegetation canopy over soil comes from three processes: (a) volume scattering from the vegetation, (b) surface scattering from the underlying soil and (c) combined volume and surface scattering due to scattered waves which have interacted with both soil and vegetation before returning to radar. Results summarized in this report deal mainly with improvement and new findings in (a) and (b); an attempt to account for (c) has been carried out for an emission model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a prominent expert in the field, this updated and expanded second edition of an Artech House classic includes the most recent breakthroughs in vital sign and gender recognition via micro-radar, as well as covering basic principles of Doppler effect and micro-Doppler effect and describing basic applications of micro-Doppler signatures in radar. The book presents detailed procedures about how to generate and analyze micro-Doppler signatures from radar signals. Readers will learn how to model and animate an object (such as human, spinning top, rotating rotor blades) with movement, simulation of radar returns from the object, and generating micro-Doppler signature. The book includes coverage of the Google project “Soli”, which demonstrated the use of radar micro-Doppler effect to sense and recognize micro motions of human hand gesture for controlling devices. It also discusses noncontact detection of human vital sign (micro motions of breathing and heart beating) using radar, another important application of radar micro-Doppler sensors. Detailed MATLAB source codes for simulation of radar backscattering from targets with various motions are provided, along with source codes for generating micro-Doppler signatures and analyzing characteristics of targets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource covers basic concepts and modeling examples for the three “pillars” of EW: Electronic Attack (EA) systems, Electronic Protection (EP) techniques, and Electronic Support (ES). It develops techniques for the modeling and simulation (M&S) of modern radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems and reviews radar principles, including the radar equation. M&S techniques are introduced, and example models developed in MATLAB and Simulink are presented and discussed in detail. These individual models are combined to create a full end-to-end engineering engagement simulation between a pulse-Doppler radar and a target. The radar-target engagement model is extended to include jamming models and is used to illustrate the interaction between radar and jamming signals and the impact on radar detection and tracking. In addition, several classic EA techniques are introduced and modeled, and the effects on radar performance are explored. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and managers who are involved in the design, development, or testing of radar and EW systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the M&S techniques that are used in these systems, and the book's many examples and case studies provide a solid foundation for understanding how these techniques can be applied in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A digital computer program is described which simulates the radar-target engagement providing a representation of the detection, acquisition, and tracking processes. The program is arranged as a time simulation of the engagement between a radar and target, taking into account the detailed characteristics of the target cross section, radar and target motion throughout the engagement, surface clutter, atmospheric attenuation, and radar losses. In the output the program provides the user with target detection probabilities in the presence of surface clutter as well as receiver noise, radar search and track accuracies, signal-to-noise ratios, target characteristics vs time, angular and range rates, etc. The input requirements to the program are: (1) a deck of parameter cards describing the radar parameters, the clutter environment, and the initial radar-target geometry, (2) a deck of cards describing the target motion throughout the engagement, and (3) a deck of cards describing the target's cross section vs aspect angle. Many simplifications to the inputs are allowed for studying and isolating various parts of the radar problem. (Author).
