Radar, or microwave, imaging can be used for this purpose. The book provides an overview of the field and explains why a unified approach based on wave field processing techniques, including holographic and tomographic approaches, is necessary in high resolution radar design. It contains discussion of new areas in imaging radar theory, holographic radar, the questions of estimation and improving radar image quality, and finally various practical applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radar, Sonar, and Holography: An Introduction provides an introduction to the technology of radar and sonar. Because the new science of holography is affecting both these fields quite strongly, the book includes an explanation of the fundamental principles underlying this new art (including the subjects of wave coherence, interference, and diffraction) and of the hologram process itself. Finally, numerous examples are discussed which show how holography is providing new horizons to radar and sonar systems. The book thus also provides a simple approach to the new technology of holography. The discussions clarify the basic difference that exist between photography and holography, on the one hand, and between standard sonar and radar, on the other; and the hologram versions of these two technologies. The book should be useful as a supplementary reading assignment to early college students in science and engineering, and also to senior high students having a bent for science and engineering.

Book excerpt: A guide to the applications of holographic techniques for microwave and millimeter wave imaging Real-Time Three-Dimensional Imaging of Dielectric Bodies Using Microwave/Millimeter Wave Holography offers an authoritative guide to the field of microwave holography for the specific application of imaging dielectric bodies. The authors—noted experts on the topic—review the early works in the area of optical and microwave holographic imaging and explore recent advances of the microwave and millimeter wave imaging techniques. These techniques are based on the measurement of both magnitude and phase over an aperture and then implementing digital image reconstruction. The book presents developments in the microwave holographic techniques for near-field imaging applications such as biomedical imaging and non-destructive testing of materials. The authors also examine novel holographic techniques to gain super-resolution or quantitative images. The book also includes a discussion of the capabilities and limitations of holographic reconstruction techniques and provides recommendations for overcoming many of the limitations. This important book: • Describes the evolution of wide-band microwave holography techniques from synthetic aperture radar principles • Explores two major approaches to near-field microwave holography: Using the incident field and Green's function information and using point-spread function of the imaging system • Introduces the "diffraction limit" in the resolution for techniques that are based on the Born approximation, and provides techniques to overcome this limit Written for students and research associates in microwave and millimeter wave engineering, Real-Time Three-Dimensional Imaging of Dielectric Bodies Using Microwave/Millimeter Wave Holography reviews microwave and millimeter-wave imaging techniques based on the holographic principles and provides information on the most current developments.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors provide an inclusive and expansive vision of how radar will serve our increasingly efficiency- and security-conscious world. They do this by employing the model of holographic and ubiquitous radar (HUR) in which staring arrays are used such that the whole of a surveillance volume is continuously interrogated, with complex, ubiquitous signal data stored and analysed. This is essential reading for radar academics, military capability managers, senior industry engineers and engineering managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, the range of technologies with the potential to threaten the security of U.S. military forces is extremely broad. These include developments in explosive materials, sensors, control systems, robotics, satellite systems, and computing power, to name just a few. Such technologies have not only enhanced the capabilities of U.S. military forces, but also offer enhanced offensive capabilities to potential adversaries - either directly through the development of more sophisticated weapons, or more indirectly through opportunities for interrupting the function of defensive U.S. military systems. Passive and active electro-optical (EO) sensing technologies are prime examples. Laser Radar considers the potential of active EO technologies to create surprise; i.e., systems that use a source of visible or infrared light to interrogate a target in combination with sensitive detectors and processors to analyze the returned light. The addition of an interrogating light source to the system adds rich new phenomenologies that enable new capabilities to be explored. This report evaluates the fundamental, physical limits to active EO sensor technologies with potential military utility; identifies key technologies that may help overcome the impediments within a 5-10 year timeframe; considers the pros and cons of implementing each existing or emerging technology; and evaluates the potential uses of active EO sensing technologies, including 3D mapping and multi-discriminate laser radar technologies.

The symposium was organized by the ultrasonics research group of Tohoku University and the IEEE ijFFC Society, Tokyo Chapter. Of the 128 papers submitted, 88 were presented during the symposium, which comprised 144 researchers from 13 countries. This volume contains 81 papers as the record of the symposium and is clas sified into the following sections: (1) Acoustic Microscopy and its Applications; (2) Non-Destructive Evaluation; (3) Signal Processing of Images; (4) Acoustic Measurements and Physical Acoustics; (5) Medical Ultrasonic Diagnostics; (6) Acoustic Sensors; (7) Acoustic Holography and Tomography; (8) Seismic Exploration; and (9) Imaging Instrumentation and Other Techniques. A number of the papers submitted were associated with medical ultrasonic diagnostics and acoustic microscopy, reflecting a major activity in acousti cal imaging at Tohoku University. Accordingly, two invited talks were focused on this area: acoustic microscopy by Dr. G. A. D. Briggs of the University of Oxford and medical ultrasonics by Prof. M. Tanaka of Tohoku University. In light of the history of research in this field at our university, we are delighted to have had the opportunity to host the 17th symposium.
