Book excerpt: This book, THE EFFECTS OF RADAR ON THE HUMAN BODY (RM-TR-62-1) was published by the Department of Defense in 1962 and it describes how much damage Radio Frequency (RF) and Microwave (MW) radiation can do to the human body and indicates how much power is needed to incapacitate or even kill an individual. I believe this is a timely subject based on recent events such as the attacks on U.S. diplomats. There has been some speculation in the media that RF or microwaves may have caused the damage, however no one knows for sure. What I do know is that RF and microwave radiation can be harmful so they should be studied and the literature needs to be updated. Personally, I don't use a wireless router at home because of the possibility of genetic damage or tumors. The only copy I could find of this document was in pretty bad shape so I went ahead and scanned it and compared the scanned text with the original. Took several days to get it right. There were a few words that were totally obliterated, but that was the best copy available. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). Some documents found on the web are missing some pages or the image quality is so poor, they are difficult to read. We look over each document carefully and replace poor quality images by going back to the original source document. We proof each document to make sure it's all there - including all changes. If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com This book includes original commentary which is copyright material. Note that government documents are in the public domain. We print these large documents as a service so you don't have to. The books are compact, tightly-bound, full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. https: //usgovpub.com

Book excerpt: A method is presented for the determination of radar frequency radiation power densities that the PAVE PAWS radar system could produce in its air and ground environment. The effort was prompted by the concern of the people in the vicinity of OTIS AFB MA and BEALE AFB CA about the possible radar frequency radiation hazard of the PAVE PAWS radar. The method is based on the following main assumptions that: (a) the total field can be computed as the vector summation of the individual fields due to each antenna element; (b) the individual field can be calculated using distances for which the field point is in the far field of the antenna element. An RFR computer program was coded for the RADC HE 6180 digital computer and exercised to calculate the radiation levels in the air and ground space for the present baseline and the possible Six DB and 10 DB growth systems of the PAVE PAWS radar system at OTIS AFB MA. The average radiation levels due to the surveillance fence were computed for three regions: in the air space in front of the radar, at the radar hazard fence at OTIS AFB MA and at representative ground points in the OTIS AFB vicinity. It was concluded that the radar frequency radiation of PAVE PAWS does not present a hazard to personnel provided there is no entry to the air hazard zone or to the area within the hazard fence. The method developed offers a cost effective way to determine radiation levels from a phased array radar especially in the near field and transition regions.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several studies have linked radiofrequency (RF) fields to biological effects in certain cells and these have raised concerns among the public and health organizations. Safety of the workers who are occupationally exposed to this type of radiation is a major concern because they would be the ones most exposed to RFR. This study aims to determine and analyze occupational exposure levels of radio-frequency (RF) radiation from radar facilities in Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) and to determine whether the RF exposure levels are within the allowed reference levels set by the CDRRHR of the Department of Health. The measurement was carried out with the use of the NARDA selective radiation meter SRM-3000. Exposure levels from near field, far field, and leakage regions were measured. For the far-field region the highest measured power density levels were measured at a distance of 2370 m from the radar tower for both PSR and SSR with values of 4.28 x10-3 W/m2 (2825 MHz), 4.07 x10-3 W/m2 (2775 MHz), and 2.941 x10-4 W/m2 (1030 MHz). In the near-field region the highest were measured at a distance of 3 m from the radar antenna with E-and H-field strengths of 1.395 V/m and 3.701 x10-3 A/m at 2825 MHz and 1.437 V/m and 3.812 x10-3 A/m at 2775 MHz for PSR. For SSR the highest E-and H-field strengths recorded were at a distance of 73 m with values of 0.3549 V/m and 9.415 x10-4 A/m. Lastly for leakage radiation the highest recorded E-and H- field strengths for PSR are 3.626 V/m and 9.620 x10-3 A/m for 2825 MHz and 2.755 V/m and 7.307 x10-3 A/m for 2775 MHz which were measured at the first waveguide joint to the rotor of the radar antenna. For SSR the highest E-and H- field strength recorded are 0.307 V/m and 9.04 x10-4 A/m which were measured in the 3rd floor of the radar tower. Thus, occupational RFR exposure levels from the radar device in the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport are within allowable level and do not pose any hazard to the health of radar workers in DMIA with regards to the currently known biological effects of radiofrequency radiation.

Book excerpt: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has sponsored research supporting development of personnel safety standards for exposure to Radio Frequency Radiation (RFR) for over a quarter century. NATO previously recognized that one of the most important tools used in the RFR effects research laboratory is accurate dosimetry when it supported a NATO Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) on Advances in Biological Effects and Dosimetry of Low Energy Electromagnetic Fields held in 1981, in Erice, Sicily. That meeting resulted in a NATO ASI publication; Biological Effects and Dosimetry of l Non-ionizing Radiation: Radiofrequency and Microwave Energies . The most recent NATO sponsored program on RFR was an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Developing a New Standardization Agreement (STANAG) for Radio frequency Radiation" held May 1993, at the Pratica di Mare Italian Air Force Base, Pomezia (Rome) Italy. That ARW produced an ASI proceedings, published in 1995: Radio frequency Radiation Standards, Biological Effects, Dosimetry, Epidemiology, and Public Health Policy2. The Rome ARW and the Proceedings served as a springboard to the much needed revision of the NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2345 MED "Evaluation and Control of Personnel Exposure to Radio Frequency Fields - 3 kHz to 300 GHz,,3, which was subsequently promulgated in October 1998. One of the published recommendations developed by the Rome ARW was to hold this second ARW focusing on dosimetry and measurements.

Book excerpt: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has sponsored research and personnel safety standards development for exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation (RFR) for over twenty years. The Aerospace Medical Panel of the Advisory Group For Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD) sponsored Lecture Series No. 78 Radiation Hazards,! in 1975, in the Netherlands, Germany, and Norway, on the subject of Radiation Hazards to provide a review and critical analysis of the available information and concepts. In the same year, Research Study Group 2 on Protection of Personnel Against Non-Ionizing Electromagnetic Radiation (Panel VIIl of AC/243 Defence Research Group, NATO) proposed a revision to Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2345. The intent of the proposal was to revise the ST ANAG to incorporate frequency-dependent-RFR safety guidelines. These changes are documented in the NATO STANAG 2345 (MED), Control and Recording of Personnel Exposure to Radiofrequency Radiation,2 promulgated in 1979. Research Study Group 2 (RSG2) of NATO Defense Research Group Panel VIII (AC1243) was organized, in 1981, to study and contribute technical information concerning the protection of military personnel from the effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation. A workshop at the Royal Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, U. K. was held to develop and/or compile sufficient knowledge on the long-term effects of pulsed RFR to maintain safe procedures and to minimize unnecessary operational constraints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of 156th TAC Clinic Bioenvironmental Engineer, AFOEHL personnel surveyed radio frequency radiation (RFR) hazards from the AN/TPS-43E transportable radar at the 141st Tactical Control Squadron, Ramey PR. During the survey, final installation checks were being performed on a new AN/FPS-93 radar, so a RFR hazard survey was performed on that unit as well. Measurements showed no hazard from either radar while the antennas are rotating. The AN/TPS-43E is mechanically interlocked so it will not radiate while the antenna is stopped. Operating instructions should specify immediate deactivation of the radar transmitter in case of interlock failure. The AN/FPS-93 will produce a hazard if the transmitter is operated while the antenna is stopped. The hazardous area is along the beam axis and is only accessible by persons climbing on the interior or exterior of the radome, or on the antenna structure itself. The unit Radiation Safety Officer should be notified when individuals are working on or in the radome to assure that they are not exposed to the direct beam of the radar. In the future, an AN/FPS-6 radar will be installed at the site. A theoretical evaluation is included which should be verified by direct measurement when operational.

Book excerpt: This book treats the phenomena associated with the propagation of short radio waves between terminal points, whether they be the radar antenna serving a dual purpose or the antennas of a communications system. The intention is to present a summary of the state of knowledge in the microwave propagation field at the close of the war. There has been no attempt to produce either a handbook or textbook, but only an interim report on a rapidly changing subject. An attempt has been made to survey all relevant information that was available, from whatever source, and to summarise as much of it as was feasible.
