Book Synopsis Cunningham Sports Cars by : Karl Ludvigsen
Download or read book Cunningham Sports Cars written by Karl Ludvigsen and published by Enthusiast Books. This book was released on 2003-11-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time magazine cover hero and Americas Cup yachtsman Briggs Cunningham cut a swathe through the post-war sports-racing scene with his magnificent Cunningham sports cars. He burst into view in 1951 with his Chrysler-powered C-2 sports-racers and in 1952 launched the production C-3, a Vignale-bodied car built as both a coupe and cabriolet. Some two dozen were made. The C-4R was his 1952 racer, still Chrysler-powered, which performed well at Le Mans and with Phil Walters and John Fitch was all but unbeatable in American racing. Radical with its solid-axle front end and colossal drum brakes, the C-5R of 1953 was a challenger to the Jaguars at Le Mans. In 1954 Cunningham raced a much-modified Ferrari with water-cooled brakes and in 1955 introduced his C-6R, beautifully engineered by Briggs Weaver and Offenhauser powered. Fabulous unpublished pictures from the Ludvigsen Library show these great cars on the track and at rest. They carried the American flag at home and abroad with style and panache.

Book excerpt: In Head to Head, award-winning writer Lenny Shulman offers highlights from the best interviews he has conducted throughout his twenty-year career covering Thoroughbred horse racing. It was to Shulman that Helen "Penny" Chenery, owner of Secretariat, publicly revealed for the first time the mistakes she made with her superstar colt. Arthur Hancock III shared with him his feelings of being banished from his family's Claiborne Farm, and his pride in succeeding on his own with the great Sunday Silence. Owner Paul Reddam poured out his hopes and fears to Shulman in the hour before realizing his dream of winning the Kentucky Derby with I'll Have Another. Shulman takes readers behind the scenes with industry legends, owners, trainers, veterinarians, and celebrities -- touching on some of the greatest horses and greatest races the sport has ever seen. This engaging book serves as an important oral history of Thoroughbred horse racing as well as a guide for new generations of enthusiasts who are interested in learning from some of the sport's most successful luminaries.

Book excerpt: Finding the Groove features interviews with 27 leading drivers of the era: everyone from Richard Petty to Mario Andretti to Mark Donahue. Three were drag racers: Don Garlits, then the number one driver in the top fuel division; Don Prudhomme, who was equally dominant in funny cars; and Malcolm Garrett, a street racer from my hometown of Michigan City, Indiana. Malcolm never achieved the level of drag racing fame as Garlits or Prudhomme, but years later, Malcolm switched sports, serving as corner man for heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. In each chapter of Finding the Groove, I ask the driver: "How do you go fast around a racetrack?" This book features their answers. Some drivers understood their sport better than others, or at least had the ability to communicate their understanding better.
