Book Synopsis American Mestizos, The Philippines, and the Malleability of Race by : Nicholas Trajano Molnar
Download or read book American Mestizos, The Philippines, and the Malleability of Race written by Nicholas Trajano Molnar and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American mestizos, a group that emerged in the Philippines after it was colonized by the United States, became a serious social concern for expatriate Americans and Filipino nationalists far disproportionate to their actual size, confounding observers who debated where they fit into the racial schema of the island nation. Across the Pacific, these same mestizos were racialized in a way that characterized them as a asset to the United States, opening up the possibility of their assimilation to American society during a period characterized by immigration restriction and fears of miscegenation. Drawing upon Philippine and American archives, Nicholas Trajano Molnar documents the imposed and self-ascribed racializations of the American mestizos, demonstrating that the boundaries of their racial identity shifted across time and space with no single identity coalescing.

CHAPTER IX A Classification Of Filipino Eabs THE cosmopolitan population of Manila affords abundant material for the study of ears of all kinds. Here, if anywhere in the world, all races and many types of mankind are represented; the white, the yellow, the red, the brown, and the black. I had previously observed ears in America and Europe for several years, and after my arrival in the Philippines, in 1907, I gave particular attention to the ears of the Filipinos and the other inhabitants of these islands. The study of Filipino ears began by a close inspection and sketching of ears, on the streets leading into Manila, including the suburbs as well as the city proper, in the Assembly, and among other collections of Filipinos, such as the prisoners of Bilibid, where the criminals from all parts of the Philippines are incarcerated. Following this I made a more detailed study of the ears of the bodies received at Malecon Morgue, examined critically the ears of the people of the town of Taytay, and the FIG. 19--Types of Filipino ears. The Cro-Magnon is the Iberian type D and the Iberian in the central picture is the type C. ears of the inland tribes of the Philippines, the last largely by means of.photographs. Not having any preconceived ideas of the types of Filipino ears, I was led to select the European types with which I was familiar as the basis on which to begin my observations. I was surprised to find that the ears of Filipinos resemble those of Europeans, although the types at first selected were only the most general. The first 844 Filipinos examined were assigned to the groups as follows: Ears Of Adult Male Filipinos Long (Northern and Cro-Magnon) 345 Oval, shelf, no lobule (Alpine or French) 86 Round, flaring 84 No lobule 122 Others...

Book Synopsis The Palgrave International Handbook of Mixed Racial and Ethnic Classification by : Zarine L. Rocha
Download or read book The Palgrave International Handbook of Mixed Racial and Ethnic Classification written by Zarine L. Rocha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a global study of the classification of mixed race and ethnicity at the state level, bringing together a diverse range of country case studies from around the world. The classification of race and ethnicity by the state is a common way to organize and make sense of populations in many countries, from the national census and birth and death records, to identity cards and household surveys. As populations have grown, diversified, and become increasingly transnational and mobile, single and mutually exclusive categories struggle to adequately capture the complexity of identities and heritages in multicultural societies. State motivations for classification vary widely, and have shifted over time, ranging from subjugation and exclusion to remediation and addressing inequalities. The chapters in this handbook illustrate how differing histories and contemporary realities have led states to count and classify mixedness in different ways, for different reasons. This collection will serve as a key reference point on the international classification of mixed race and ethnicity for students and scholars across sociology, ethnic and racial studies, and public policy, as well as policy makers and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the concept of "race" The term "race," which originally denoted genealogical or class identity, has in the comparatively brief span of 300 years taken on an entirely new meaning. In the wake of the Enlightenment it came to be applied to social groups. This ideological transformation coupled with a dogmatic insistence that the groups so designated were natural, and not socially created, gave birth to the modern notion of "races" as genetically distinct entities. The results of this view were the encoding of "race" and "racial" hierarchies in law, literature, and culture. How "racial" categories facilitate social control The articles in the series demonstrate that the classification of humans according to selected physical characteristics was an arbitrary decision that was not based on valid scientific method. They also examine the impact of colonialism on the propagation of the concept and note that "racial" categorization is a powerful social force that is often used topromote the interests of dominant social groups. Finally, the collection surveys how laws based on "race" have been enacted around the world to deny power to minority groups. A multidisciplinary resource This collection of outstanding articles brings multiple perspectives to bear on race theory and draws on a wider ranger of periodicals than even the largest library usually holds. Even if all the articles were available on campus, chances are that a student would have to track them down in several libraries and microfilm collections. Providing, of course, that no journals were reserved for graduate students, out for binding, or simply missing. This convenient set saves students substantial time and effort by making available all the key articles in one reliable source. Authoritative commentary The series editor has put together a balanced selection of the most significant works, accompanied by expert commentary. A general introduction gives important background informationand outlines fundamental issues, current scholarship, and scholarly controversies. Introductions to individual volumes put the articles in context and draw attention to germinal ideas and major shifts in the field. After reading the material, even a beginning student will have an excellent grasp of the basics of the subject. Also available individually by volume, 1. The Concept of "Race" in Natural and Social Science (0-8153-2600-9) 288 pages. 2. Cultural and Literary Critiques of the Concepts of "Race" (0-8153-2601-7) 3.
