Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reader will first learn to measure his racing car himself in order to ultimately get to know and understand the car's setup better. This is followed successively by the teaching of the basics with the claim of immediate applicability of the knowledge. First, the most important properties of the tyres are described in order to convey how to optimally utilise the properties of the tyres. Only then are the mass-spring system, shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, suspension geometries and aerodynamics dealt with, with the aim of making the best possible use of the tyres' potential. What has been learned is optimally applied to driving through a curve, divided into five essential phases of the corner, and an analysis for possible causes of understeer and oversteer is carried out for each phase, and solutions are given. Finaly examples of laptime simulations are being described, and the book ends with a very clear description of the calculation of the Magic Numbers regarding Roll, Roll Resistance, Load Transfer and Total Wheel Load.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the book is on the driving dynamics of racing vehicles. The interaction of the tyre, the aerodynamics, of the chassis and the limited slip differential specific to racing vehicles is dealt with. A chapter on the basics of vehicle dynamics makes it possible to get started with this topic even without prior automotive engineering training. A historical review and a consideration of the essential safety aspects create an understanding of higher-level requirements, which are specified, for example, by the technical regulations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hand-selected by racing engineer legend Carroll Smith, the 28 SAE Technical Papers in this book focus on the chassis and suspension design of pure racing cars, an area that has traditionally been - farmed out - to independent designers or firms since the early 1970s. Smith believed that any discussion of vehicle dynamics must begin with a basic understanding of the pneumatic tire, the focus of the first chapter. The racing tire connects the racing car to the track surface by only the footprints of its four tires. Through the tires, the driver receives most of the sensory information needed to maintain or regain control of the race car at high force levels. The second chapter, focusing on suspension design, is an introduction to this complex and fascinating subject. Topics covered include chassis stiffness and flexibility, suspension tuning on the cornering of a Winston Cup race car, suspension kinematics, and vehicle dynamics of road racing cars. Chapter 3 addresses the design of the racing chassis design and how aerodynamics affect the chassis, and the final chapter on materials brings out the fact that the modern racing car utilizes carbon construction to the maximum extent allowed by regulations. These technical papers, written between 1971 and 2003, offer what Smith believed to be the best and most practical nuggets of racing chassis and suspension design information.

Book excerpt: This textbook covers handling and performance of both road and race cars. Mathematical models of vehicles are developed always paying attention to state the relevant assumptions and to provide explanations for each step. This innovative approach provides a deep, yet simple, analysis of the dynamics of vehicles. The reader will soon achieve a clear understanding of the subject, which will be of great help both in dealing with the challenges of designing and testing new vehicles and in tackling new research topics. The book deals with several relevant topics in vehicle dynamics that are not discussed elsewhere and this new edition includes thoroughly revised chapters, with new developments, and many worked exercises. Praise for the previous edition: Great book! It has changed drastically our approach on many topics. We are now using part of its theory on a daily basis to constantly improve ride and handling performances. -- Antonino Pizzuto, Head of Chassis Development Group at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center Astonishingly good! Everything is described in a very compelling and complete way. Some parts use a different approach than other books. -- Andrea Quintarelli, Automotive Engineer.
