Tomlinson, the grandfather, settled on these ats in 17 7 2, two years before the murder of Logan's family. Large trees, as large as any in the forest, then covered the ats and the mound. There stood in the depression I have mentioned, in the top of the mound, a large beech tree, which had been visited earlier, as was shewn by several names and dates cut on the bark. Among these, there was one of the date of A. D. 1734. This I have seen stated under Mr. Tomlinson's own hand. The place continued to be much visited from 1770 to 1790, as was shewn by newer names and dates, and indeed, continues to be so still. There was standing at the time of my first visit in 1818, on the very summit of the mound, a large dead or decayed white oak, which was cut down, it appears, about ten years afterwards. On counting its cortical layers, it was ascertained to be about 500 years old. This would denote the desertion of the mound to have happened about the commencement of the 13th century. Granting to this, what appears quite clear, that the in scription is of European 'origin, have we not evidence, in this fact, of the continent's having been visited prior to the era of Columbus? Visited by whom? By a people, or individuals, it may be said, who had the use of an antique alphabet, which was much employed, (although corrupted, varied and complicated by its Spread) among the native priest hood of the western shores and islands of the European continent, prior to the introduction of the Roman alphabet. The next object of antiquarian interest, in my descent, was at Gallipolis -the site of an original French settlement on the west bank, which is connected with a story of much interest, in the history of western migrations. It. Is an elevated and eligible plain, which had before been the site of an Indian, or aboriginal settlement. Some of the articles found in a mound, such as plates of mica and sea shells, and beads of the wrought conch, indicated the same remote period for this ancient settlement, as the one at Grave Creek Flats; 'but I never heard of any inscribed articles, or monuments bearing alphabetic characters. Neither is knowingly departed from. It is a difficult thing to do - this telling of the truth, the narrating of facts, without at once creating the impression of a partisan temper or a biased mind. Yet so far as this writer knows he has neither. For a number of years I have studied the various phenomena of racial contact which we conveniently designate the race problem. I have also studied the literature which treats of this problem. If the facts are confusing and difficult of comprehension the literature is scarcely less so. It fails, it seems to me, at a vital point, in that it is based on either side upon an assumed lack of honesty and absence of fairness on the other. The truth is that the conflicting American attitude on the race problem is an entirely natural product of the sectionalism which almost from the beginning has saturated and beclouded the whole subject. It is a humanly difficult matter for people in different environments to look at the basic cause of their differences through the same glasses. One trouble is that we have made too little honest effort to accomplish this difficult but necessary end. (applause) Now We are a people who are inspired, to a very much greater extent than possibly we are sometimes given credit for, with the Spirit of idealism, and the bravery of this little Servian people, struggling for its national dignity and self respect against this arrogant, cowardly and brutal ultimatum of Austria, most powerfully appealed to the sympathies of the American people and awakened in them, in that period of peace that preceded the war, all the old-time love of liberty which has. Characterized our government from its very beginning. But against that there was a conflicting tradition which did much to confuse our minds and paralyse our judgment. It was a tradition to which we attached a reverence that you cannot possibly imagine, a reverence ap proaching to intellectual idolatry. No other nation probably has a founder quite in the sense of the United States, for no other nation can trace back its beginnings to one man quite as the United States can. And the United States not only has this unique position in having one individual of surpassing wisdom and courage and nobility of mind, to whom it traces the very in ception of the Republic, but it has a founder, upon whom the suffrages of mankind, without respect to race, nation or creed, have paid with unusual unanimity of sentiment the tribute of being one of the noblest personalities that ever lived in the tide of time. (cheers) When George Washington came to lay down his office, he wrote his political testament, a very remarkable thing for him to do, for he was a very shy, diffident and modest man. He rarely expressed an Opinion unless it was solicited, and he at all times felt that others knew far more of a given subject than he could possibly do. He took into consultation the three great Spirits of that period of my country's history, Alexander Hamilton, our greatest constructive statesman; Thomas Jefferson, the prophet of democracy, of whom it might be said, as Rostand pictured his Chanticleer, that while he may not have actually caused the dawn of democracy, at least he proclaimed with clarion voice its radiant dawn (applause) and James Madison, an acute and profound constitutional lawyer. These three men collaborated with Washington in the immortal farewell address. And I want to read to you the very keynote of that address, in which Washington pointed out the path for the Republic that he had founded across the trackless sea of time. He said: Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none, or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence therefore, it must be unwise to implicate ourselves by artificial ties - now mark these words - in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.
