Book excerpt: Relational mathematics is to operations research and informatics what numerical mathematics is to engineering: it is intended to help modelling, reasoning, and computing. Its applications are therefore diverse, ranging from psychology, linguistics, decision aid, and ranking to machine learning and spatial reasoning. Although many developments have been made in recent years, they have rarely been shared amongst this broad community of researchers. This comprehensive 2010 overview begins with an easy introduction to the topic, assuming a minimum of prerequisites; but it is nevertheless theoretically sound and up to date. It is suitable for applied scientists, explaining all the necessary mathematics from scratch using a multitude of visualised examples, via matrices and graphs. It ends with tangible results on the research level. The author illustrates the theory and demonstrates practical tasks in operations research, social sciences and the humanities.

Book excerpt: This revised edition provides an excellent introduction to topics in Real Analysis through an elaborate exposition of all fundamental concepts and results. The treatment is rigorous and exhaustive—both classical and modern topics are presented in a lucid manner in order to make this text appealing to students. Clear explanations, many detailed worked examples and several challenging ones included in the exercises, enable students to develop problem-solving skills and foster critical thinking. The coverage of the book is incredibly comprehensive, with due emphasis on Lebesgue theory, metric spaces, uniform convergence, Riemann–Stieltjes integral, multi-variable theory, Fourier series, improper integration, and parametric integration. The book is suitable for a complete course in real analysis at the advanced undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given a ring of subsets of a non-empty set, there is a universal measure on the ring with values in an associated complete locally convex space which carries, through its typology, much of the combinatorial and measure theoretic structure of the ring. Moreover, vector measures of the ring are in 1-1 correspondence with continuous linear maps on the associated space. Several aspects of the theory of vector measures including decomposition theorems, extension theorems, Bartle-Dunford-Schwartz type theorems on weak compactness, and Pettis and Orlicz-Pettis-type theorems are studied in the unifying context of the universal measure and the associated universal representation theorem. A brief account of a similar theory for measures on abstract Boolean algebras is also given.

Book excerpt: This book deals mainly with the study of convex functions and their behavior from the point of view of stability with respect to perturbations. We shall consider convex functions from the most modern point of view: a function is de?ned to be convex whenever its epigraph, the set of the points lying above the graph, is a convex set. Thus many of its properties can be seen also as properties of a certain convex set related to it. Moreover, we shall consider extended real valued functions, i. e. , functions taking possibly the values?? and +?. The reason for considering the value +? is the powerful device of including the constraint set of a constrained minimum problem into the objective function itself (by rede?ning it as +? outside the constraint set). Except for trivial cases, the minimum value must be taken at a point where the function is not +?, hence at a point in the constraint set. And the value ?? is allowed because useful operations, such as the inf-convolution, can give rise to functions valued?? even when the primitive objects are real valued. Observe that de?ning the objective function to be +? outside the closed constraint set preserves lower semicontinuity, which is the pivotal and mi- mal continuity assumption one needs when dealing with minimum problems. Variational calculus is usually based on derivatives.

Book excerpt: This volume contains 6 invited lectures and 13 submitted contributions to the scientific programme of the international workshop Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence Research, FAIR '91, held at Smolenice Castle, Czechoslovakia, September 8-12, 1991, under the sponsorship of the European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence, ECCAI. FAIR'91, the first of an intended series of international workshops, addresses issues which belong to the theoretical foundations of artificial intelligence considered as a discipline focused on concise theoretical description of some aspects of intelligence by toolsand methods adopted from mathematics, logic, and theoretical computer science. The intended goal of the FAIR workshops is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and results in a domain where theoretical models play an essential role. It is felt that such theoretical studies, their development and their relations to AI experiments and applications have to be promoted in the AI research community.

Book excerpt: The Software Engineering and Knowledgebase Systems (SOFfEKS) Research Group of the Department of Computer Science, Concordia University, Canada, organized a workshop on Incompleteness and Uncertainty in Information Systems from October 8-9, 1993 in Montreal. A major aim of the workshop was to bring together researchers who share a concern for issues of incompleteness and uncertainty. The workshop attracted people doing fundamental research and industry oriented research in databases, software engineering and AI from North America, Europe and Asia. The workshop program featured six invited talks and twenty other presentations. The invited speakers were: Martin Feather (University of Southern CalifornialInformation Systems Institute) Laks V. S. Lakshmanan (Concordia University) Ewa Orlowska (Polish Academy of Sciences) z. Pawlak (Warsaw Technical University and Academy of Sciences) F. Sadri (Concordia University) A. Skowron (Warsaw University) The papers can be classified into four groups: rough sets and logic, concept analysis, databases and information retrieval, and software engineering. The workshop opened with a warm welcome speech from Dr. Dan Taddeo, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. The first day's presentations were in rough sets, databases and information retrieval. Papers given on the second day centered around software engineering and concept analysis. Sufficient time was given in between presentations to promote active interactions and numerous lively discussions. At the end of two days, the participants expressed their hope that this workshop would be continued.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we give a complete geometric description of state spaces of operator algebras, Jordan as well as associative. That is, we give axiomatic characterizations of those convex sets that are state spaces of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, together with such characterizations for the normed Jordan algebras called JB-algebras and JBW-algebras. These non associative algebras generalize C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras re spectively, and the characterization of their state spaces is not only of interest in itself, but is also an important intermediate step towards the characterization of the state spaces of the associative algebras. This book gives a complete and updated presentation of the character ization theorems of [10]' [11] and [71]. Our previous book State spaces of operator algebras: basic theory, orientations and C*-products, referenced as [AS] in the sequel, gives an account of the necessary prerequisites on C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, as well as a discussion of the key notion of orientations of state spaces. For the convenience of the reader, we have summarized these prerequisites in an appendix which contains all relevant definitions and results (listed as (AI), (A2), ... ), with reference back to [AS] for proofs, so that this book is self-contained.
