Book excerpt: Marcel Grossmann Meetings are formed to further the development of General Relativity by promoting theoretical understanding in the fields of physics, mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics and to direct future technological, observational, and experimental efforts. In these meetings are discussed recent developments in classical and quantum gravity, general relativity and relativistic astrophysics, with major emphasis on mathematical foundations and physical predictions, with the main objective of gathering scientists from diverse backgrounds for deepening the understanding of spacetime structure and reviewing the status of test-experiments for Einstein's theory of gravitation. The range of topics is broad, going from the more abstract classical theory, quantum gravity and strings, to the more concrete relativistic astrophysics observations and modeling. The three volumes of the proceedings of MG12 give a broad view of all aspects of gravitational physics and astrophysics, from mathematical issues to recent observations and experiments. The scientific program of the meeting includes 29 plenary talks stretched over 6 mornings, and 74 parallel sessions over 5 afternoons. Volume A contains plenary and review talks ranging from the mathematical foundations of classical and quantum gravitational theories including recent developments in string theories, to precision tests of general relativity including progress towards the detection of gravitational waves, to relativistic astrophysics including such topics as gamma ray bursts, black hole physics both in our galaxy, in active galactic nuclei and in other galaxies, neutron stars, pulsar astrophysics, gravitational lensing effects, neutrino physics and ultra high energy cosmic rays. The rest of the volumes include parallel sessions on dark matter, neutrinos, X-ray sources, astrophysical black holes, neutron stars, binary systems, radiative transfer, accretion disks, alternative gravitational theories, perturbations of collapsed objects, analog models, black hole thermodynamics, cosmic background radiation & observational cosmology, numerical relativity & algebraic computing, gravitational lensing, variable ';constants'; of nature, large scale structure, topology of the universe, brane-world cosmology, early universe models & cosmic microwave background anisotropies, inhomogeneous cosmology, inflation, gamma ray burst modeling, supernovas, global structure, singularities, cosmic censorship, chaos, Einstein-Maxwell systems, inertial forces, gravitomagnetism, wormholes & time machines, exact solutions of Einstein's equations, gravitational waves, gravitational wave detectors & data analysis, precision gravitational measurements, history of relativity, quantum gravity & loop quantum gravity, Casimir effect, quantum cosmology, strings & branes, self-gravitating systems, gamma ray astronomy, cosmic rays, gamma ray bursts and quasars.

Book excerpt: WEB OF SPINDLED TIME A Poetic Point of View A...spiritual journey unspooled in free verse, short prose and original artwork...the image of spindled time perfectly captures the experience of encountering Hendersons cosmic tome...This rhythmic alternation of inward and outward focus is one of Hendersons persistent themes, introduced in the prologueLooking outward, at my world, / I observed the constant changes around me, / Peering inward, I analyzed / My own shifting feelingsand revisited frequently, most memorably in several examples of concrete poetry...Elsewhere, various narrators on numerous paths and journeys invariably learn how much they do not yet know. In Blakean fashion, Henderson strives to deconstruct the tension of man simultaneously seeing himself as the image of perfection and as a mere, and mortal, fool. Wisdom, he suggests, lies in unifying both visions, often via paradox. In The Flight of the Spirit, for instance, the narrator laments, I have searched for an escape. / But, death comes to all. / Escape then, is inevitable. / Life is short. After further contemplation, however, he instead concludes that chains are loosened by death. / The soul drifts into the freedom / Of eternity, / Forever has no end / If death is short / And life is everlasting. For all its lofty philosophical inquiries, Hendersons poetry is generally unadorned, marked by plain speech and the occasional simple rhyme scheme. Because the mystic nature of these revelations is likely to confound reason, the mind can be slow to believe...so reading in small doses may be the best approach. Readers who see spiritual perfection as a journey, rather than a destination, will appreciate Henderson as a fellow traveler.

Book excerpt: In the heart of Africa, Kwame, a dedicated zoologist, wakes up to a silent and empty world. It's a New Year's Day like no other, with the sun rising over a landscape without human life. As he steps into the quiet wilderness, Kwame is faced with a haunting reality: he might be the last human left on Earth. With each day, the mystery deepens. The bustling streets and lively cities he once knew have become ghostly echoes of a world that seems to have vanished overnight. Nature, in all her untamed glory, is reclaiming her dominion, erasing the marks of human civilization and enveloping the earth in a wild new beauty. As months and years pass, Kwame's journey becomes a solitary quest for answers in this vast, silent world. Accompanied only by two cheetah cubs, Zulu and Nuru, he forges a unique bond with these majestic creatures, finding comfort in their fierce loyalty and the serene wilderness around him. 'The Silent Epoch' is a story of resilience and hope, a journey through a world transformed. It's a tale that invites us to follow Kwame's footsteps as he navigates through the remnants of a forgotten humanity, searching for signs of others, and a new meaning in this quiet, wild world. But is Kwame truly alone? Or does the silence hide secrets yet to be discovered? The answers lie ahead, as Kwame's odyssey takes us through the heart of a planet reborn, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Years before she shocked the world with her "Mad-House" and "Around The World" stories, Nellie Bly began her journalism career in her hometown of Pittsburg, PA. In this volume of (italics) The Nellie Bly Collection are over 80 articles from her days at (italics)The Pittsbug Dispatch, many of which have not seen the light of day since they were originally published over 130 years ago. Nellie's first articles address the plight of women, and rail against their second class standing in American society. She would follow that up with a series of articles focusing on women who worked in the factories around Pittsburg. Later, Nellie would travel to Mexico, writing about the people, places and a corrupt government that forced her to stay one step ahead of the police. In this collection, we truly find Nellie Bly discovering her voice as a journalist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 109. The Sun and the terrestrial magnetosphere have been the subjects of active research since the dawn of the space age. The capabilities of observing both systems with greater and greater detail evolved separately until the 1980s, when it was realized that definitive results on the connection between the Earth and the Sun would require a concerted and joint effort. It was also realized that sophisticated solar-terrestrial research communities existed within all the space-faring nations of the world and that no one of them could launch such an effort by itself. This realization led to the creation of the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) program, which now comprises at least 12 spacecraft and includes extensive ground-based observations and theory and modeling efforts.

Book excerpt: As he heads eastbound in the skies above Wyoming, Bud La Grande is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with friends. But when the weather turns deadly, Bud must land his plane in icy conditions outside Green River. Unfortunately, an emergency landing is not the worst of his troubles. As an unexpected event complicates his dilemma, Bud is left struggling for survival as his plane rests in a howling blizzard. Fortunately for Bud, a rescue team soon reaches him and transports him to the hospital. After his father-in-law, Daniel, travels to reach his bedside, Bud has no idea that Daniel is there not just to provide comfort, but to serve as God's emissary. As Daniel unveils secrets he hopes will orchestrate a reunion between Bud and the daughter who mysteriously disappeared years earlier, life comes full circle as Bud opens his heart to receive God's grace, love, and forgiveness. This book is a testament to the power of God's love as a plane lands in a blizzard and brings a lost soul back home again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible tells Christians not to grieve as the world grieves and to rejoice in their sufferings. Yet when author Kevin Ott lost his mother unexpectedly in 2010, he sank into a wintry depression. When life seemed the darkest, something surprising happened. While exploring eighteen C. S. Lewis books and thirteen U2 albums, he experienced tremendous “stabs of joy”—the unusual heaven-birthed joy that Lewis wrote about—in the midst of grief. This revelation not only pulled Kevin out of depression, it forever changed the way he experienced the love and joy of Christ. In Shadowlands and Songs of Light, you will:Learn fascinating details about C. S. Lewis, discover his unique definition of joy, understand how to apply his revelations about joy to suffering, and learn to recognize and cooperate with God’s strategic use of joy.Enjoy a grand tour of U2’s discography, with a special emphasis on their exploration of joy and suffering.Clearly understand, from the perspective of music theory explained in common terms, why the music of U2 is so emotionally powerful and how it serves as a perfect analogy for Lewis’s concepts of joy and the Christian ability to rejoice in suffering.Find inspiration from the personal stories of U2, especially the tragedies that engulfed their youth in Dublin, and see how they worked through that grief and discovered a joy that has kept the band together for over thirty-five years. When the out-of-control nature of the world and your weaknesses throw you off-balance, you can experience God’s grandeur and joy— discovering heaven’s perspective until it becomes your instinctive, default vantage point every day.

Book excerpt: David B. Sachsman and David W. Bulla have gathered a colourful collection of essays exploring sensationalism in nineteenth-century newspaper reporting. The contributors analyse the role of sensationalism and tell the story of both the rise of the penny press in the 1830s and the careers of specific editors and reporters dedicated to this particular journalistic style.Divided into four sections, the first, titled "The Many Faces of Sensationalism," provides an eloquent Defense of yellow journalism, analyses the place of sensational pictures, and provides a detailed examination of the changes in reporting over a twenty-year span. The second part, "Mudslinging, Muckraking, Scandals, and Yellow Journalism," focuses on sensationalism and the American presidency as well as why journalistic muckraking came to fruition in the Progressive Era.The third section, "Murder, Mayhem, Stunts, Hoaxes, and Disasters," features a ground-breaking discussion of the place of religion and death in nineteenth-century newspapers. The final section explains the connection between sensationalism and hatred. This is a must-read book for any historian, journalist, or person interested in American culture.
