Book Synopsis The Harvest of a Quiet Eye by : John Richard Vernon
Download or read book The Harvest of a Quiet Eye written by John Richard Vernon and published by anboco. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers, written in the intervals of parish work, have appeared in the pages of the Leisure Hour and the Sunday at Home. Their publication in a collected form having been decided upon by others, it only remained for me, by careful revision and excision, to render them as little unworthy as might be of starting for themselves in the wide world. I shall not say that I am sorry that they are thus sent forth on their humble mission. Indeed, I am glad. "Brief life is here our portion":—and surely the wish is one natural to all earnest hearts, that our work for our Master in this sad and sinful world should not have its term together with thex quick ending of our short day's labour here:—and a book has the possibility of a longer life than that of a man. The Night cometh, when none can work; how sweet, if it might be, that when the day is ended, when the warfare, for us, is over, we may have left some strong watchwords, or some comfortable and cheering utterances, still ringing in the ears of those who stepped into our place in the unbroken ranks. Yes, the evening soon falls on the field; the day is brief, nor fully employed; inanimate things seem to have an advantage over us; streams flow on, and mountains stand; "While we, the brave, the mighty, and the wise, We men, who, in our morn of youth, defied The elements, must vanish:—be it so! Enough, if something from our hands have power To live, and act, and serve the future hour." And I may be permitted to hope that possibly these meditations may have such power and perform such, service in their modest way. They have but the ambition of a flower that looks up to cheer, or a bird's note that tranquilly, amid storms, continues a simple melody from the heart of its tree. They will, like these, be easily passed by, but, like these, may have a message for hearts that will look and listen.

Book excerpt: Meet Cairo Banks, defender of Banks Cay, a rugged little Florida island that a whole bunch of folks are willing to kill for. He's back home from doing God-knows-what as a diplomatic hit man for the United States Security Service. He's been trying to be a simple shopkeeper, a good husband to his saltwater rock and roller wife, and a good father to two enterprising daughters with his penchant for risk and adventure. And he has enjoyed being the son of his salty-tongued cracker momma who has protected their bucolic little island home with a will stronger than a well rope. Then somebody goes and shoots Cairo's momma. Pissing off Cairo Banks turns out not to be such a good thing. "Benson has dreamed up an ensemble of delightfully offbeat characters who populate a place we’d all like to find." —Saltwater Writer’s Review "With this debut novel, Benson may be on his way in joining the ranks of the fun Florida writers like Shames, Hiaasen and Corcoran. This charmingly zany story draws readers right into the action." —Bud Holland Florida Loafing "If he’s the dude who gave me twenty bucks to say something good about a book he wrote, then sure, it’s a helluva book. Great read." —Willard "Junkman" Moody Tenth Street Viaduct

Book excerpt: In the brilliant tradition of Don Quixote and Candide, this passionate novel by the author of Before Night Falls is a modern masterpiece of Latin American fiction. Fray Servando—priest, blasphemer, dueler of monsters, irresistible lover, misunderstood prophet, prisoner, and consummate escape artist—wanders among the vice-ridden populations of eighteenth-century Europe and the Americas, fleeing dungeons, a marriage-minded woman, a slave ship captain, and the Inquisition. Whether by burro, by boat, or by the back of a whale, Fray Servando’s journey is at once funny and romantic, melancholy and profound—a tale rooted in history, yet outrageously hallucinatory. “An impenitent amalgam of truth and invention, historical fact and outrageous make-believe . . . a philosophical black comedy.”—The New York Times

Book Synopsis Palestinian Walks by : Raja Shehadeh
Download or read book Palestinian Walks written by Raja Shehadeh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A rare historical insight into the tragic changes taking place in Palestine.” —Jimmy Carter From one of Palestine’s leading writers, a lyrical, elegiac account of one man’s wanderings through the landscape he loves—once pristine, now forever changed by settlements and walls—updated with a new afterword by the author. “I often come to walk in these hills,” I said to the man who was doing all the talking and seemed to be the commander. “In fact I was once here with my wife, it was 1999, and some of your soldiers shot at us.” “It was over on that side,” the soldier pointed out. “I was there,” he said, smiling. When Raja Shehadeh first started hill walking in Palestine, in the late 1970s, he was not aware that he was traveling through a vanishing landscape. In recent years, his hikes have become less than bucolic and sometimes downright dangerous. That is because his home is Ramallah, on the Palestinian West Bank, and the landscape he traverses is now the site of a tense standoff between his fellow Palestinians and settlers newly arrived from Israel. In this original and evocative book, we accompany Raja on six walks taken between 1978 and 2006. The earlier forays are peaceful affairs, allowing our guide to meditate at length on the character of his native land, a terrain of olive trees on terraced hillsides, luxuriant valleys carved by sacred springs, carpets of wild iris and hyacinth and ancient monasteries built more than a thousand years ago. Shehadeh's love for this magical place saturates his renderings of its history and topography. But latterly, as seemingly endless concrete is poured to build settlements and their surrounding walls, he finds the old trails are now impassable and the countryside he once traversed freely has become contested ground. He is harassed by Israeli border patrols, watches in terror as a young hiking companion picks up an unexploded missile and even, on one occasion when accompanied by his wife, comes under prolonged gunfire. Amid the many and varied tragedies of the Middle East, the loss of a simple pleasure such as the ability to roam the countryside at will may seem a minor matter. But in Palestinian Walks, Raja Shehadeh's elegy for his lost footpaths becomes a heartbreaking metaphor for the deprivations of an entire people estranged from their land.
