Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Forestry, Vol. 1 The Heathen - Although readers of a forestry journal usually know more about the weather than they wish, it is such a characteristic British institution that it would be unpatriotic not to mention it. So far as the North of England is concerned, the summer of 1906 has probably been one of the best for years. Sufficient heat and sufficient moisture, following a cold but not seriously frosty Spring, have produced a growth on all forest trees which we should imagine to be above the average; while newly planted trees which failed to grow had to excuse themselves on other ground than a dry season. In the South, more frosty and droughty conditions prevailed, and for once in a way this part of the country has been less favored than the North. However, it is probably safe to say that while better seasons may have been seen, there have also been a great many worse, and taking things all round, the forester has no serious cause for complaint against the weather of 1906. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Forestry, 1919, Vol. 17: Official Organ of the Society of American Foresters, Combining the Proceedings of the Society and the Forestry Quarterly During the past five years there has been a cumulative realization of the fact that the low scale of salaries paid by the Forest Service was causing a shortage of competent men on the National Forests.' The cost of living has so far outstripped the almost negligible promotions allowed by Congress that there has been an increasing annual exodus of leadership, experience, and ability - technical and non-technical into other fields. This fact is so well known as to require no further proof or mention. The purpose of this paper is to point out two facts which I believe have so far been realized only dimly, if at all, by the profession: First, that the salary situation threatens the ultimate success of our great experiment in national forestry; second, that really logical methods of redress have not yet been attempted. Download or read book The Tree Experts written by Mark Johnston and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2021-08-02 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trees are now in the public eye as never before. The threat of tree diseases, the felling of street trees, and the challenge of climate change are just some of the issues that have put trees in the media spotlight. At the same time, the trees in our parks, gardens, and streets are a vital resource that can deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits that make our towns and cities attractive, green, and healthy places. Ever since Roman times when amenity trees were first planted in Britain, caring for those trees has required specialist skills. This is mainly because of the challenges of successfully integrating large trees into the urban environment and the risks involved in working with them, often at height and in close proximity to people, buildings and roads. But who are the people with the specialist expertise to care for our amenity trees? While professionals such as horticulturists, landscape architects, conservationists and foresters have a role to play, it is the arboriculturists who are the ‘tree experts’. For centuries arboriculture was often synonymous with forestry or considered an aspect of horticulture, until it emerged in the nineteenth century as a separate discipline. There are now some 22,000 people employed in Britain’s arboricultural industry, including practical tree surgeons and arborists, local authority tree officers, and arboricultural consultants. This is the first book to trace the history of Britain’s professional tree experts, from the Roman arborator to the modern chartered arboriculturist. It also discusses the influences from continental Europe and North America that have helped to shape British arboriculture over the centuries. The Tree Experts will have particular appeal to those interested in the natural and built environment, heritage landscapes, social history, and the history of gardening.
Book Synopsis The Silviculture of Trees Used in British Forestry, 3rd Edition by : Peter S Savill
Download or read book The Silviculture of Trees Used in British Forestry, 3rd Edition written by Peter S Savill and published by CABI. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British woodlands and forests are often located on sites and in regions that are marginal for agriculture; many are at high elevations and exposed, with short growing seasons. Wherever forests are located, site and climatic conditions must dictate species choice in forest management. This book provides a detailed guide to the biological suitability of different sites and soils for all important native trees and the most extensively used exotics. Apart from physical difficulties such as steepness and stoniness, forest soils also frequently have problems associated with them. They can be waterlogged or drought-prone, suffer from extremes of acidity or alkalinity, or have compacted layers. The book provides information on species' suitability for different purposes. It includes details of species' origin and introduction (where applicable), as well as their climatic and soil requirements and other silvicultural characteristics. Information about provenance, yield and timber is also provided. Fully updated throughout, this 3rd edition puts more emphasis on species suitable for changing climatic conditions, with accounts of several species that may become more prominent in British forests: including several silver firs, hickories, eucalypts, spruces, poplars and wingnuts. The book concludes with simple keys for identifying the trees most likely to be encountered in British forests. It is an essential resource for students, researchers and forestry professionals.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Forest Resource Economics by : Shashi Kant
Download or read book Handbook of Forest Resource Economics written by Shashi Kant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is increasingly recognized that the economic value of forests is not merely the production of timber. Forests provide other key ecosystem services, such as being sinks for greenhouse gases, hotspots of biodiversity, tourism and recreation. They are also vitally important in preventing soil erosion and controlling water supplies, as well as providing non-timber forest products and supporting the livelihoods of many local people. This handbook provides a detailed, comprehensive and broad coverage of forest economics, including traditional forest economics of timber production, economics of environmental role of forests, and recent developments in forest economics. The chapters are grouped into six parts: fundamental topics in forest resource economics; economics of forest ecosystems; economics of forests, climate change, and bioenergy; economics of risk, uncertainty, and natural disturbances; economics of forest property rights and certification; and emerging issues and developments. Written by leading environmental, forest, and natural resource economists, the book represents a definitive reference volume for students of economics, environment, forestry and natural resource economics and management.

Book Synopsis Legal, Institutional, and Economic Indicators of Forest Conservation and Sustainable Management by :
Download or read book Legal, Institutional, and Economic Indicators of Forest Conservation and Sustainable Management written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This review looks at the Nation's legal, institutional, and economic capacity to promote forest conservation and sustainable resource management. It focuses on 20 indicators of Criterion Seven of the so-called Montreal Process and involves an extensive search and synthesis of information from a variety of sources. It identifies ways to fill information gaps and improve the usefulness of several indicators. It concludes that there is substantial information about the application of such capacities, although that application is widely dispersed among agencies and private interests; which in turn has led to differing interpretations of the indicators. Individual chapters identify a need to further develop the conceptual foundation on which many of the indicators are predicated. While many uncertainties in the type and accuracy of information are brought to light, the review clearly indicates that legal, institutional, and economic capacities to promote sustainability are large and widely available in both the public and private sectors."--P. vi.
