Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Theory is a collection of papers presented at the 1977 conference on the Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Theory, held in New Orleans. The contributors present their topics from a wide variety of backgrounds and specialization, but all shared a common interest in answering quantum issues. Organized into 20 chapters, this book's opening chapters establish a sound mathematical basis for quantum theory and a mode of observation in the double slit experiment. This book then describes the Lorentz particle system and other mathematical structures with which fundamental quantum theory must deal, and then some unsolved problems in the quantum logic approach to the foundations of quantum mechanics are considered. Considerable chapters cover topics on manuals and logics for quantum mechanics. This book also examines the problems in quantum logic, and then presents examples of their interpretation and relevance to nonclassical logic and statistics. The accommodation of conventional Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics in quantum mechanics or quantum field theory is illustrated. The final chapters of the book present a system of axioms for nonrelativistic quantum mechanics, with particular emphasis on the role of density operators as states. Specific connections of this theory with other formulations of quantum theory are also considered. These chapters also deal with the determination of the state of an elementary quantum mechanical system by the associated position and momentum distribution. This book is of value to physicists, mathematicians, and researchers who are interested in quantum theory.

Book excerpt: Control theory provides a large set of theoretical and computational tools with applications in a wide range of ?elds, running from ”pure” branches of mathematics, like geometry, to more applied areas where the objective is to ?nd solutions to ”real life” problems, as is the case in robotics, control of industrial processes or ?nance. The ”high tech” character of modern business has increased the need for advanced methods. These rely heavily on mathematical techniques and seem indispensable for competitiveness of modern enterprises. It became essential for the ?nancial analyst to possess a high level of mathematical skills. C- versely, the complex challenges posed by the problems and models relevant to ?nance have, for a long time, been an important source of new research topics for mathematicians. The use of techniques from stochastic optimal control constitutes a well established and important branch of mathematical ?nance. Up to now, other branches of control theory have found comparatively less application in ?n- cial problems. To some extent, deterministic and stochastic control theories developed as di?erent branches of mathematics. However, there are many points of contact between them and in recent years the exchange of ideas between these ?elds has intensi?ed. Some concepts from stochastic calculus (e.g., rough paths) havedrawntheattentionofthedeterministiccontroltheorycommunity. Also, some ideas and tools usual in deterministic control (e.g., geometric, algebraic or functional-analytic methods) can be successfully applied to stochastic c- trol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordered vector spaces and cones made their debut in mathematics at the beginning of the twentieth century. They were developed in parallel (but from a different perspective) with functional analysis and operator theory. Before the 1950s, ordered vector spaces appeared in the literature in a fragmented way. Their systematic study began around the world after 1950 mainly through the efforts of the Russian, Japanese, German, and Dutch schools. Since cones are being employed to solve optimization problems, the theory of ordered vector spaces is an indispensable tool for solving a variety of applied problems appearing in several diverse areas, such as engineering, econometrics, and the social sciences. For this reason this theory plays a prominent role not only in functional analysis but also in a wide range of applications. This is a book about a modern perspective on cones and ordered vector spaces. It includes material that has not been presented earlier in a monograph or a textbook. With many exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, the book is suitable for graduate courses. Most of the new topics currently discussed in the book have their origins in problems from economics and finance. Therefore, the book will be valuable to any researcher and graduate student who works in mathematics, engineering, economics, finance, and any other field that uses optimization techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was published in 1978 and a new Spanish e(,tition in 1989. When the first edition appeared, Professor A. Martin suggested that an English translation would meet with interest. Together with Professor A. S. Wightman, he tried to convince an American publisher to translate the book. Financial problems made this impossible. Later on, Professors E. H. Lieband W. Thirring proposed to entrust Springer-Verlag with the translation of our book, and Professor W. BeiglbOck accepted the plan. We are deeply grateful to all of them, since without their interest and enthusiasm this book would not have been translated. In the twelve years that have passed since the first edition was published, beautiful experiments confirming some of the basic principles of quantum me chanics have been carried out, and the theory has been enriched with new, im portant developments. Due reference to all of this has been paid in this English edition, which implies that modifications have been made to several parts of the book. Instances of these modifications are, on the one hand, the neutron interfer ometry experiments on wave-particle duality and the 27r rotation for fermions, and the crucial experiments of Aspect et al. with laser technology on Bell's inequalities, and, on the other hand, some recent results on level ordering in central potentials, new techniques in the analysis of anharmonic oscillators, and perturbative expansions for the Stark and Zeeman effects.

Book excerpt: Both mathematics and mathematical physics have many active areas of research where the interplay between geometry and quantum field theory has proved extremely fruitful. Duality, gauge field theory, geometric quantization, SeibergOCoWitten theory, spectral properties and families of Dirac operators, and the geometry of loop groups offer some striking recent examples of modern topics which stand on the borderline between geometry and analysis on the one hand and quantum field theory on the other, where the physicist''s and the mathematician''s perspective complement each other, leading to new mathematical and physical concepts and results. This volume introduces the reader to some basic mathematical and physical tools and methods required to follow the recent developments in some active areas of mathematical physics, including duality, gauge field theory, geometric quantization, Seiberg-Witten theory, spectral properties and families of Dirac operators, and the geometry of loop groups. It comprises seven self-contained lectures, which should progressively give the reader a precise idea of some of the techniques used in these areas, as well as a few short communications presented by young participants at the school. Contents: Lectures: Introduction to Differentiable Manifolds and Symplectic Geometry (T Wurzbacher); Spectral Properties of the Dirac Operator and Geometrical Structures (O Hijazi); Quantum Theory of Fermion Systems: Topics Between Physics and Mathematics (E Langmann); Heat Equation and Spectral Geometry. Introduction for Beginners (K Wojciechowski); Renormalized Traces as a Geometric Tool (S Paycha); Concepts in Gauge Theory Leading to Electric-Magnetic Duality (T S Tsun); An Introduction to Seiberg-Witten Theory (H Ocampo); Short Communications: Remarks on Duality, Analytical Torsion and Gaussian Integration in Antisymmetric Field Theories (A Cardona); Multiplicative Anomaly for the e-Regularized Determinant (C Ducourtioux); On Cohomogeneity One Riemannian Manifolds (S M B Kashani); A Differentiable Calculus on the Space of Loops and Connections (M Reiris); Quantum Hall Conductivity and Topological Invariants (A Reyes); Determinant of the Dirac Operator Over the Interval [0, ] (F Torres-Ardila). Book excerpt: The word "quantum" is from the Latin for "how much" and in this book mathematician David Orrell shows how it applies to the world of economic transactions. Written in clear and accessible language, the book covers the essential mathematics behind topics such as quantum cognition, option pricing, and quantum game theory, and delves into the nuts and bolts of quantum mechanics, the principles of quantum economic modelling, and the basics of quantum computation. On the way the reader will learn how quantum interference can be used to model cognitive dissonance, how a quantum walk goes further than a random walk, and how financial entanglement explains the rate of mortgage default. It is aimed at anyone who wants to understand the quantum ideas working their way into economics and finance, without getting drowned in wave equations. As interest in quantum computing grows, many companies from established banks to startups are looking at ways to perform financial simulations using quantum algorithms. But what if we should be using quantum models anyway - because the monetary system has quantum properties of its own, and because they work? The field is developing rapidly, and this second edition contains many updates including new material on quantum logic and quantum agent-based models, and a guest chapter from Ramy Aboushelbaya and Marko Mayr of Quantum Dice on quantum hardware. David Orrell is an applied mathematician with extensive experience in mathematical modelling, and the author of a dozen books on science and economics.
