Particular focus was placed on understanding characteristics of the secondary vorticity ejected from the body and the interaction of the secondary vorticity with the primary vortex. Since both onset of boundary layer separation and the form of the secondary vorticity structures are sensitive to variation of the velocity normal to the body axis, the effect of normal velocity on vortex-body interaction was carefully examined. The physical features of the flow evolution were categorized in terms of an impact parameter and a thickness parameter, which respectively represent ratios of velocity and length scales associated with the vortex to those associated with the flow in the absence of the vortex. Experiments were performed using a combination of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) flow visualization and particle-image velocimetry (PIV) in a water tank to examine the form of the secondary vorticity structures with both "high" and "low" values of the impact parameter for normal vortex interaction with a circular cylinder and with a thin blade. A new type of Lagrangian vorticity method based on a tetrahedral mesh was developed and applied to compute the secondary vorticity evolution during vortex-cylinder interaction. Computations were also performed for model problems to examine in detail wrapping of a vortex loop around a columnar vortex and impulsive cutting of a columnar vortex with finite axial flow.

Book excerpt: This book develops concepts and a methodology for a rational description of the organization of three-dimensional flows considering, in particular, the case where the flow is the place of separations. The descriptive analysis based on the critical point theory of Poincaré develops conventional but rather unfamiliar considerations from aerodynamicists, who face the understanding of complex flows including multiple separation lines and vortices. These problems concern industrial sectors where aerodynamics plays a key role, such as aerospace, ground vehicles, buildings, etc. Contents 1. Skin Friction Lines Pattern and Critical Points. 2. Separation Streamsurfaces and Vortex Structures. 3. Separated Flow on a Body. 4. Vortex Wake of Wings and Slender Bodies. 5. Separation Induced by an Obstacle or a Blunt Body. 6. Reconsideration of the Two-Dimensional Separation. 7. Concluding Remarks. About the Authors Jean Délery is a Supaero (French National Higher School of Aeronautics and Space) engineer who has worked at Onera (French national aerospace research center) since 1964. He has participated in several major French and European aerospace programs, is the author of many scientific publications, and has occupied various teaching positions particularly at Supaero, the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin, Ecole polytechnique in France and “La Sapienza” University in Rome, Italy. He is currently emeritus adviser at Onera.

Book excerpt: A time-resolved stereoscopic scanning particle image velocimetry (TR-SSPIV) system was developed to investigate the fine-scale 3D structures in free shear turbulent jets. The system provided a simultaneous measurement of the three-component velocity field in a three-dimensional volume (3D3C) with Kolmogorov-scale (eta) resolution, providing a true representation of the complete nine-component velocity gradient tensor. Quantitative visualization of the coherent structures at fine-scale turbulence is obtained and four basic structural shapes (sheets, tube, square ribbons and spherical blobs) are identified as building blocks of complex turbulent structures. The measurement volume had dimensions of 43eta x 20eta x 18eta, which allowed isolating individual structures. These rendered shapes had dimensions that range from 1.5-5eta to 20-30eta. The local acceleration du/dt is obtained and represented as 3D structures. These showed a strong anti-alignment with the convective acceleration term, which helps validate experimentally the Random Taylor Hypothesis. A novel vortex identification scheme is also introduced based on the local pressure. The method is compared to other published ones including enstrophy, Q, Lambda2 and Delta criteria. Four different flow configurations are tested and extensive statistical analyses are performed to study the probability density function (PDF), joint PDF, and spectra of the velocity gradients. The analysis also considered the vorticity, rate of strain, enstrophy, and dynamic parameters such as enstrophy production rate and energy dissipation rate. Accuracy assessments included result comparison to isotropy theory and evaluation of the local conservation of mass. The flow statistics and scaling of turbulence at fine scales are compared extensively to published theoretical, numerical, and experimental results.

Book excerpt: Surface streamline patterns on three bodies of revolution, namely a spheroid, a low-drag body and a hemisphere-hemispheroid combination body, have been examined at several angles of attack. Most of the tests were performed at low Reynolds numbers in a hydraulic flume using colored dye to make the surface flow visible. A limited number of experiments was also carried out in a wind tunnel, using wool tufts, to study the influence of Reynolds number and turbulent separation. The study has verified some of the important qualitative features of three-dimensional separation criteria proposed earlier by Maskell, Lighthill, Wang and others. The observed locations of laminar separation lines on a spheroid at various incidences have been compared with the numerical boundary-layer solutions of Wang, and it is suggested that the quantitative differences may be attributed to the significant viscous-inviscid interaction, especially at large incidences. Book excerpt: The subject is investigated with flow visualization techniques; the turbulent boundary layer on the wall of a continuous supersonic wind tunnel is used. Sizeable separated flow regions can be studied since the wall width is 38cm and the boundary layer is typically 2.5cm thick. The large scale of the experiment is required to resolve the fine details of the flow structure. The flow visualization techniques are discussed. The structure of the separated flow upstream of the obstacle is seen to change with relatively small changes in Reynolds number R; the number of vortices varies from 6 to 4 to 2 as R changes. Data are presented for large and small protuberances, but the latter are emphasized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three-dimensional vortex formation of a low-aspect-ratio (AR = 1.7), trapezoidal flat plate performing low Reynolds number (order 10^3) pure rotation from rest at a 90° angle of attack and is experimentally investigated. The objectives are to characterize the time-dependent, three-dimensional vortex structure as the plate motion progresses, to ascertain the ramifications of the significant root-to-tip flow on the vortex formation, and to determine the presence of and subsequently investigate any evidence of vortex saturation ("formation parameter") effects. The experiments are conducted in a glass water tank facility, and the diagnostics tools used are dye flow visualization and planar digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). The vortex structures created by the low-aspect-ratio plate are symmetric ring-like vortices comprised mainly of vorticity generated at the tip edge of the plate. For large rotation amplitudes the dye flow visualization shows the shedding of this ring-like vortex end even the generation of a secondary ring-like vortex, all while the plate is still in motion, indicating the saturation of the primary vortex. The time-varying vortex circulation, calculated from the DPIV measurements in the symmetry plane of the flow, provides quantitative evidence of vortex saturation. It was found that the temporal development of the vortex circulation is complex, which obscures the objective determination of physically relevant saturation times. This difficulty is a direct result of an interaction between the evolving formation of the final ring-like vortex via Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instabilities that are inherent in the separated shear layers emanating from the free edges of the plate, and the strong root-to-tip flow, which is induced by the tip-edge- and side-edge-vortices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vortex methods have emerged as a new class of powerful numerical techniques to analyze and compute vortex motion. This book addresses the theoretical, numerical, computational, and physical aspects of vortex methods and vortex motion. Vortex phenomena in fluid flows and the experimental, theoretical, and numerical methods used to characterize them are discussed in reviews by leading experts. Extensive photographs and sample computer graphics are provided. The development of large vortex structure in fluid flow is responsible for some of the most fascinating aspects of fluid dynamics, such as mixing, shearing, transport, and instability. Such issues arise in a variety of flow regimes, ranging from fundamental mathematical questions in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow to sophisticated engineering settings and devices.

Book excerpt: Viscous flow is treated usually in the frame of boundary-layer theory and as two-dimensional flow. Books on boundary layers give at most the describing equations for three-dimensional boundary layers, and solutions often only for some special cases. This book provides basic principles and theoretical foundations regarding three-dimensional attached viscous flow. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers. This wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems to be mastered in practice. The topics are weak, strong, and global interaction, the locality principle, properties of three-dimensional viscous flow, thermal surface effects, characteristic properties, wall compatibility conditions, connections between inviscid and viscous flow, flow topology, quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows, laminar-turbulent transition and turbulence. Though the primary flight speed range is that of civil air transport vehicles, flows past other flying vehicles up to hypersonic speeds are also considered. Emphasis is put on general three-dimensional attached viscous flows and not on three-dimensional boundary layers, as this wider scope is necessary in view of the theoretical and practical problems that have to be overcome in practice. The specific topics covered include weak, strong, and global interaction; the locality principle; properties of three-dimensional viscous flows; thermal surface effects; characteristic properties; wall compatibility conditions; connections between inviscid and viscous flows; flow topology; quasi-one- and two-dimensional flows; laminar-turbulent transition; and turbulence. Detailed discussions of examples illustrate these topics and the relevant phenomena encountered in three-dimensional viscous flows. The full governing equations, reference-temperature relations for qualitative considerations and estimations of flow properties, and coordinates for fuselages and wings are also provided. Sample problems with solutions allow readers to test their understanding.
