Book Synopsis The Quantitative Description of the Microstructure of Materials by : Krzysztof Jan Kurzydlowski
Download or read book The Quantitative Description of the Microstructure of Materials written by Krzysztof Jan Kurzydlowski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-07-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the product of a deep collaboration between the two authors, strikes a balance between the traditional approach and newly emerging techniques used to obtain a quantitative description of the microstructure of materials. The Quantitative Description of the Microstructure of Materials has a unique format that sets it apart from other books. The first half of the book gives a comprehensive account of the entire quantification process and presents material in a pedagogical style. Numerous examples appear throughout text to illustrate the methodology. A general introduction to the subject and basic concepts, definitions, techniques, and relationships are provided. Aspects of modern stereology are described in detail. Image processing, computer aided procedures of data analysis, and the elements of a system for image analysis also are discussed at length. The remaining chapters treat a series of significant examples in much more detail. This part of text offers information in an easy-to-access reference style, making it extremely useful as a guide to active researchers in the quantification guide. Topics include dislocations, internal and external surfaces, and quantitative characterization of thin film structures. The book covers geometry of grains and its effect on the properties of polycrystals. Particles, pores, and other isolated volumetric elements of the microstructure also are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes constitute the Proceedings of a Symposium on the Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics, held at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, July 11, 12, and 13, 1973. The theme of the symposium focussed on the mechanical behavior of brittle ceramics in terms of the characteristics of cracks. The 52 contributed papers by 87 authors, present an overview of the cur rent understanding of the theory and application of fracture mechan ics to brittle ceramics. The program chairmen gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance for the Symposium provided by the Office of Naval Re search, the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences of the Pennsyl vania State University, the Materials Research Center of Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pennsylvana and Westinghouse Research Laboratories, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Special appreciation is extended to the expert organization provided by the J. Orvis Keller Conference Center of the Pennsyl vania State Conference Center of the Pennsylvania State University. In particular, Mrs. Patricia Ewing should be acknowledged for the excellent program organization and planning. Dean Harold J. O'Brien, who was featured as the after-dinner speaker and who presented a most stimulating talk on the communication between people, also contrib uted to the success of the meeting. Finally, we also wish to thank our joint secretaries for the patience and help in bringing these Proceedings to press. University Park R. C. Bradt Bethlehem D. P. H. Book Synopsis The Effects of Slip Character and Crack Closure on the Growth of Small Fatigue Cracks in Titanium-aluminium Alloys by : James M. Larsen
Download or read book The Effects of Slip Character and Crack Closure on the Growth of Small Fatigue Cracks in Titanium-aluminium Alloys written by James M. Larsen and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was performed to study the effects of slip character and crack closure on the propagation of small fatigue cracks in titanium- aluminum alloys. The materials examined were solution-treated Ti-4Al and Ti-8Al, as well as aged Ti-8Al. The propagation of naturally initiated surface cracks of depths as small as 25 micrometers was compared with the behavior of large through-thickness cracks. An extensometer was used to monitor crack closure throughout the large crack tests, and the closure behavior of the small cracks was measured using a computerized laser interferometric displacement gage having a displacement resolution of 0.01 micrometer. The measurements of crack closure were used to compute an effective stress intensity factor range. In all three alloys and for all test conditions, which included a range of stress levels and stress ratios, small cracks propagated faster than large cracks subjected to an equivalent Delta K, and the small cracks propagated under conditions that were significantly below the large-crack threshold, Delta K(th). Although the character and distribution of slip in Ti-Al alloys may have a dramatic influence on fatigue crack initiation and on the propagation of large cracks, this effect was minimal for small cracks.

Book Synopsis Image-Based Fractal Description of Microstructures by : J.M. Li
Download or read book Image-Based Fractal Description of Microstructures written by J.M. Li and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractal analysis has rapidly become an important field in materials science and engineering with broad applications to theoretical analysis and quantitative description of microstructures of materials. Fractal methods have thus far shown great potential in engineering applications in quantitative microscopic analysis of materials using commercial microscopes. This book attempts to introduce the fundamentals and the basis methods of fractal description of microstructures in combination with digital imaging and computer technologies. Basic concepts are given in the form of mathematical expressions. Detailed algorithms in practical applications are also provided. Fractal measurement, error analysis and fractal description of cluster growth, thin films and surfaces are emphasized in this book. Image-Based Fractal Description of Microstructures provides a comprehensive approach to materials characterization by fractal from theory to application.
