Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire-adapted forested ecosystems in the Southwest evolved with a continual flux of downed woody materiala structural component that is considered essential to a properly functioning forest ecosystem. The creation and accumulation of downed woody material depends on forest type, tree species, stage of succession/decay, the amount of insect and disease activity, climate, fire return intervals, windthrow, and management activities. In general, more downed woody material accumulates in forests with long fire return intervals (subalpine, mixed conifer, pinyon-juniper woodlands) than in forests with short fire return intervals, such as ponderosa pine. While early foresters saw downed woody material as waste, a potential source of insect and disease problems or a wildfire hazard, todays foresters and researchers have identified the large-size component of downed woody material.

Download or read book Volume Calculations of Coarse Woody Debris written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead wood is recognized as one of the key indicators for sustainable forest management and biodiversity. Accurate assessments of dead wood volume are thus necessary. In this study New volume models were designed based on actual volume measurements of coarse woody debris. The New generic model accurately estimated volumes for all encountered tree parts (whole trees, stems, branches), is based on diameter and length only, and thus generally applicable for most studies. Therefore this New generic dbh-based coarse woody debris volume model was selected as the most appropriate one. Consequences for coarse woody debris volume estimates of forest reserves vary. Total dead wood volume can even be much larger when fine woody debris, dead wood attached to living trees and tree stumps are included.

Book Synopsis Ecological Bulletins, Ecology of Woody Debris in Boreal Forests by : Bengt Gunnar Jonsson
Download or read book Ecological Bulletins, Ecology of Woody Debris in Boreal Forests written by Bengt Gunnar Jonsson and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2001-12-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today dead trees are not only viewed upon as waste and as potential sources of pest species. Instead they have gained an increased attention as key factors for biodiversity in many ecosystems. This change in focus and concern has sparked intense research activities directed to explore the ecological role of dead trees in forest ecosystems. Focus is directed into three main areas: 1) to understand the patterns of woody debris availability in relation to forest stand dynamics and effects of forestry, 2) the role of woody debris in nutrient and particularly carbon dynamics in forest ecosystems, and 3) the pattern and biology of the utilization of woody debris for a large number of wood-dependent species. This volume summarises the present knowledge and presents a set of case studies on the role of dead wood in boreal forests. The focus is on Fennoscandian boreal forests. However, the results presented have a wide applicability and thus the volume may serve as a general introduction to the importance of woody debris in forest ecosystems.
