Book excerpt: The construction of levees along the Mississippi River [MR], beginning in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, have isolated the river along many segments from its floodplain. Sediment from the river is currently deposited in the hydrologically connected floodplain [HCF], the area between the channel margin at low water and the levees. Researchers have studied the amount and rates of sediment deposition along the Upper and Lower Mississippi River segments from the headwaters to Pool 22 and from the Ohio River to the delta; however, no such assessments have been undertaken along the Middle Mississippi River [MMR]. This study attempts to fill the knowledge gap by assessing sedimentation along three islands within the Middle Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge. On these islands two approaches were undertaken to assess sedimentation along the MMR's HCF: dendrogeomorphology and the DEM of Difference [DoD] approach. The dendrogeomorphic approach uses tree-ring analyses to document and interpret geomorphic processes and the rates at which they are occurring. The DoD approach subtracts an older DEM from a newer DEM in order to see the change in elevation/depth over time. The geomorphology of the islands and then the entire MMR HCF (from the confluence of the Missouri River to Thebes, IL) were mapped. Using the sedimentation rates for the geomorphic landforms from the three study islands, the sedimentation rates and volumes for the aforementioned portion of the MMR's HCF were estimated. The estimated volume of sediment was then compared to the MMR's suspended sediment flux to determine how much of the suspended sediment was going into storage within the MMR's HCF. The dendrogeomorphic and DoD methods for the study islands yielded average sedimentation rates of 13.3-16.9 mm year-1 and 21.5-80.1 mm year-1, respectively. The rates for the individual landforms on the islands using the dendrogeomorphic results ranged from 5.2 mm year-1 for the splay to 21.8 mm year -1 for the natural levee and splay, with a weighted average of 16.6 mm year-1 for the MMR HCF. Using these rates and the likely range of densities for the floodplain sediments, it is estimated that 4.9-6.6 million metric tons of sediment is accumulating within the MMR annually. This is approximately 5.4-7.4% of the average annual suspended sediment load of the Mississippi River at St. Louis. This means that the MMR is a major sediment sink. If these relatively rapid rates of deposition continue, they have the potential to substantially reduce the HCF's ability to convey and store flood water which will result in increased flood levels and, consequently, flood risk within the MMR's levee protected floodplain in the coming decades.

Book excerpt: The river-connected floodplain along the Mississippi River (MR)'s Dogtooth Bend has experienced substantial sedimentation over the past decade despite a 75% decrease in the total suspended sediment load between the mid-20th century to present. This large decrease in suspended sediment load has been one of the major drivers of land loss within the MR Delta and is attributed to the trapping of sediment behind large dams within the MR watershed. Recent studies have shown suspended sediment loads continue to decrease despite no substantial dams being constructed since the 1970s. One possible explanation for the continued decrease in suspended sediment loads along the MR is transient storage of suspended sediment in the river-connected floodplain. Recent levee breaches along the Dogtooth Bend segment of the MR have opened large, new storage areas (65 km2) where river transported sediments could be stored. To assess the role this recently reconnected floodplain plays as a potential sediment sink, this study quantifies geomorphic change across Dogtooth Bend and the adjacent river connected floodplain, using geomorphic change detection (GCD) software employing a pre (2011) and post (2020) levee breach, hi-resolution LiDAR based digital elevation models (DEMs). The GCD results show that the sediment deposition is unevenly distributed throughout the study area. Greater concentrations of sediment deposition were noted in vicinity of cutoff channels that are actively forming across the neck of Dogtooth Bend during flood events and along a fluvial terrace that traverses the eastern portion of the Bend. In the batture (the land between the main channel's low-water elevation and the flood mitigation levee), areas with substantial sedimentation are concentrated in vicinity of large islands downstream of the levee breach. The GCD estimated sediment deposition rates were 41±4 and 39±2 mm/yr for Dogtooth Bend and batture, respectively. The net sediment volume deposited across Dogtooth Bend and the adjacent batture were 27.9±3.0 and 34.3±1.6 Mt, respectively. The net deposition of 67.7 Mt over this 10-year study period equates to 6.8 Mt / year of sediment being deposited along this river segment which is ~8% of the river's annual average suspended load (~81 Mt / year). These results show this river segment is a substantial sink for river transported sediments and opening once levee protected areas can have a substantial impact on sediment load of the MR.

The effect of sediment must be considered in the design of river structures and in determining water quality for biotic systems. Changes in sediment transport regimes are difficult to understand or predict due to the complexity of factors that influence sediment flux in fluvial systems. Relationships about sediment source, sinks and transport have long been studied and many of these relationships have been quantitatively and qualitatively defined. However, due to the scarcity of long-term sediment records it is often difficult to test these relationships. This study examines one of these long-term suspended sediment records for the Mississippi River at East Dubuque, Illinois from 1943 to 1996. Daily suspended sediment concentrations from the United States Army Corps of Engineers station at East Dubuque were analyzed for the spring and summer months (March - August). Sediment concentrations were analyzed in terms of average concentration during different hydrologic events at the large basin scale. These events included the spring snowmelt runoff (low and high magnitude) and different intensity storm runoff (low, moderate and high). Additionally, peak sediment concentrations during storm runoff were also analyzed. The general trend for all of these analyses suggests a significant decrease in sediment concentrations from the 1940s to the 1990s. The strongest trends are found in high magnitude snowmelt runoff and in high and moderate magnitude storm runoff. Peak concentrations in storm runoff have decreased from about 1000 ppm in the l940s to about 200 ppm in the 1990s. Average concentrations have likewise decreased from about 200 ppm in the 1940s to 100 ppm in the 1990s. Changes in land management practices are identified as being the primary environmental factor influencing sediment concentrations.

Book excerpt: Excessive sediment transport adversely affects the hydrologic regime and water quality of a river and its drainage basin. With the decline of operational gauges monitoring sediments, establishing viable means of quantifying sediment transport is pressingly needed. In this study, I developed an alternative approach to address this issue where I applied the relationships between hydraulic geometry of river channels, river discharge, water-leaving surface reflectance (SR), and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) to quantify sediment discharge with the aid of spacebased observations. I investigated the approach with nine USGS gauging stations along the Upper Mississippi River — an important river system comprising almost half of the entire Mississippi River. I took advantage of the use of recent advances in remote sensing such as RivWidthCloud, Bayesian discharge inference coupled with at-many-stations hydraulic geometry (AMHG), and SSC-SR retrieval models. I examined 5,490 Landsat scenes to estimate the water discharge, SSC levels, and sediment discharge at nine locations along the Upper Mississippi River. Results showed that RivWidthCloud can be effectively used for Bayesian-AMHG discharge inference while the relationships between the SSC and Landsat SR are statistically significant at significance level [alpha] = 0.01 for all the study sites except in Clinton, IA. Acceptable gauge-specific SSC-SR model was obtained in the downstream having coefficients of determination R2 > 0.50. Similarly, acceptable regional-scale model was developed with R = 0.50. Further, results suggest that the three study sites at St. Louis, MO, Chester, IL, and Thebes, IL, in the downstream portion of the river, were the best locations for Q and SSC estimation with Landsat imagery. Estimations of Q were sensitive to the center of Q prior, which induces bias when inadequately estimated. Relatively, estimations of SSC were likely influenced by low reflectance of sediments during low flows due to chlorophyll and algae mixing in the water column. Lastly, I established in this study that combining the discharge and SSC retrieval from Landsat imagery can yield reasonable sediment discharge estimates having an average relative bias of 0.23, RRMSE of 0.95, and NSE of 0.40 for certain river segments in the Upper Mississippi River.
