Book excerpt: The hydrologic cycle evolves over time, with landscape changes driving differences in evapotranspiration, runoff, and groundwater recharge while climate change affects the timing and magnitude of precipitation as well as temperature. These changes also affect how sediment moves across the landscape and through watersheds. In this dissertation, I examine how land use changes and climate change both affect the movement of water and sediment through watersheds in the Great Lakes Basin.Extreme cases of land use change, such as the logging and forest fires that affected large swaths of the Great Lakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, can greatly increase both streamflow and sediment transport. Chapter 1 utilizes the process-based Landscape Hydrologic Model (LHM) to examine the hydrologic effects of land use change from the forested pre-settlement condition to clearcut, burned, and modern land uses in the northwestern corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. I show that extensive fires could have increased streamflow by 160% relative to the virgin forest landscape and 96% relative to the logged scenario. Chapter 2 focuses on modeling of the Jordan River watershed, showing that logging may have increased sediment transport in the river by up to 34% compared to pre-settlement conditions and a watershed-wide fire could have increased the sediment transport capacity by as much as 166% above the pre-settlement levels. A reach-based sediment budgeting tool, the Sediment Impact Assessment Methods (SIAM), highlights the possibility of complex system responses to land use change over time.Chapter 3 explores the potential impacts of climate change on sediment yield and dredging costs in the adjacent Maumee and St. Joseph River watersheds where I project that dredging costs may change in opposite directions (−8 to −16% in the St. Joseph but +1 to +6% in the Maumee). This difference between the two watersheds is driven by differences in the proportion of farmland and assumptions about how farmers will respond to a changing climate. I also show that there is a large variation in sediment yield and sediment discharge predictions because of the differences among the various Global Climate Model (GCM) projections.Rather than downscale and run all of the GCM projections, many researchers average a subset of the projections together and use the ensembled climate data as the input to hydrologic models. Book excerpt: The research presented here attempts to bridge science and policy through the quantification of climate change impacts and the analysis of a science-fed participatory process to face a sustainability challenge in the San Pedro Basin (Arizona). Paper 1 presents an assessment of a collaborative development process of a decision support system model between academia and a multi-stakeholder consortium created to solve water sustainability problems in a local watershed. This study analyzes how science-fed multi-stakeholder participatory processes lead to sustainability learning promoting resilience and adaptation. Paper 2 presents an approach to link an ensemble of global climate model outputs with a hydrological model to quantify climate change impacts in the hydrology of a basin, providing a range of uncertainty in the results. Precipitation projections for the current century from different climate models and IPCC scenarios are used to obtain recharge estimates as inputs to a groundwater model. Quantifying changes in the basin's water budget due to changes in recharge, evapotranspiration (ET) rates are assumed to depend only on groundwater levels. Picking on such assumption, Paper 3 explores the effects of a changing climate on ET. Using experimental eddy covariance data from three riparian sites, it analyzes seasonal controls on ET. An approach to quantify evapotranspiration rates and growing season length under warmer climates is proposed. Results indicate that although atmospheric demand will be greater, increasing pan and reference crop evaporation, ET rates at the studied field sites will remain unchanged due to stomatal regulation. However, the length of the growing season will increase, mainly with an earlier leaf-out and at a lesser level by a delayed growing season end. These findings - implying decreased aquifer recharge, increased riparian water use and a lesser water balance - are very relevant for water management in semi-arid regions. Paper 4, in which I am second author, explores the theory relating changes in area-average and pan evaporation. Using the same experimental data as Paper 3, it corroborates a previous theoretical relationship and discusses the validity of Bouchet's hypothesis.

Book excerpt: Climate change poses a serious threat to Lake Erie, as global climate models (GCMs) project increases in the amount and intensity of rainfall in surrounding watersheds which may increase flow and nutrient loading into the lake. Quantifying these potential changes is necessary to develop management recommendations to preserve Lake Erie ecosystem services in the future. This study utilized the process-based SWAT hydrologic model and an ensemble of global climate models to study the potential effects IPCC RCP4.5 (mid-range) and RCP8.5 (high) emissions scenarios on the Maumee River discharge and nutrient loading rates through the 21st century. Generally, the impacts of climate change on flow, sediments and nutrients discharged from the Maumee River become more pronounced moving from the near- (2010-2039) to the mid- (2040-2069) and far-century (2070-2099). Increased winter temperatures are expected to result in fewer snowmelt events and greater infiltration, greatly reducing winter surface runoff, sediment, and phosphorus loading. Spring time (March-June) flow, which is highly correlated with Lake Erie harmful algal blooms (HABs), was projected to increase 4.4% (0.2%) in the near-century and 6.1% (12.1%) by the late-century under RCP4.5 (RCP8.5) due to increases in precipitation and reduction in plant stomatal conductance. These increases in flow are expected to result in increased spring sediment loading by 2.6 (0.4%) in the near-century and 8.0% (36.0%) by the late-century under RCP4.5 (RCP8.5). Fall (September-November) discharge was greatly impacted by increased precipitation and projected early harvests, which resulted in prolonged periods of bare fields and susceptibility to erosion. Fall sediment increased 23.3% (17.1%) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) increased 17.9% (12.9%) in the near-century, continuing into the far-future, where sediment increased 40.7% (72.2%) and SRP increased 25.7 (43.1%) under RCP4.5 (RCP8.5). Because of increased plant growth and phosphorus uptake driven by elevated carbon dioxide levels, as well as reduced winter surface runoff, annual SRP decreased by 0.7% (3.7%) in the near-century and 11.2% (7.2%) by the far-century, and annual total phosphorus (TP) decreased by 4.0% (6.5%) in the near-century and 14.1% (6.0%) by the far-century under RCP4.5 (RCP8.5). These findings demonstrate that despite projected increases in flows and sediment yields, increased plant growth stimulated by elevated carbon dioxide levels may potentially cause reductions in Maumee River phosphorus loading during the 21st century.
