Book excerpt: Running economy (RE) is the amount of oxygen utilized (ml.kg−1min−1) when running a fixed speed, and it has been demonstrated to be an important factor determining race performance in distance runners. There is evidence that running economy and/or maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) improves over the course of a training season in distance runners. However, little research has examined RE in high-level team sports that require athletes to cover large distances over the course of a competition. PURPOSE: To examine RE and VO2max values across a season in female NCAA Division I soccer athletes. METHODS: Fourteen female soccer players from a Pacific Athletic Conference team completed pre-season and post-season aerobic testing on a motorized treadmill; 14 weeks separated the testing sessions. Players performed a combined RE/VO2max test that consisted of a 3-minute warm-up at 6mph, two continuous 6-minute bouts at 7 mph and 8 mph, during which RE was assessed, and a final, continuous segment that maintained the treadmill velocity at 8 mph and increased treadmill incline by 2% the next minute and 1% each successive minute until volitional exhaustion was reached. Minute-average data was collected from exhaled air using a ParvoMedics TrueMax 2400 metabolic cart. RE was defined as the average of the oxygen uptake for the last three minutes of the 7 and 8 mph bouts. VO2peak was determined with the highest one-minute average oxygen uptake value for each participant. RESULTS: Paired t-tests showed no significant differences between any of the RE or VO2peak values from the pre-season and post-season test sessions. The mean subject height was 169.14 ± 3.37 cm. The mean body mass pre- and post-test was 63.83 ± 6.88 kg and 63.70 ± 6.60 kg, respectively. There was no difference between pre- and post-testing for RE at 7 mph or 8 mph, p > 0.05, (36.32 ± 1.40 ml.kg−1min−1 vs. 35.92 ± 1.23 ml.kg−1min−1 and 41.33 ± 1.27 ml.kg−1min−1 vs. 41.17 ± 1.75 ml.kg−1min−1). There was also no significant change in VO2peak, p > 0.05, (46.19 ± 3.87 vs. 46.16 ± 4.54 ml.kg−1min−1). CONCLUSIONS: High-level soccer training and competition does not appear to elicit measurable changes in RE or VO2peak over the course of a season.

Book excerpt: Women’s soccer athletes are exposed to 2.7-6.9 impacts per competitive game, leading to a large number of impacts over the course of one’s career. The long-term effects of these repetitive impacts have been debated with some studies reporting neuropsychological and structural injury and others reporting no changes. In order to understand these impacts, head acceleration has been used to quantify impacts on the field in sports such as football and ice hockey. The purpose of this study is to quantify and compare head accelerations during women’s soccer by player position, impact type, and playing scenario, games and practices. Twenty-four NCAA Division-I women’s soccer players were equipped with Smart Impact Monitors (SIMs), which were worn during all practices and games. The SIMs were secured to the head and positioned just below the inion using a custom headband. Real-time accelerations were transmitted wirelessly to a computer on the sidelines. Visual, on-field monitoring of games and practices allowed for the classification (type) of impact. Results indicate significant differences in peak linear accelerations exist between player position, type of impact, and playing environment. Information gathered from this investigation is important to identify athletes at risk of injury due to the various factors associated with head impacts.

Furthermore, this study also aimed to describe the time course of recovery of [maximal power output] following two collegiate soccer matches in one weekend. The current investigation involved two experimental periods. The first took place throughout the 2010 Big XII soccer season. Nineteen Division I female collegiate soccer players (19.9 ± 1.2 yrs, 165.1 ± 6.6 cm, 61.0 ± 6.8 kg) from the same collegiate soccer team completed regular inertial load testing and perceptual fatigue questionnaires throughout this study period. These athletes' training was not altered in any way by the investigators throughout the 2010 season. During the second experimental period, two off-season matches were played in one weekend during the 2011 off-season. Training was prescribed by coaches, with the aim of simulating an in-season training week. [Maximal power output] and perceptual fatigue responses were monitored every day throughout the second study period. All training and matches throughout the study were monitored via the session RPE method. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes two studies based on data collected during a 3-month, season-long enjoyment-focused mental skills training (MST) intervention with a team of Division I female soccer players. Study 1 evaluates the effectiveness of the season-long intervention utilizing quantitative data to compare treatment and control groups. Study 2 describes how and why the intervention was implemented, utilizing quantitative and qualitative data from the treatment group to identify effect "process" variables. Repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance results from Study 1 revealed that the MST intervention significantly increased sport enjoyment, key mental training skills, and athletic performance both, in practice and competition, compared to the control group. Results from Study 2 demonstrated through case study, cross-case analyses and individual engagement scores how a MST program can enhance the quantity and quality of sport sources of enjoyment (SOE), the primary SOE present in collegiate soccer, autonomy-supportive SOE, the role of athletic engagement and how different components become more prominent at different points of the intervention, and sport enjoyment's impact on athletic performance. The discussion focuses on the role of the working implementation model in intervention effectiveness.
