Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a richer understanding of the effect of community-based group music therapy on quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities through the insights of four sub-groups in two community-based group music therapy choirs: choir members (people with developmental disabilities), parents/caregivers, choir leaders (music therapists) and the program supervisor. The study provided valuable feedback concerning how satisfied persons with developmental disabilities were with the group music therapy services that they had received, what benefits the choir members had derived from participating in the community-based group music therapy choirs, and how the benefits were related to the choir members' quality of life. Data were collected in group and individual interviews that were conducted with 29 individuals consisting of 18 choir members, 8 parents/caregivers, 2 choir leaders and 1 program supervisor. Key statements of each subgroup were summarized according to the transcript texts. Global themes shared by part or all of the subgroups were identified by comparing and contrasting subgroups' key statements. The result of this study showed that there is a significant positive effect of community-based group music therapy on the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities in the five categories of "emotional well-being," "social inclusion," "interpersonal relations," "self-determination," "personal development" and eleven subcategories of "safety," "self-concept," "happiness," "community integration/participation," "lifestyle," "friendships," "family relationships," "personal control," "choices," "education," and "skills." Thirty global themes of the effect of community-based group music therapy on quality of life for people with developmental disabilities shared by part or all of the subgroups were identified and described.

Individuals who have Intellectual Disabilities all have diverse strengths, weaknesses, needs, and personalities. Within a group with a variety of individuals it is clear, however, that there are several marked characteristics and needs, which may be common to many individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. Two difficult commonly faced are in the area of vocalization skills and gross motor skills (Peters 84). Developing vocalization skills can assist individuals with Intellectual Disabilities in being able to communicate within their community more clearly. Vocalization aids in the development of functional communication skills. It also helps individuals with Intellectual Disabilities communicate their specific needs, wants, and wants, and discomforts within the community. Improving gross motor skills would help individuals to increase their personal independence, not only at the day care center but also in the community. In general, both vocalization and gross motors skill development helps to improve the self-help skills of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, which in-turn increases quality of life. Young adults with disabilities attend daily art and music therapy centered classes aimed at helping to improve daily functioning and increase community integration. A unique and diverse group of students with disabilities attend day programs and communicate by using both verbal and nonverbal communication. Decreased vocalization can make it difficult for some students to clearly express their needs and wants. Limited motor skill decreases participation at a day program, and in home and community activities. Music therapy interventions will assist and encourage individuals with disabilities to increase vocalization and make movements to music, which in turn will improve their quality of life.

Book excerpt: Youth with intellectual disabilities have been found to experience poor postschool outcomes compared to youth with other disabilities and youth in the general population (Newman, Wagner, Cameto, & Knokey, 2009). To improve postschool outcomes, several best practices are recommended by researchers and professionals in the field of transition either specifically for youth with intellectual disabilities or all youth with disabilities. A handful of studies have examined the extent to which best practices are implemented and some nonexperimental studies have found that best practices are predictive of postschool outcomes. However, no study has yet examined whether the combination of several best practices is predictive of outcomes in multiple domains for youth with intellectual disabilities or provided a comprehensive examination of whether individual, family, and school characteristics make a difference in whether youth with intellectual disabilities experience best practices. The present study analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 to examine the extent of use of best practices and factors that affect best practice use, and to identify whether best practices are predictive of postschool outcomes after controlling for other factors for youth with intellectual disabilities. In descriptive and comparative analyses, variation was found in the proportion of youth who had received each of the best practices with almost all youth reported to have received transition planning and less than half of youth reported to have experienced interagency involvement, yet there was no discernible pattern in the characteristics of youth that was associated with an increased likelihood of receiving each best practice. In predictive logistic regression analyses, the combination of five best practices was found to significantly predict the outcomes of employment, postsecondary education, and enjoyment of life after controlling for youth, family, and school characteristics. In these analyses, parent expectations for employment and postsecondary education were some of the strongest predictors of postschool success. Although this study had several limitations, these findings suggest that best practices may be predictive of postschool success and highlight the importance of having high expectations for all youth. These findings must be replicated in future longitudinal research studies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this critical qualitative study was to understand how transition to adulthood for young people with developmental disabilities (DD) is constituted as a 'problem' in policies and practices across sectors in Ontario and the implications for these young people and their parents. This transition to adulthood has been identified as a policy problem in three provincial government sectors in Ontario, Canada-rehabilitation, education, and developmental services. The problem is predominantly framed as a service transition issue, particularly when young people 'age out' of pediatric health services by age 19 and public education by age 21, and seek adult-oriented programs and services. Transition policies have been developed in each sector, shaped by both explicit and implicit understandings of key concepts, such as disability and adulthood. These understandings function to constitute transition as a particular kind of problem, and play a key role in what is considered and proposed to address it, but also what is not considered or potentially neglected or even ignored. What is and is not considered has implications for the health and daily lives of young disabled people and their families. Guided by a problem-questioning approach to policy analysis proposed by Carol Bacchi, I used a multimethod design, including analysis of three policy documents and in-depth interviews with 13 parents, to examine how transition to adulthood is constituted as a problem. My analysis revealed that normative assumptions about ways of being, becoming, and acting as an adult shaped an implied problem of disabled children and their inadequate progression to socially valued adult roles and activities. Policies shaped by these assumptions had both positive (e.g., feelings of self-worth for achieving or approximating socially valued roles and activities) and unintended negative effects (e.g., social exclusion, stress or anxiety when adult roles were not achieved) on young disabled people and their parents. These findings highlight opportunities for rethinking the policy problem in ways that can mitigate unintended harmful consequences on young people with DD and their families and for improving their health and daily life circumstances through healthy public policy and cross-sector coordination.
