Book excerpt: This study examines four aspects of survivors of ABI's experience: 1) quality of life (QOL) before and after the injury, 2) mental health before and after the injury, 3) the effectiveness of services accessed, and 4) the barriers to accessing the services. The researchers developed a questionnaire and interviewed 10 clients from Crossroads to Brain Injury Recovery, Inc. The following findings were obtained from the study: 1) there was a significant decrease in QOL satisfaction rating post-injury. 2) More participants had mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder after the injury. The majority of the individuals who sought counseling from a mental health professional found it helpful. 3) Experiences with the emergency room/hospital and community service board (CSB) were variable; however, the researcher is cautious to draw any conclusions from these responses because of the small sample size. Overall, participants were satisfied with the service Crossroads to Brain Injury Recovery, Inc. 4) Participants perceived financial resources, transportation, and knowledge of available services as barriers to access services. Based on these findings, it appears that the survivors of brain injury are not accessing available services despite their decreased post-injury QOL rating. In addition, knowledge of available services is one barrier that can be addressed through increased education and outreach.
