Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1. Overview of Numerical Quadrature The numerical evaluation of integrals is one of the oldest problems in mathematics. One can trace its roots back at least to Archimedes. The task is to compute the value of the definite integral of a given function. This is the area under a curve in one dimension or a volume in several dimensions. In addition to being a problem of great practi cal interest it has also lead to the development of mathematics of much beauty and insight. Many portions of approximation theory are directly applicable to integration and results from areas as diverse as orthogo nal polynomials, Fourier series and number theory have had important implications for the evaluation of integrals. We denote the problem addressed here as numerical integration or numerical quadrature. Over the years analysts and engineers have contributed to a growing body of theorems, algorithms and lately, programs, for the solution of this specific problem. Much effort has been devoted to techniques for the analytic evalua tion of integrals. However, most routine integrals in practical scien tific work are incapable of being evaluated in closed form. Even if an expression can be derived for the value of an integral, often this reveals itself only after inordinate amounts of error prone algebraic manipulation. Recently some computer procedures have been developed which can perform analytic integration when it is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with various aspects of scientific numerical computing. No at tempt was made to be complete or encyclopedic. The successful solution of a numerical problem has many facets and consequently involves different fields of computer science. Computer numerics- as opposed to computer algebra- is thus based on applied mathematics, numerical analysis and numerical computation as well as on certain areas of computer science such as computer architecture and operating systems. Applied Mathemalies I I I Numerical Analysis Analysis, Algebra I I Numerical Computation Symbolic Computation I Operating Systems Computer Hardware Each chapter begins with sample situations taken from specific fields of appli cation. Abstract and general formulations of mathematical problems are then presented. Following this abstract level, a general discussion about principles and methods for the numerical solution of mathematical problems is presented. Relevant algorithms are developed and their efficiency and the accuracy of their results is assessed. It is then explained as to how they can be obtained in the form of numerical software. The reader is presented with various ways of applying the general methods and principles to particular classes of problems and approaches to extracting practically useful solutions with appropriately chosen numerical software are developed. Potential difficulties and obstacles are examined, and ways of avoiding them are discussed. The volume and diversity of all the available numerical software is tremendous.

Book excerpt: In recent years much attention has been given to the development of auto matic systems of planning, design and control in various branches of the national economy. Quality of decisions is an issue which has come to the forefront, increasing the significance of optimization algorithms in math ematical software packages for al,ltomatic systems of various levels and pur poses. Methods for minimizing functions with discontinuous gradients are gaining in importance and the ~xperts in the computational methods of mathematical programming tend to agree that progress in the development of algorithms for minimizing nonsmooth functions is the key to the con struction of efficient techniques for solving large scale problems. This monograph summarizes to a certain extent fifteen years of the author's work on developing generalized gradient methods for nonsmooth minimization. This work started in the department of economic cybernetics of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences under the supervision of V.S. Mikhalevich, a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, in connection with the need for solutions to important, practical problems of optimal planning and design. In Chap. I we describe basic classes of nonsmooth functions that are dif ferentiable almost everywhere, and analyze various ways of defining generalized gradient sets. In Chap. 2 we study in detail various versions of the su bgradient method, show their relation to the methods of Fejer-type approximations and briefly present the fundamentals of e-subgradient methods.

Numerical integration is the study of how the numerical value of an integral can be found. This book contains six chapters and begins with a discussion of the basic principles and limitations of numerical integration. The succeeding chapters present the approximate integration rules and formulas over finite and infinite intervals. These topics are followed by a review of error analysis and estimation, as well as the application of functional analysis to numerical integration. A chapter describes the approximate integration in two or more dimensions. The final chapter looks into the goals and processes of automatic integration, with particular attention to the application of Tschebyscheff polynomials. This book will be of great value to theoreticians and computer programmers.

Book excerpt: a c 9 h In presenting this monograph, I would like to indicate both its orientation as well as my personal reasons for being interested in discrete iterations (that is, iterations on a generally very large, jinite set). While working in numerical analysis I have been interested in two main aspects: - the algorithmic aspect: an iterative algorithm is a mathematical entity which behaves in a dynamic fashion. Even if it is started far from a solution, it will often tend to get closer and closer. - the mathematical aspect: this consists of a coherent and rigorous analy sis of convergence, with the aid of mathematical tools (these tools are mainly the use of norms for convergence proofs, the use of matrix algebra and so on). One may for example refer to the algorithmic and mathematical aspects of Newton's method in JRn as well as to the QR algorithm for eigenvalues of matrices. These two algorithms seem to me to be the most fascinating algorithms in numerical analysis, since both show a remarkable practical efficiency even though there exist relatively few global convergence results for them.

Book excerpt: "So far as I remember, I have never seen an Author's Pre face which had any purpose but one - to furnish reasons for the publication of the Book. " (Mark Twain) "Gauss' dictum, "when a building is completed no one should be able to see any trace of the scaffolding," is often used by mathematicians as an excuse for neglecting the motivation behind their own work and the history of their field. For tunately, the opposite sentiment is gaining strength, and numerous asides in this Essay show to which side go my sympathies. " (B. B. Mandelbrot, 1982) 'This gives us a good occasion to work out most of the book until the next year. " (the Authors in a letter, dated c. kt. 29, 1980, to Springer Verlag) There are two volumes, one on non-stiff equations, now finished, the second on stiff equations, in preparation. The first volume has three chapters, one on classical mathematical theory, one on Runge Kutta and extrapolation methods, and one on multistep methods. There is an Appendix containing some Fortran codes which we have written for our numerical examples. Each chapter is divided into sections. Numbers of formulas, theorems, tables and figures are consecutive in each section and indi cate, in addition, the section number, but not the chapter number. Cross references to other chapters are rare and are stated explicitly. The end of a proof is denoted by "QED" (quod erat demonstrandum).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains refereed papers and extended abstracts of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled 'Numerical Integration: Recent Developments, Software and Applications', held at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, August 11-15, 1986. The Workshop was attended by thirty-six scientists from eleven NATO countries. Thirteen invited lectures and twenty-two contributed lectures were presented, of which twenty-five appear in full in this volume, together with extended abstracts of the remaining ten. It is more than ten years since the last workshop of this nature was held, in Los Alamos in 1975. Many developments have occurred in quadrature in the intervening years, and it seemed an opportune time to bring together again researchers in this area. The development of QUADPACK by Piessens, de Doncker, Uberhuber and Kahaner has changed the focus of research in the area of one dimensional quadrature from the construction of new rules to an emphasis on reliable robust software. There has been a dramatic growth in interest in the testing and evaluation of software, stimulated by the work of Lyness and Kaganove, Einarsson, and Piessens. The earlier research of Patterson into Kronrod extensions of Gauss rules, followed by the work of Monegato, and Piessens and Branders, has greatly increased interest in Gauss-based formulas for one-dimensional integration.
