Book excerpt: In mobile ad-hoc networks, mobile nodes can communicate with each other without any central infrastructure. Its employment is favored in many environments. Thus many efforts are put on ad-hoc networks at both MAC and routing layers and QoS is the issue that are considering for both MAC and routing layer for ad hoc network. IEEE 802.11 is discussed and routing protocols widely used in the ad hoc network and analyzed. The QoS of Proactive and Reactive routing protocols are analyzed and compared using OPNET simulator. During the simulation with OPNET, there are different scenarios are taken like data rate, end to end delay, routing load and packet dropped and all the scenario is implemented in Http light and Http heavy load. The result show that sometimes proactive is better than reactive routing protocols and it continuously sends the data packets along route to gateway until the link is broken. It is also observed that when data packet is delay increase at end to end it is delay for all the packets and it is also observed that end to end delay decreases for very short time when the advertisement interval is increase. It is observed that low routing load for reactive DSR, AODV routing protocols comparing to proactive OLSR and it is also observed that when number of nodes increase for proactive routing protocols routing load increases. Because of proactive routing protocols maintains their routing table information in each node. We can observe from the simulation results and analysis that when we add the QoS to the routing protocols will optimize the performance of the traffic it can be seen that adding QoS to routing protocols is meaningful to optimize the performance of traffic.

The models presented in this dissertation support an arbitrary backoffstrategy. We found that the most important parameter affecting the performance ofbinary exponential backoff is the initial backoff window size. Our experimental resultsshow that the probability of collision can be reduced when the initial backoff windowsize equals the number of terminals. Thus, the throughput of the system increasesand, at the same time, the delay to transmit the frame is reduced. In our second contribution, we present a new analytical model of a MediumAccess Control (MAC) layer for wireless ad hoc networks that takes into accountframe retry limits for a four-way handshaking mechanism. This model offers flexibility to address some design issues such as the effects of traffic parameters as well aspossible improvements for wireless ad hoc networks. It effectively captures importantnetwork performance characteristics such as throughput, channel utilization, delay, and average energy. Under this analytical framework, we evaluate the effect of theRequest-to-Send (RTS) state on unsuccessful transmission probability and its effect onperformance particularly when the hidden terminal problem is dominant, the traffic isheavy, or the data frame length is very large. By using our proposed model, we showthat the probability of collision can be reduced when using a Request-to-Send/Clear-to-Send (RTS/CTS) mechanism. Thus, the throughput increases and, at the sametime, the delay and the average energy to transmit the frame decrease. In our third contribution, we present a new analytical model of a MAC layer forwireless ad hoc networks that takes into account channel bit errors and frame retrylimits for a two-way handshaking mechanism. This model offers flexibility to addressdesign issues such as the effects of traffic parameters and possible improvements forwireless ad hoc networks. We illustrate that an important parameter affecting theperformance of binary exponential backoff is the initial backoff window size. We showthat for a low bit error rate (BER) the throughput increases and, at the same time, the delay and the average energy to transmit the frame decrease. Results show alsothat the negative acknowledgment-based (NAK-based) model proves more useful fora high BER. In our fourth contribution, we present a new analytical model of a MAC layerfor wireless ad hoc networks that takes into account Quality of Service (QoS) ofthe MAC layer for a two-way handshaking mechanism. The model includes a highpriority traffic class (class 1) and a low priority traffic class (class 2). Extension ofthe model to more QoS levels is easily accomplished. We illustrate an importantparameter affecting the performance of an Arbitration InterFrame Space (AIFS) andsmall backoff window size limits. They cause the frame to start contending the channelearlier and to complete the backoff sooner. As a result, the probability of sending theframe increases. Under this analytical framework, we evaluate the effect of QoS onsuccessful transmission probability and its effect on performance, particularly whenhigh priority traffic is dominant.

TCP is the standard protocol of transport layer which behaves in different flavors. Among such variants NewReno and HSTCP are the most commonly used. However the performance of TCP NewReno and HSTCP are very much sensitive to immediate changes in the traffic load. For achieving the QoS in mobile adhoc networks the problems related with congestion issues has to be addressed. The proposed work identifies certain number of issues during the improvement of QoS in mobile adhoc networks. Hence, the proposed algorithms MHSTCP and SwTCP are designed and developed. MHSTCP and SwTCP give attention towards few parameters such as Bandwidth utilization, Data rate, Delay, and energy. The proposed algorithms are simulated in Network Simulator-2 by varying impairments and results are verified. Based on the simulation results, the research outcome shows that the proposed algorithms outperform the existing TCP congestion control variants in enhancing the QoS parameters in Mobile adhoc networks.

The primary quality of service (QoS) issues such as required bandwidth, message delay, traffic type and hop count per route improves the efficiency of streaming services over ad-hoc network. Streaming services support voice, data and video traffic by assessing and adjusting for various levels of QoS. The performance analysis is performed on functional prototype of OptiQ in mobile / wireless ad-hoc network with emphasis on service satisfaction for multiple group conference sessions. The performance of OptiQ scheme is well compared with QoS-aware versions of AODV and TORA, well-known ad-hoc routing and limited QoS protocols. Using the SPRUCE bandwidth traffic gathering tool, with a set of C++ modules an extensive set of performance experiments were conducted for these protocols with OptiQ on a wide variety of mobility patterns and reservation strategies. As this kind of network can be easily implemented without requiring fixed infrastructures, it is considered as one of the most important solutions for building distributed wireless systems. Obviously, the physical channel in wireless ad-hoc network significantly distinguishes itself from the other existing networks. For example, fluctuations caused by unstable wireless channel are more severe. From an ordinaryperspective, these characteristics are treated as disadvantages, and have to be eliminated in network design.Burgeoning technology called physical layer security represents a completely subversive attitude to these issues. Unique physical channel is exploited to provide additional security guarantee. However, new problems are also introduced into the system. Transmission rate of links with physical layer security is largely restricted due to the overhead used for secure mechanism. Network performance (e.g., throughput and delay) is accordingly affected. Thus, QoS turns out to be a major concern innetworks with physical layer security. In this research, the focus is on the problem of how to guarantee QoS and physicallayer security simultaneously in wireless ad-hoc networks. Since traditional solutions for QoS are always implemented in upper layers of the network structure, they can hardly provide full support to the new secure physical layer. Furthermore, as services without secure requirement still exist in the network, the coexistence of secure and regular physical layer has to be taken into consideration. These issues have set new demands of corresponding MAC layer scheduling protocols. Therefore, we summarizethe general characteristics of physical layer security technology, based on which SecDCF, a MAC layer scheduling framework is presented. An interface is also designed to enable the integration of different scheduling policies. Furthermore, diversifiedrequirements from different scenarios are studied, and scheduling policies are then derived to be applied with SecDCF.Corresponding numerical analysis and simulations are also carried out to evaluate our research. As a conclusion, it is illustrated in this dissertation that with elaborately designed MAC layer scheduling schemes, it is possible to exploit the rich physical layercharacteristics for achieving both security and QoS in wireless ad-hoc networks.
